Placenta previa and previous cesarean section.

In a retrospective analysis over the six year period, January, 1973 to December, 1978, the incidence of placenta previa in cases with previous cesarean section (C.S.) was found to be 3.9 per cent as compared to an overall incidence of 1.9 per cent (p less than 0.01). The risk of placenta previa was greater in the pregnancy immediately following the cesarean section. The incidence of a morbidy adherent placenta was also significantly higher in these cases.

Response of adrenal catecholamine to a newly synthesized chemical radioprotector.

This study was undertaken to try a newly synthesized compound (1-acetyl hydrazinyl thiophenyl formamidine dihydrochlorie) as a chemical radioprotector and to observe its effects on adrenal catecholamine and protein bound iodine (PBI). After whole-body irradiation, the catecholamine and serum PBI levels decreased significantly but treatment with the drug before irradiation increased the same. The whole-body irradiation resulted in a 50% mortality within a fortnight whereas the use of the drug prevented it.

Placental localisation with 99mTc-labelled red blood cells.

The accuracy of placental localisation by radioisotopic scanning using 99mTc-labelled red blood cells has been estimated in 20 patients. The results have been correlated with the findings at delivery by direct and indirect methods. The accuracy of results regarding upper and lower segment insertion of the placenta was 90% in the present study.

Biogenic amine response to whole body irradiation. Prevention by APTH.

60Co whole body irradiation with 154.8 mC/kg (600 R) resulted in a mortality of 50 per cent within two weeks. Administration of 1-acetyl-3-phenylamidine thiocarbamide hydrochloride (APTH) 30 min before irradiation prevented this mortality. Irradiation eliminated neurosecretory material from the perikaryons of the supraoptic and paraventricular neurons, whereas APTH counteracted this action. APTH also increased the synthesis of bioamines (5-hydroxytryptamine, catecholamine and acetylcholine).
