Field-induced order and spin waves in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Ti207.

High resolution time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on Tb(2)Ti(2)0(7) reveal a rich low temperature phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field applied along [110]. In zero field at T = 0.4 K, Tb(2)Ti(2)0(7) is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. At higher fields, a magnetically ordered phase is induced, which supports spin wave excitations indicative of continuous, rather than Ising-like, spin degrees of freedom.

Changing trends in healthcare: implications for baccalaureate education, practice and employment.

The authors surveyed 96 hospitals and agencies in Massachusetts to determine: 1) the effect of the changes in health care delivery on RN utilization, particularly baccalaureate nurses, and 2) to identify educational changes necessary to prepare baccalaureate nursing graduates for employment and practice in the future. An analysis of the results of the survey of the 50 nurse executives who responded to the study identifies the projected needs and requirements of the service sector for delivering nursing care, and translates them into suggestions for revisions of the baccalaureate curriculum.

Gerontological nursing: overcoming barriers to preparation and practice.

1. The care available to the increasing number of elders requiring nursing home care is becoming more restrictive and expensive, and of poorer quality. 2. Educators and administrators must collaborate to develop strategies that will attract and retain prepared nurses to long-term care. 3. Studies have shown that nursing home employment of well-prepared nurses is cost-effective and increases the quality of patient care.

Small-intestinal mucosal antibodies against antigens of non-pathogenic luminal or mucosal bacteria in young children with and without diarrhoea.

Duodenal mucosal antibody against non-pathogenic bacteria, grown either from the luminal juices or the mucosa itself, was demonstrated for the first time in 7 of 8 children with diarrhoea and only 2 of 7 without diarrhoea. Neither group showed significant histological abnormalities on duodenal biopsy. An aetiological relation between the antibody and the persistence of postenteritis diarrhoea is possible.

Thyroid hormone concentrations in a large scale community survey. Effect of age, sex, illness and medication.

Total thyroid hormone concentrations have been measured in the course of a large scale community survey to determine the distribution of these variables in the normal population and to assess the effect of age, sex, previously undectected thyroid disease and medication upon these parameters. 2779 subjects were studied. Serum T4 concentrations were normally distributed. A progressive increase in T4 levels with age was noted in the males, and a smaller increase in females which was concealed by the raised T4 values secondary to oral contraceptive therapy in females under the age of 45. Serum T3 levels were also normally distributed. There was a small reduction in T3 with age in the males but this fall was not seen in the females. T3 values were relatively higher in females under the age of 45 but this increase was not noted after exclusion of subjects taking an oral contraceptive. The changes in thyroid hormone concentrations with age are relatively minor (particularly with respect to T3) in a randomly selected sample from an English town. It is suggested that the changes reported by other authors reflect the process of selection used, and the high frequency of undetected thyroid disease, other illness and medication in hospital-based communities.
