Windsurfer somatotypes.

On the basis of data gathered during a series of Pre-Olympic Trials and the World Championships, both held at Cagliari (Italy) in 1983 and 1986, respectively, the somatotypes of athletes practicing windsurfing were studied. The sample is composed of 79 male athletes: 22 Sardinians, 31 mainland Italians, and 26 Europeans. The Heath-Carter anthropometric method (1967) was used to somatotype the individuals under study. Both the total sample as well as the three subsamples are characterized by almost identical average values of the three components. A subsample of athletes was formed, who had obtained important performances in their carriers (victories in World, European and Italian championships, participation in the Olympic Games etc.). In this group of top athletes it was seen that the best results in windsurfing are obtained when there is an even development of the three components (2.57-2.68-2.97) or a slight ectomorphic predominance.

Adolescent

Middle phalangeal hair distribution in a Sardinian population sample.

Data relating to middle phalangeal hair (MPH) among unrelated individuals of both sexes born and living in Sardinia are presented. The occurrence of MPH is generally manifested on the 3-4-5 digits of both hands in the two sexes. The observed sex differences are statistically non-significant. The Sardinian sample seems to have a marked decrease in the frequency of individuals with MPH with regard to Mediterranean and other European populations.

Gc and C3 polymorphisms in South Sardinia.

The distribution of phenotypes and gene frequencies of the group-specific component (Gc) and C3 complement were studied in South Sardinia. The gene frequencies were: Gc1 = 0.7346; C3F = 0.1963.

Complement C3

Distribution of the ABO system and Rh factor in Sardinia.

The authors examine the genetic structure of the Sardinian population based on the gene frequencies of the ABO blood group system and the Rh factor. The sample, composed of 13,972 individuals, is subdivided on the basis of altitude zones (mountain, internal hills, coastal hills and plains) and by historical-geographic zones. Also examined are the frequencies of a group of communities of different altitude and historical-geographic zones. The results point to genetic heterogeneity within both altitude and historical-geographic zones as well as within the single communities. A distribution gradient is seen for the IA and I0 alleles of the ABO system, namely: mountains, internal hills, coastal hills, plains.

ABO Blood-Group System

AcP and EsD polymorphisms in South Sardinia.

A sample of the South Sardinia population was studied with respect to acid phosphatase (AcP) and esterase D (EsD) enzymes. The gene frequencies were: AcPA = 0.326, AcPB = 0.607, AcPC = 0.067 and EsD1 = 0.883. The results were compared with those of other Italian populations.

Carboxylesterase

AK and ADA polymorphisms in South Sardinia.

A sample of the South Sardinia population was studied with respect to adenylate kinase (AK) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) enzymes. The gene frequencies were: AK1 0.975 and ADA1 = 0.933. The results were compared with those of other Italian populations.
