Prevalence of mandibular dysfunction in 10-18 year old Israeli schoolchildren.

The prevalence of mandibular dysfunction in a sample of 369 Israeli schoolchildren was found to be 56.4%, indicating that one or more of the cardinal symptoms were present. It increased with age from about 51% in the 10-13 year old group to 67.8% in the 16-18 year olds. The most common cardinal sign of dysfunction was joint sounds (35.8%), which increased with age from 28% in the youngest group to 44.3% in the oldest group. The second most common sign was joint sensitivity to palpation (30.4%), which showed a slight increase in the oldest group. Sensitivity of the superficial muscles was recorded third, with 20%. Joint pain and restriction of mandibular movement appeared infrequently. Two of the more common cardinal symptoms, namely joint sounds and muscle sensitivity, were statistically related to several possible aetiological factors and to age and sex. Analysis of association showed that the probability of muscle sensitivity increased in the presence of malocclusion and/or joint sensitivity to palpation. It also showed that age, occlusal wear, locking of the jaw and joint sensitivity to palpation increased the probability of joint sounds.

Immunologic studies in phenylketonuria.

Significantly reduced immunoglobulins were found in 22 patients with phenylketonuria. Tests of cellular immune function which included delayed skin hypersensitivity, T rosettes and PHA transformation were normal. Escherichia coli antibodies and the booster response to tetanus toxoid were also normal.

Risk factors in ulcerative colitis.

In 504 Jewish patients with ulcerative colitis the following risk factors were evaluated: sex, age at onset of disease, community group, extent of disease, and duration of disease. The disease was more severe in females. Severe attacks, weight loss, iron deficiency, liver disease and arthritis were significantly more frequent in females than in mles. Mortality was higher in patients who contracted the disease above age 50. The disease appeared to be more severe in patiets of Ashkenazi origin as compared to Orientals. The difference failed to reach statistical signifcance except for mortality. We confirmed the well-known adverse effect of extensive colonic involvement. Severe attacks, a severe course of the disease and extensive colonic involvement are more frequent with increasing duration of the disease.

Ulcerative colitis in the Jewish population of Tel-Aviv Yafo. III. Clinical course.

The clinical course of ulcerative colitis has been studied and analyzed in 504 Jewish patients in the Tel Aviv area. The length of follow-up was 1 to 46 years, with a mean of 7.8 years. The data are compared with other published series of the disease in different geographical areas. Differences in the incidence of serveral complications are noted. The trend in recent years toward a lesser mortality associated with the disease is discussed.

Growth during and 2 years after stopping GH treatment in prepubertal children with idiopathic short stature.

Forty-six prepubertal children with idiopathic short stature (ISS), 39 boys and 7 girls, with a mean age of 7.4 +/- 1.8 (SD) years, and mean bone age of 4.5 +/- 1.5 years were treated by human growth hormone (GH) 0.1 U/kg/day s.c. for 30.5 +/- 16.2 months (M +/- SD) (2-5 years range) and were followed for 1-2 years after stopping GH. The mean net gain in height at the end of treatment was 1.03 +/- 0.6 SDS and the bone age SDS was accelerated by 0.95 +/- 1.05. Despite a transitory "catch-down" in growth velocity after stopping GH administration, there was a mean height gain at the end of 2 years follow-up of 0.87 SDS. Children who started treatment before age 6.5 benefited more than older ones. In conclusion, the gain in height observed in children with ISS by GH treatment was maintained during 2 years of follow-up after interruption of treatment. Even if this benefit is transitory and not permanent, it may help short children to achieve self-confidence and raise their physical performance at the critical period of school entry.

Serum leptin in obese patients with Laron syndrome before and during IGF-I treatment.

Fifteen patients with primary GH resistance (Laron syndrome, LS) were studied before and during 6 months of daily replacement treatment with IGF-I. The main findings were that patients with LS and normal or high serum GH binding protein (GHBP) were less obese than those with a negative GHBP, and that serum leptin levels varied with body mass as in other types of obesity.
