The eye in diabetes. Key points for the general practitioner.

Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication in people with diabetes. General practitioners can arrange annual screening for diabetic eye disease to detect early changes and prevent severe damage. Due to an ageing population the number of people with type II diabetes will increased dramatically during the next 20 years. This article outlines how general practitioners can prevent progressive loss of vision in their patients.

Sugar and fat, a recipe for disaster. New guidelines for the pharmacological management of diabetic dyslipidaemia.

Australia is embarking upon a more sophisticated approach to lipid-lowering, which is of particular relevance to those with diabetes. Diabetic dyslipidaemia is common and is usually managed in general practice. A step approach focusing on case finding, confirmation of diagnosis, lifestyle modification and pharmacological intervention should be cost effective in this high risk population (Figure 4). Although the focus of this review has been on diabetic dyslipidaemia, management should always consider overall cardiovascular risk.

Diet and Type 2 diabetes. Guidelines for general practice.

Type 2 diabetes (NIDDM) is common and increasing and results in enormous costs to all concerned. The average Australian diet is inappropriate for this condition, which regular exercise and healthy eating could delay or prevent even in high risk groups (family history, age over 50 years, over-weight). This article outlines a practical programme that general practitioners can use for people with, and people at risk of, Type 2 Diabetes and provides a comprehensive Further reading list.
