State prison clergy counselor role self-perceptions.

The effectiveness of state prison clergy counselors is, in part, due to the function of the individuals in their fulfillment of roles. The following research was conducted to find out the specific variables associated with state prison clergy counselor role self-perceptions. It examined those variables considered most important to the clergy counselors in self-perceptions based on role expectations and role performance. Results indicated self-perceived variables of pastoral, advisor, reality, insight, and development, respectively.

Functional components of reciprocity and their influences on maintaining and sustaining closest friendships.

Reciprocity is necessary in every relationship, if the relationship is to continue to exist. The present study was conducted to determine the functional components of reciprocity and their influences on maintaining and sustaining closest friendships. It examined specific criteria functionally associated with reciprocity in closest friendships on the basis of subjects' responses. Results suggested significant differences between males and females among five criteria.

Adolescent

Therapist perceived client social role dimensions of psychotherapeutic processes.

Therapist and client social role dimensions of therapy are important considerations in the rehabilitation process. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine therapist perceived client social role dimensions of psychotherapeutic processes. It was also conducted to find out their nature and frequency. Results indicated the most frequently perceived dimensions were: performance, ambiguity, strain, conflict and immersion.

Effects of controlled illumination levels upon verbal response latency in a color-word interference task.

When Ss in previous research were tested on a color-word interference task, the stimuli were generally said to have been presented in a well-lighted room, or with adequate lighting, or with a good light source, and the like. The present research attempted to find out the difference in performance between (a) Ss performing the task under a level of illumination of 5 ft-c, (b) Ss performing the task under a level of illumination of 150 ft-c, and (c) a control group performing the same task under a level of illumination of 50 ft-c. Results indicated that the Ss of both the 5 and 150 ft-c groups took significantly longer and made significantly more errors than the control group. It was concluded that levels of illumination under which the color-word interference task is performed significantly affect performance.

Adolescent

Graffiti and adolescent personality.

Graffiti has been studied for many years from many viewpoints. They have been used to explain accounts of people, styles of life, and assumed relationships. The present paper reports an attempt to analyze graffiti as outward manifestations of adolescent personality. Results suggested that different forms of graffiti could be interpreted from five characterizations of early adolescent personality: sexual maturity, self-identity, idealism, iconoclasm, and rebelliousness. Significant differences were found between boys and girls in numbers of inscriptions for each category. Further, the graffiti were analyzed in relation to early adolescent stages of development.

Experimental studies on food selective behavior in squirrel monkeys fed on riboflavin deficient diet.

The present study was conducted to determine the extent to which squirrel monkeys might demonstrate self-selective behavior when fed a riboflavin deficient diet, and the extent to which such a diet might lead to digestive disturbances, general weakness, lack of vigor, and loss of weight for such animals. Ss included 12 male squirrel monkeys approximately eight months of age. Experimental Ss, fed a riboflavin deficient diet, were tested on performance on a T-maze, a "vigor roller apparatus," and observed for digestive disturbances, general weakness, and loss of weight. Control Ss, fed a balanced diet, were given the same procedure. Significant results from the .001 to the .05 levels indicated experimental S s preferred a high riboflavin diet after the diet was deficient in this substance, and indicated digestive disturbances, lack of vigor, and loss of weight as compared with the control Ss.

Changes in galvanic skin response as affected by musical selection, sex, and academic discipline.

The present paper tested hypotheses that (a) music can influence anxiety; (b) differences in response to music may be found between males and females; and (c) differences in response may be found between music and nonmusic majors. Subjects included 100 music majors, (50 male and 50 female) and 100 nonmusic majors, (50 male and 50 female) randomly selected from students at North Park College, Chicago, Illinois. Test instruments included a pencil-maze, blindfold goggles, GSR apparatus, and a musical recording. All three hypotheses were substantiated in terms of levels of significance ranging from .01 to .05 for different Ss.

Anxiety

Experimental studies of food selective behavior in squirrel monkeys fed on riboflavin deficient diet.

A squirrel monkey, if it needs a particular dietary component because of a metabolic disorder or because that food has been excluded from its diet, will develop a specific hunger for the food. In cases where specific hungers show up clearly, four behaviors can be demonstrated: (1) The monkey prefers the food it needs to other foods that are also available; (2) It usually ingests large amounts of the food to meet its particular physiological requirements; (3) The animal will tend to eat the needed food even while the stomach is full; (4) When vitamin B2 is removed from its diet, a squirrel monkey will exhibit digestive disturbance, general weakness, a lack of vigor, and loss of weight.
