Pasteurella infection in a total knee arthroplasty.

Hematogenous infection of a total joint arthroplasty is a serious complication that has well-known etiologies. One of the most unusual inciting events is a bite wound. Pasteurella multocida is an anaerobic organism found in the mouths of mammals that has rarely been found to infect total knee arthroplasties. Prompt recognition of such an infection and prophylactic treatment with a penicillinase-resistant penicillin should maximize the patient's opportunity to eradicate such an infection.

This article is designed to help dentists make better decisions regarding capitation programs. It focuses on approaches to costs that can be useful. An example is given that illustrates how these cost concepts might be used to analyze a capitation proposal.

Historical background: patellofemoral pain in young people.

This article examines the evolution of the current understanding of what patellofemoral pain is, or is not, in young people. It focuses on the articular cartilage of the patella because chondromalacia patellae (softened articular cartilage) was almost unanimously presumed to be the primary cause of patellofemoral pain in young people until recently.

A delayed transverse avulsion fracture of the superior pole of the patella after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Patella fractures following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using central one third patella-tendon autograft is a recognized although rarely reported complication of this procedure. Twelve reports of patella fractures after ACL reconstruction exist in the literature, although only half of these fractures occurred postoperatively. Two of the nonacute fractures occurred approximately 6 months postoperatively, one of them being an avulsion of the inferior pole of the patella and the other being a displaced transverse avulsion fracture of the patella. We report on a nondisplaced transverse avulsion fracture of the superior pole of the patella that occurred 1 year after ACL reconstruction despite bone grafting the defect in the patella at the time of surgery. We are unaware of any report of this kind in the literature.
