Eight patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia of Burkitt's type (ALL-L3) and two patients with Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) were subjected for cytogenetic studies. Translocation (8;14)(q24;q32) was present in nine (90%) patients; seven patients of ALL-L3 and two of BL. One ALL-L3 patient revealed t(14;18)(q32;q21) in 100 per cent metaphases. Additional clonal chromosomal anomalies present in these patients were deletion (6q) (40%) and trisomy 21(20%). The occurrence of t(8;14)(q24;q32) in ALL-L3 and BL patients in our series supports the association of t(8;14) with ALL-L3 and Burkitt's lymphoma.
Chromosomal analysis was performed on the tumor tissue in a case of ocular rhabdomyosarcoma. Cytogenetic analysis revealed multiple clonal abnormalities. Derivative(5)t(1;5)(q21;q35) and t(2;11) (q21;q23) were present in all the metaphases analyzed (100%). Translocation(1;19)(q21;q13) was observed in 61% of the metaphases. Other clonal abnormalities present included +i(6p)(85%),i(17q)(38%),18q+(57%), 4p+ (38%), loss of the Y chromosome (33%), and presence of double minutes (12.8%).

An 11-year-old boy with acute myeloblastic leukaemia in first remission received an allogeneic mismatched bone-marrow transplant (BMT) from his father in 1979; subsequent HLA typing showed that his haemopoietic system had been repopulated by the donor cells. In 1986 hypereosinophilic syndrome, secondary to a T-cell lymphocytic lymphoma, developed in the father, then aged 45 years. A full haematological remission was obtained by means of standard acute lymphoblastic leukaemia treatment. He then received melphalan, total body irradiation, and a BMT from his son. Graft-versus-host disease was transient in both patients, and father and son remain well and disease-free 20 months and 10 years, respectively, after BMT.
The clinical manifestations of angio-immunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AILD) suggest that there is an abnormality in the immune system. Most patients with AILD die from opportunistic infections associated with lymphocyte depletion. As chemotherapy further increases the already high susceptibility of infections, the therapeutic management of AILD is difficult. The achievement of complete remission (CR) by the patient described here using a danazol-based regimen raises the hope that treatment of this disease with a noncytotoxic drug may be possible. The rationale behind and advantages of using danazol are discussed.
Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) often occurs secondary to drug therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, idiopathic PRCA in RA is very rare. Though different immunosuppressive therapies have been tried in the past with variable responses, there has been no case report in adults of favourable response to corticosteroids alone. We report a rare case of PRCA in RA, which responded to steroid therapy. Subsequently, the patient relapsed twice, during the first trimester of consecutive pregnancies. The association of PRCA with RA and pregnancy is discussed.

Bone marrow involvement was seen in 11 percent of patients with Hodgkin's Disease which was determined from pre-treatment biopsy specimens using established histopathologic criteria. Analysis of 32 evaluable patients with marrow involvement showed male preponderance with a peak in fourth decade of life. Twenty four cases (75%) had B-symptoms and 15 (46%) presented within six months of onset of symptoms. On categorizing for clinical staging, 21 (65%) belonged to stage III and IV. Hepatomegaly (greater than or equal to 2 cms) was present in seven cases (21%) and splenomegaly in 13 cases (40%). Mixed cellularity and lymphocytic depletion histopathologic subtypes showed the highest frequency of involvement (21 cases; 65%). Out of 28 cases ESR was raised in 27 cases (96%). Eighteen cases (56%) showed elevated serum alkaline phosphatase levels. Serum copper levels were determined in 14 cases, out of which 12 (85%) showed elevated levels. These parameters along with anemia (hemoglobin of 12 g/dl or less) in 26 cases (81%), correlated well with the disease activity. Only four cases had leukopenia at presentation pointing to no hindrance for aggressive chemotherapy. All cases received minimum of six courses of standard combination chemotherapy with or without local radiotherapy. Sixteen cases (50%) relapsed subsequently and were managed accordingly. A five year follow-up revealed a minimal 31 percent overall survival, and 18 percent of patients were disease free and well since the time of treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
A case of patient developing epithelial ovarian cancer 15 years after carcinoma of cervix treated successfully with radiotherapy, is reported. The patient has shown good initial response to chemotherapy and surgery.
Thirty thrombocytopaenic patients of acute leukaemias and myelodysplastic syndrome were transfused platelets collected from ABO-matched donors using Haemonetics V30 and V50 blood processors. Twenty-seven patients had septicaemia and/or splenomegaly; 2 patients had disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Pre-transfusion platelet count was 11.0 +/- 4.0 X 10(9)/L. The mean corrected count increments (CCI) 1 hour and 18 hours post-transfusion were 13.02 X 10(9)/L and 3.88 X 10(9)/L respectively, in the absence of DIC. Active bleeding stopped when platelet count was above 15.0 X 10(9)/L. There was no difference between the platelet yield from two blood processors.
