[Niemann-Pick disease type C in monozygotic twins].

The Authors describe two monochorionic twins affected by Niemann-Pick disease type C with a clinical picture beginning in the neonatal age and with a progressive mental deterioration, loss of speech and spasticity started at 30 months. The importance of cultured skin fibroblasts is emphasized. The evidence of a defective intracellular cholesterol esterification is established as an intrinsic feature of Niemann-Pick disease type C.

[Hyperglycemic, hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma in the pediatric age].

A case of non-ketotic hyperglycaemic-hyperosmolar diabetic coma in a 8 yr. old boy after a severe mental trauma is reported. This joins the 18 similar cases of paediatric age published up to now. On the basis of the results of virological and immunological investigations, insulinogenic function and psychodiagnosis, the diagnosis, aetiopathogenesis and therapy of this unusual event are discussed. The desirability of measuring plasma osmolarity in children diabetic coma is stressed.

Age Factors↗

[Family counseling in pediatrics].

In this article it is outlined the medical biopsychosocial approach with particular emphasis on the family viewed as the primary health care agency. It is presented the concept of consultation, its advantages and applications within the clinical work with families.

Child↗

[Psychoses and relational games].

This paper examines psychosis as a manifestation of the internal logic of a relation system. Our interest thus shifts from the singular individual to what may be considered his significant system--the family. The paper shows how the systemic view of this specific clinical syndrome has developed since the initial researches.

[Handicap and family: a systemic approach to the family of handicapped children].

In this paper the authors use their own experience to focus on some of the problems of families with handicapped children. They use a systemic model as a paradigm to describe various levels of analysis and interactional processes within and between the various family systems. This also enables the authors to shape their solution to the complexity of the observed phenomena.

[Handicap and normality: needs and interventions].

The purpose of this paper is to restore the concept of "handicap" to its original etymologic meaning as a term that identifies a relationship rather than a property concerning only one subject. If the handicap is not considered only in terms of a single person but of the relationship between him and his environmental context, it is possible to avoid the dual ideological constraint whereby people are condemned to no-way-out disability or society is stigmatized as the receptacle for all ills. The wellbeing of the disabled and society alike can become feasible as a result of the flexible rediscovery of this relationship and the formulation of original new creative approaches to normality.

Persons with Disabilities↗

[Problems in the families of handicapped children].

The authors use clinical examples to describe their experience as child neuropsychiatrists treating the handicap. They emphasize the need for integration between services and the importance of structured interviews with families as well as rehabilitation and therapy for the child. Special attention must be dedicated to the patient during the adolescent phase, which is a crucial one for his/her family. He still needs to be supported and actively involved in what is a potentially positive transformation process.

[The usefulness of the family myth concept within the therapeutic process].

In the three clinical histories reported in this paper, the connection between myth and relational pathology is definitely evident. In addition, strategic suggestions are made as to how to bring about positive changes in therapy by exploring the individual resources of each family member, unconsciously hidden in the effort to preserve the myth. The preliminary step, as shown by the case histories, emphasizes the role of the myth and the significant contributions it provided and is still providing to the whole family.

[Miocamycin in pediatrics. Results of multicenter study in Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta].

A multicenter clinical trial has been fulfilled by 18 Paediatric Hospital Centers in the regions of Piedmont and Aosta Valley, on 139 cases, concerning the use of a new macrolide, miocamycin, in the therapy of various infective diseases, such as upper and lower respiratory tract infections, ear and nose, throat, teeth affections, minor surgery, some contagious diseases. The results of this trial show a good effectiveness of the drug, consisting in a rapid disappearance of the clinical symptoms, a high degree of systemic and gastroenteric tolerability, and very poor side effects.

[Skull injuries in children. Clinico-statistical findings in patients of the pediatric ward of the Maria Vittoria Hospital 1979-1983].

The present review analyzes the available epidemiologic data referred to all cases of children head injuries admitted to the Pediatric Division of Maria Vittoria Hospital in the years from 1979 to 1983. In this survey the authors investigate "minor" head injuries, namely cases which do not require any neurosurgical act. The statistical research emphasizes an interesting linkage between head injury, its clinical, Rx. and EEG data, and children's age, as economic, social, familial situations.

[The care of children with neurological damage. Reflections on 2 years of work at the Maria Victoria Hospital of Turin].

The Authors emphasize the importance of this disease and its present high frequency among the population.

[Non-verbal communication between-mother and child (author's transl)].

In this preliminary study the authors try a functional analysis of the mother-child dyad's communicative behaviour during the first year of life. They single out in the operant discrimination and in the model those processes which underlie the development of this particular communicative relationship. This analysis if done in the nursing, crying and playing context.
