Tadini, the man who invented the artificial lens.
Tadini, an Italian by birth, was an itinerant ophthalmologist living in the second half of the eighteenth century. The eye operations which he performed at many places throughout Europe are documented by his advertisements in newspapers of the day. It is likely that Tadini was the first to conceive the possibility for intraocular correction of aphakia. At any rate, Casanova's memoirs record a meeting with Tadini and make mention of the oculist's box of artificial glass lenses for placement in the eye. Presumably, Casanova conveyed Tadini's idea to Casaamata, an ophthalmic surgeon in Dresden who was the first to actually attempt correction of aphakia with artificial lens implantation.

[Coating of artificial lens with methylcellulose (author's transl)].
The corneal haze which in the past often followed lens implantation was clearly decreased by applying one drop of a 1% solution of methylcellulose into the lens immediately prior to its insertion. It is surmised that by coating the lens in this way injury to the corneal endothelium is prevented. Methylcellulose caused little if any rise of intraocular pressure postoperatively.--The preparation of a sterile solution of methylcellulose is described in detail. Finally, it is important to stress that--in addition to applying methylcellulose--one should always attempt to work under an air bubble.
[Clamp for operation of blepharochalasis (author's transl)].
We designed an instrument to facilitate the operation for blepharochalasis. The skin to be excised is lifted into a fold and the latter than stabilized by tightly clamping the two layers of skin at its base with the new instrument. In this way the situation after excision can be simulated and the position of the future scar and the apposition of the lids against the globe can be estimated in advance and the fold can be adjusted if required. In addition, the compression of the skin decreases the tendency for bleeding.
Laser-coagulation of ruptured fixation suture after lens-implantation.
Before it was known that polyamide tends to dissolve in tissue, nylon sutures were used to fixate 2-loop-Medallion-lenses to the iris. As was to be expected cases turned up in which the suture had ruptured. This situation entails the danger of contact between the end of the broken suture and the endothelium. By coagulation of the suture with a laser beam the danger was eliminated.

The experience with 100 primary implantations of the 2-loop-Medaillon-lens is reported. In 4% complications occured that decreased the visual outcome. The avoidance of complications is discussed. In the author's opinion implanting artificial lenses is a suitable method of visual rehabilitation - connected with little risk - of patients who are not suitable for correction with glasses or contact lenses. The indications and contraindications are discussed. The main indication is a onesided cataract.

[Cytarabine treatment of herpes zoster (author's transl)].
Systemic treatment of herpes zoster becomes possible by cytarabine. Complications of herpes zoster ophthalmicus such as relapsing corneal ulceration, perforation or scarring, secondary glaucoma, Argyll Robertson pupils, extraocular muscle palsies, and optic atrophy, as well as postherpetic neuralgia can be prevented by the use of this drug. For this reason the authors believe treatment with cytarabine to be the therapy of choice in herpes zoster.
