Social policy issues in narcotics abuse.

Social Policy in regard to drug abuse is presently the subject of intense controversy in this country. This paper examines the relationships between various policies with major emphasis on Treatment and Law enforcement. Specifically, it is recommended that greater use be made of civil commitment programs that give heroin and cocaine addicts a clear choice, that is, personal freedom is made contingent on drug-free, responsible behavior.

Human reactions to the Nazi concentration camps: a summing up.

With the passing of time, it becomes increasingly unlikely that major studies of concentration camp survivors will appear. Nearly forty years have gone by since the camps were liberated. Most survivors have died, and their children are approaching middle age. This paper provides a brief summary of the available data. Beginning with an account of the events leading to the Holocaust, it goes on to summarize the major types of psychological defenses employed by the prisoners, and also describes the group or social activity in the camps. The long lasting psychological, psychiatric, and medical consequences of internment are then reviewed. The paper concludes with a discussion of studies of the children of survivors.

A systems model of schizophrenic dysfunction.

A review of pertinent literature suggests that central integrative, as opposed to peripheral, systems are primarily at fault in schizophrenia. More specifically, it is proposed that the central decision apparatus, defined as the subsystems which determine goals and end-states, is intermittently dysfunctional. This dysfunction, in turn, leads to a decoupling of the negative feedback system which normally aligns responses with the desired goal. The failure of these central systems is accompanied by an increase of diffuse activity within neural systems, semiautonomous activity on the part of subsystems, and a partial failure to regulate arousal systems. The paper closes with suggestions for future research in schizophrenia.
