Determination of the absolute configuration of (-)-(3R)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-5-phenylpentanoic acid from Polygonum salicifolium.

The absolute configuration of the title compound has been determined after its enzymatic hydrolysis to 3-hydroxy-5-phenylpentanoic acid, esterification, and identification of the enantiomerically pure methyl (3R)-hydroxy-5-phenylpentanoate by HPLC on Chiralcel(R)OD-H. For reasons of inconsistent literature data, enantioselective reductions of methyl 3-oxo-5-phenylpentanoate have been reinspected and the stereochemical outcome unequivocally confirmed by both chiroptical and HPLC retention data.

Phenylvaleric acid and flavonoid glycosides from Polygonum salicifolium.

(3R)-O-beta-D-Glucopyranosyloxy-5-phenylvaleric acid (1), (3R)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-5-phenylvaleric acid n-butyl ester (2), and a new dihydrochalcone diglycoside 4'-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-glucopyranosyl]oxy-2'-hydroxy-3', 6'-dimethoxydihydrochalcone (3), together with six known flavonoid glycosides [kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (= astragalin) (4), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (5), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (= isoquercitrin) (6), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (= hyperoside) (7), quercetin-3-O-(2''-O-galloyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (8), and quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucuronopyranoside (9)] were isolated from the aerial parts of Polygonum salicifolium. The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed by spectroscopic (UV, IR, ESI-MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR), chemical (methylation, enzymatic hydrolysis, partial synthesis), and chromatographic methods (HPLC, Chiralcel OD). The flavonoid glycosides (4-9) demonstrated scavenging properties toward the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical in TLC autographic assays.

Rhamnetin 3-p-coumaroylrhamninoside from Rhamnus petiolaris.

From the berries of Rhamnus petiolaris a new acylated flavonol glycoside was isolated and identified as rhamnetin 3-O-[3""-O-(p-coumaroyl)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1-->3)- alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1-->6)]-beta-D-galactopyranoside. Additionally, five known flavonol glycosides, rhamnetin, rhamnazin, quercetin and kaempferol 3-rhamninosides, and quercetin 3-rhamnoside were isolated.

Two phenylpropanoid glycosides from Leonurus glaucescens.

Two new phenylpropanoid glycosides, leonosides A and B, and two known glycosides lavandulifolioside and verbascoside, were isolated from the aerial parts of Leonurus glaucescens. On the basis of chemical and spectral evidence, leonosides A and B were shown to be beta-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-ethyl-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1---- 2)-alpha-L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-feruloyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and beta-(3-hydroxy, 4-methoxyphenyl)-ethyl-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1----2)- alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-feruloyl-beta-D-glucopyranosi de, respectively.

Phenylpropanoid glycosides from Marrubium alysson.

From the aerial parts of Marrubium alysson a new phenylpropanoid glycoside, alyssonoside, and five known glycosides, verbascoside (= acteoside), leucosceptoside A, martynoside, forsythoside B and leucosceptoside B were isolated. On the basis of spectral data, the structure of the new compound was elucidated as beta-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethyl-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-O- [beta-D-apiopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-4-O-feruloyl-beta-D-glucopyra noside.

Phlinosides D and E, phenylpropanoid glycosides, and iridoids from Phlomis linearis.

Two new phenylpropanoid glycosides, phlinosides D and E were isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Phlomis linearis, along with the known iridoid glucosides, lamiide, ipolamiide and auroside (= 5-hydroxy-8-epiloganin). On the basis of chemical and spectral evidence the structures of phlinosides D and E were determined as 3,4-dihydroxy-beta-phenylethoxy-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1----2)-al pha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-feruloyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and 3,4-dihydroxy-beta-phenylethoxy-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1----2) -alpha-L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-feruloyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, respectively.

Three new phenylpropanoid glycosides, phlinosides A, B and C were isolated from a methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Phlomis linearis. On the basis of chemical and spectral evidence their structures were determined as 3,4-dihydroxy-beta-phenylethoxy-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1----2)-a lpha-L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-caffeoyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, 3,4 dihydroxy-beta-phenylethoxy-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1----2)-alpha- L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-caffeoyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and 3,4-dihydroxy-beta-phenylethoxy-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1----2) -alpha- L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1----3)-4-O-caffeoyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, respectively.

Prevention of reflux by a ureteric intussusception valve: a preliminary study on dogs.

In 10 dogs in anti-reflux procedure by intussusception of the ureter is examined. The surgical procedure is developed and the urinary flow and prevention of the anti-reflux valve are explored. The study shows that an invagination is technically possible and that reflux can be prevented in half the cases without significant obstruction of the urinary flow.
