Embracing diversity.

It is imperative that nursing professionals are proactive, as well as creative, when addressing overall nursing workforce planning and the nursing shortage. The profession must take a comprehensive look at what is currently available to manage an increasingly complex health care system that manages care for more acutely ill and chronically ill/impaired patients. Being proactive, open-minded, and flexible may help nurses make strides in increased staffing of all of our health care agencies. Embracing a more diverse workforce is one powerful mechanism toward that goal.

Promoting collaborative practice with culturally diverse populations.

Practicing nurses in multiple health care settings must be prepared to manage a diverse, multicultural patient population and work collaboratively with co-workers representing different cultural backgrounds. To prepare professional nurses to practice effectively with our increasingly diverse population, frontline managers and nursing service administrators must act jointly to increase their knowledge of cultural diversity, share that knowledge, and combine forces to promote cultural awareness and sensitivity in practice settings.
