[Quantitative determination of alpha-foetoprotein in perinatal medicine. Second communication: Verification of AFP concentration in umbilical cord blood of newborns as an objective parameter for assessment of gestational age (author's transl)].

AFP concentrations were recorded from umbilical cord serum of 482 newborns, with 453 of them weighing more than 2.500 gram and 29 less than 2,501 gram. The AFP values thus found were correlated with the established clinical parameters of gestation, such as birth weight, length, circumference of head, biparietal skull diameter, circumference of chest, and gestationsal age by case history. - The closest correlation between any two of the above selected clinical parameters was found to exist between AFP concentration and gestational age by case history, whereas correlations were least close between AFP and biparietal diameter. Measurement of AFP in umbilical cord blood is considered to be merely a complementary criterion for assessment of gestational age by clinical parameter, because of too large scatter of individual data.

[Quantitative determination of the alpha-feto-protein in the practice of perinatal medicine. 1st communication: the physiology of the alpha-feto-protein and its quantitative proof by means of electrophoresis in antibody containing gel according to Laurell (author's transl)].

The alpha-feto-protein (AFP) ist described on the basis of the available literature; its diagnostic use up to the present is outlined, and an immunological method of its quantitative determination is presented. The results obtained by quantitating the level of AFP in the cord serum of 50 mature newborns (-x = 9,9 mg/100 ml) are in good agreement with other reports.

[Opinion to the vibrodilatation of the cervix in induced abortions - report of 2 years of experiences with the Soviet vibrodilatator WG-I].

The article discusses the techniques, the indications, the advantages and disadvantages of vibrodilatation on the basis of 2855 interruptiones of pregnancy up to the 12th months. No perforation, cervical injury or intraoperative bleeding due to the use of a WG-I vibrodilator was established in the authors' own patients. The average loss of blood was 164 ml and the periods of dilatation ranged from 6 to 44 seconds, with a failure rate of 5 per cent. The authors recommend that in cases of interruption of pregnancy vibrodilatation, involving very few complications, should be attempted as a rule before Hegar's classical dilatation is applied.
