Semi-automatic analysis of fire debris

Automated analysis of fire residues involves a strategy which deals with the wide variety of received criminalistic samples. Because of unknown concentration of accelerant in a sample and the wide range of flammable products, full attention from the analyst is required. Primary detection with a photoionisator resolves the first problem, determining the right method to use: the less responsive classical head-space determination or absorption on active charcoal tube, a better fitted method more adapted to low concentrations can thus be chosen. The latter method is suitable for automatic thermal desorption (ATD400), to avoid any risk of cross contamination. A PONA column (50 mx0.2 mm i.d.) allows the separation of volatile hydrocarbons from C(1) to C(15) and the update of a database. A specific second column is used for heavy hydrocarbons. Heavy products (C(13) to C(40)) were extracted from residues using a very small amount of pentane, concentrated to 1 ml at 50 degrees C and then placed on an automatic carousel. Comparison of flammables with referenced chromatograms provided expected identification, possibly using mass spectrometry. This analytical strategy belongs to the IRCGN quality program, resulting in analysis of 1500 samples per year by two technicians.

Titanium pigmentation. An electron probe microanalysis study.

A patient had an unusual pigmentary disease induced by titanium dioxide. The use of a topical cream containing titanium dioxide caused a xanthomalike appearance on the patient's penis. Electron probe microanalysis was valuable in establishing the cause of this balanitis.

[Macroglobulinemia (Waldenström) with specific cutaneous nodules (author's transl)].

The authors present a case of Waldenström's disease in a 68-year-old woman. The only symptoms were several nodes on the leg. The pathological, and immunological finding showed the presence of lymphoplasmocytic cells in the middle dermis; there was a positive reaction with the anti-IgM serum. Ultrastructural studies showed large cells with dilated reticulum and abnormal IgM globulin was found in the serum in large amounts. The rate of the others immunoglobulins was normal. There was a lymphoplasmocytic proliferation in the bone medullar. The specific cutaneous manifestation of the Waldenström's disease are 1) large "plaques" or/and 2) nodes. The pathological studie shows numerous lymphoplasmocytic or immunoblastic cells and sometimes the presence of an amorphous material which is the abnormal globulin.

[Pachyonychia congenita. Three familial cases. Effects of the treatment by aromatic retinoid (RO 10.9359) (author's transl)].

The authors present three familial cases of Schonfeld's type I pachyonychia. This syndrome represents the association of pachyonychia with palmoplantar keratodermia, frictionnal keratosis and bullae, hyperidrosis, oral leucokeratosis. This genotype is present in the remaining family. Traumatisms produce or increase several symptoms as: a) palmoplantar keratodermia: voluminous callus confined to site of pressure; b) hyperkeratosis of the nails, with hyperplasia and papillomatosis of the nail bed and the hyponychium due to the frequents microtraumatisms of the finger-pulps; c) oral leucokeratosis. The authors describe the painful character of the palmoplantar lesions: walking and working with the hands are very difficult. They assert the outstanding action of aromatic retinoid (RO 10.9359) which entertains a dramatic improvement of the palmoplantar and pachyonychia lesions, the decrease of the pain. Now, the patient life is normal. In these three cases, an hyperuricemia is associated: this feature is probably a fortuitous association. One of these patients has a Lesch-Nyhan's syndrome.

[Dermatomyositis associated with lethal pulmonary fibrosis and cutaneous necrosis (author's transl)].

This clinical report concerns a 57 year old woman with dermatomyositis and cardiac involvement. After an apparent clinical and biological improve of the muscular and myocardic symptoms, a pulmonary involvement was reported. There was a persistent high rate of lacticodeshydrogenase serum activity. Then, cutaneous ulcerations and necrosis appeared on the extremities of limbs. Dermatomyositis associated with cutaneous necrosis and pulmonary fibrosis has a very severe prognosis.

[Eruptive generalized syringomas, milium and atrophoderma vermiculata. Nicolau and Balus' syndrome (author's transl)].

It appears justified to isolate under the term syndrome of Nicolau and Balus', a group of deformities that include eruptive syringomas of the disseminated micropapular type, milium cysts and atrophoderma vermiculata. We present here a highly typical observation of an 11-year-old child whose mother also presented with eruptive syringomas. This syndrome accentuates the semiological value of disseminated syringomas and atrophoderma vermiculata, which often occur in the context of a complex syndrome. In addition, an associated elastopathy was discovered by light- and electron-microscopic observations.
