Developing a workable infection control policy for the dental laboratory.

An enforced infection control policy in a laboratory will reduce occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other infectious diseases and protect the dental laboratory personnel from exposure to infective disease. An outline of a workable laboratory infection control policy based on "Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens" requirements is presented.

A procedure for restoring proximal contact surfaces of cast gold restorations with solder.

Faulty contacts on restorations can be very damaging to the patient's dentition. Occasionally they are not corrected on a new restoration because of the length of time required for the procedure. The method described here is fast, simple, and protects the occlusal surfaces and margins of the restorations from damage while adding to the contacts with solder.

Soldering procedure for repairing a full cast gold restoration.

Repairing a small hole in a cast gold restoration can often be frustrating. The method described here using platinum fold to obliterate the hole to give the solder a medium to flow across is superior to most other methods of repairing crowns and is almost foolproof. This method requires the use of the die on which the crown wa made and the use of soldering investment.

Guidelines for developing a dental laboratory infection-control protocol.

Guidelines for developing a dental laboratory infection-control protocol are discussed. A detailed outline of infection-control protocol regarding universal precautions, personal protective equipment, hepatitis B vaccination, environmental and surface cleaning and disinfection, and personnel training is presented.
