[Serum concentration of T3, T4, FT3, FT4, TSH during cycloergometer muscular exercise].

The serum concentrations of total and free thyroid hormones and of TSH have been determined in 10 trained subjects before, during and after exercise on a bicycle ergometer. The concentrations of T4 and FT4 increase during the muscular exercise and reduce 30 minutes after the end of work; the decrease is statistically meaningful for the T4. The concentrations of TSH and T3 reduce 30 minutes after the end of work on a bicycle ergometer. The serum concentration of FT3 and of hematocrit doesn't presents any statistically meaningful variation during and after the muscular exercise. The results achieved in our work are in support of the hypothesis that the physic and intense exercise would involve the thyroid gland exalting its activity.

[Intravenous glucose tolerance test during muscular exercise].

We have valued in 8 individuals subjected to muscular moderate work the degree of use of glucose in the body tissues, measured by means of K-Conard, and the role that holds the insulin hormone in this particular condition. The IVGTT was carried out in 8 individuals, at first, in condition of relax. In the same individuals, the day after, the IVGTT was carried out after 5 minutes from the beginning of muscular work to cycloergometer set a 50 watts for a term of 30 minutes. The study demonstrates that, during the muscular moderate work, we have an improvement, statistically significant, of the use of glucose, measured by means of K-Conard (t = 2.42; P less than 0.05). Then, it demonstrates that the muscular moderate work has not any influence on plasmatic concentrations of insulin.

[Comparative evaluation of several methods of determining anti-streptolysin O].

The Authors have carried out some experiences on four tests for the detection of anti O streptolysin, determining in 210 samples of sera: 1. the antistreptolysin titer according to Rantz and Randall; 2. the antistreptolysin titer according to the latex reaction; 3. five different antistreptococcal antibodies (ASO, ASK, ASHA, ADN-aseB, NAD-ase) with a rapid multi-purpose test for a simultaneous detection; 4. the antistreptolysin titer according to Aso Quantum method. The results obtained on the 210 samples of sera were compared. The relationship between the four methods were examined.

Inhibition of plasmin by antithrombin-heparin complex. II. During thrombolytic therapy in man.

The role of antithrombin as an inhibitor of plasmin in the presence and absence of heparin was studied during thrombolytic therapy in 12 patients with vascular occlusive disease. The extent of plasmin-antithrombin-(heparin) complex formation was studied by intravenous injection of iodine-labelled antithrombin (5-20 muCi) and quantitation of the amount of antithrombin bound to plasmin. In the absence of heparin, less than 0.8% of the labelled antithrombin was recovered in the plasmin-antithrombin complex but between 1.2 and 4.8% following injection of 5000 iu of heparin. Thus only between 3 and 11% of the in vivo formed plasmin is neutralized by antithrombin-heparin complex. Repeated activation of the fibrinolytic system resulted in a shortening of the plasma radioactivity half-life of labelled antithrombin from 2.45 to 2.03 d in the absence of heparin (three patients), and from 3.13 to 2.35 d following heparin administration (two patients). This increased turnover does not result in a decrease of the plasma antithrombin level.

[The determination of phosphohexose isomerase in patients with cancer of breast and uterus. A comparison with other tests (author's transl)].

The levels of PHI are evaluated in 94 patients, who are classified by histological, scintigraphycal, radiological, biochemical and clinical test in: 16 patients, who suffer from some premalignant lesions of breast and uterus, 15 patients, who suffer from cancer of breast without metastases, 20 patients who suffer from cancer of breast with metastases, 18 patients who suffer from with cancer of uterus without metastases, 25 patients who suffer from cancer of uterus with metastases. The PHI activity is also evaluated in relation to the activity of other enzymes (LDH, AIP, G-GT). It has been revealed that: a) the PHI activity keeps within limits of normal value in patients who suffer from some pre-malignant lesions; b) all the patients suffer from cancer of breast without metastases show normal levels of PHI; c) in the patients with cancer of breast with metastases: 5 patients show normal levels of PHI, 5 patients show levels of PHI within limits, certainly 10 patients show pathological levels; d) in patients with cancer of uterus without metastases the value of enzymes results pathological in 6 patients, 6 patients show levels of PHI within limits that are above average and 6 patients show normal levels of PHI; e) the value of PHI always results high in patients with cancer of uterus with metastases.

Platelet-endotoxin interaction: a review.

The studies reviewed in the present manuscript outline the effects of bacterial endotoxins on human and animal platelets. In animals the endotoxin administration is followed by thrombocytopenia, presence of platelet aggregates in the blood vessels of several organs, appearance of appreciable quantities of serotonin in plasma and increased platelet factor 3 availability. These in vivo effects can readily be explained by the in vitro demonstration that endotoxin aggregates platelets, induces release of vasoactive amines and adenine nucleotides and activates platelet factor 3. There is substantial evidence suggesting that the mechanism of this animal platelet-endotoxin interaction is immunological and complement dependent. In humans thrombocytopenia is frequently observed in endotoxemia as encountered during Gram-negative sepsis indicating that platelets are involved in some of the biological effects endotoxin. In vitro experiments demonstrate that several endotoxin preparations significantly enhance a weak procoagulant activity of human platelets different from platelet factor 3.

[Enterobacteria and endotoxins in abdominal surgical pathology. Critical review and clinico-experimental studies].

A detailed critical review on the role of endotoxins from gram-negative bacteria in the pathogenesis of most of the intestinal experimental models of surgical interest is presented. Data of an investigation on 10 cases of acute appendicitis and 2 cases of intestinal occlusion associated with toxaemia are then presented: in all these cases the Limulus test significatively revealed the presence of endotoxin in the blood and in the peritoneal fluid, also in absence of bacteria in the blood. The implications of these results and the use of the test in clinical practice are discussed.

[Rubella antibody in a sample of Foggia (Italy) population (author's transl)].

The Authors have found the following distribution of haemoagglutination inhibiting rubella antibodies in the women of about 18 years of Foggia: 13.9% negative serum (titer larger than or equal to 1:8) in a sample of 620 subjects. The seropositivity is similar to that in other regions of Italy. The Authors would suggest the adoption of antirubella vaccination at least for immunologically unprotected fertile women where the embryo is at risk when illness is contracted in pregnancy.
