Branchio-oto (BO) syndrome and oculo-auriculo-vertebral phenotype: overlapping clinical findings in a child from a BO family.

A three-generation BO family is presented: the proband showed, in addition to branchio-oto malformations, a severe condition with growth retardation, mandibular hypoplasia and vertebral anomalies resembling the oculo-auriculo-vertebral (OAV) phenotype. This family study supports the hypothesis of Rollnick and Kaye that the OAV spectrum may represent, in some cases, an extreme component of the BOR syndrome. The finding has relevant implications for genetic counselling regarding both conditions.

Euxyl K 400: incidence of sensitization, patch test concentration and vehicle.

The aim of this study was to verify the most suitable vehicle and concentration for testing Euxyl K 400 and its individual ingredients, and to evaluate the prevalence of sensitization to this preservative over the years in Italy. From January 1991 to October 1994, Euxyl K 2.5% pet. was positive in 99 patients (35 male, 64 female) out of 3455 (2.8%). Of these, 22 out of 855 patients had a positive reaction during 1991 (2.6%), 29 out of 1037 in 1992 (2.8%), 28 out of 858 in 1993 (3.3%), and 20 out of 705 in 1994 (2.8%). 51 of the 99 patients with a reaction to Euxyl K 400 2.5% pet. showed a positive reaction to dibromodicyanobutane 0.5% pet. and 2 to phenoxyethanol 5% pet. The results of patch testing with serial dilutions of Euxyl K 400 in different vehicles indicate that water is a good vehicle for testing the preservative. However, since Euxyl K 400 is only hydrosoluble to a limited extent, the maximum concentration that can be tested using water is 0.5%, and so with this concentration about 40% of sensitized patients are missed. The results of patch testing with serial dilutions of Euxyl K 400 in petrolatum demonstrate that concentrations lower than 2.5% are not suitable for detection of all sensitized patients. Euxyl K 400 in ethanol frequently causes irritant reactions without offering significant advantages in detecting sensitized patients.

Sunscreen sensitization: a three-year study.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade UV filters have been incorporated in a large number of cosmetic products. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of sunscreen allergy in patients with a suspected photodermatitis. METHODS: 108 patients were patch-tested with the Gruppo Italiano Ricerca Dermatiti da Contatto e Ambientali (GIRDCA) standard series and photopatch-tested with the photopatch series. RESULTS: Allergy and/or photoallergy to sunscreening agents was diagnosed in 8 subjects (7.4%). Oxybenzone was positive in 4 patients, isoproyl dibenzoylmethane in 3 patients, p-aminobenzoic acid and 2-ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate in 1 patient, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our results obtained during a 3-year period (January 1990 to June 1993) confirm that sunscreens are presently the commonest photoallergens.

Pseudoxanthoma-elasticum-like papillary dermal elastolysis: another case.

Pseudoxanthoma-elasticum-like papillary dermal elastolysis is a rare acquired idiopathic non-inflammatory elastolytic disorder. This disease, described in aged females, is characterized by asymptomatic skin lesions of the neck and supraclavicular regions clinically resembling pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Histological and ultrastructural examinations show a total loss of the elastic fibres in the papillary dermis. We report another case of this entity in a 69-year-old Italian woman.
