Esthetic restoration of endodontically treated teeth: factors that affect prognosis.

Restoration of endodontically treated teeth involves a complex system of components and component interfaces designed to resist force. Dental materials, forces on teeth, clinical circumstances, and restorative design determine restoration success. A new classification evaluates number of canals, amount of remaining tooth surface, chamber space, canal quality, and canal orientation.

Restoration of endodontically treated teeth: review, classification, and post design.

Restoration of endodontically treated teeth requires knowledge of material science, defect analysis, force analysis, and mechanical engineering principles of preparation and design. This article reviews the basic principles of the restorative concepts and presents an approach to restoration of teeth, based on a new classification. The component strength, component interface strength, and analysis of force intensity, frequency, and direction are discussed; the restoration design is reviewed, including post selection and passive engagement posts. A new post of a "segmentally parallel" design is introduced.

Treatment considerations for posterior laboratory-fabricated composite resin restorations.

A variety of techniques are currently available to restore dentition in the posterior region, and the selection of the proper modality is dependent upon evaluation and satisfaction of numerous criteria. Direct materials provide limited strength in the posterior segment, and full-coverage indirect techniques (e.g., crown restorations) often require the destruction of sound tooth structure. When proper case selection, preparation design, and clinical protocols are utilized, a laboratory-processed composite resin (belleGlass, Kerr/Sybron, Orange, CA) can provide an optimal means by which to successfully restore posterior dentition without compromising the existing tooth structure.

Porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are the ultimate esthetic art form in dentistry. Dentists need to know the evolution of this art form and basic concepts before entering into advanced applications. Production of veneers in a laboratory or at chairside needs to be understood so that logical choices of which techniques and materials to use can be made. This article reviews history, definition, tooth preparation, variation of construction techniques, placement, clinical applications, and repair in light of recent international literature.

Dental Cavity Preparation↗

Provisional restorations using the Provipont system.

Pending the fabrication of permanent restorations, temporary restorations are used to maintain the function and provide the necessary information for accurate fabrication of permanent restorations. Therefore, the quality and appropriateness of materials used in temporary restorations are important to the final results. This article introduces a new material system for temporary restorations. A case report is used to illustrate the technique and the discussion.

Porcelain veneers: concept, preparation, temporization, laboratory, and placement.

The success of porcelain veneers depends on knowledge of chairside and laboratory techniques. Improvements in porcelain materials and techniques have dramatically increased the ease and success of these procedures. The learning objective of this article is a review of the new porcelain veneer techniques. The same case is followed from conception to completion, describing and illustrating the techniques.

Periodontal splinting of anterior teeth.

Periodontal splinting is a misunderstood art form. Although the techniques require a high degree of clinical skill and diagnostic expertise, they save a significant number of teeth. This article provides step-by-step techniques for periodontal splinting using composite, intracoronal wire, extracoronal mesh, metal reinforcement and crown and bridge.

Perception aesthetics and light-cured composites.

Perception aesthetics is the aspect of aesthetic dentistry concerned with patients' perception of their dental appearance. This article discusses how perception aesthetics can be affected by various factors, including the size, color, and shape of the teeth.

Aesthetic guidelines for posterior composite restorations.

The development of composite resin materials that combine the required strength and wear resistance with the appropriate color palate which resembles natural dentition has enabled the clinician to successfully place composite restorative materials in the posterior region. Appropriate techniques have been developed for utilization of the new materials. This article reviews the selection of posterior composite materials, indications, and force factors. Preparation guidelines are presented, including a review of the criteria established by G.V. Black. The article also reviews the indications, preparation guidelines, bonding materials, composite placement techniques, and finishing protocols for posterior composite restorations. Three case presentations illustrate the clinical procedure. The learning objective of this article is to enhance the knowledge of materials currently available for posterior tooth-color restorations and their application techniques.
