Bleeding in patients with activated partial thromboplastin time inhibitors.

We present a case in which an activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) inhibitor may have significantly contributed to prolonged bleeding in a patient and review five similar cases. The possibility of an aPTT inhibitor should be considered in the evaluation of patients with unexplained prolongation of PTT and PT. Such patients may develop significant bleeding even in the absence of other hematologic abnormalities.

Plasma cholinesterase activity in bank blood.

Plasma cholinesterase activity was periodically measured in bank blood. Of the initial plasma cholinesterase activity 87% was retained after 21 days of storage at 4 C in citrate-phosphate-dextrose solution. In addition, plasma frozen for 7 weeks at -70 C showed no decrease in enzyme activity. No difference could be demonstrated in the stability of the enzyme related to whether the blood was stored in citrate-phosphate-dextrose or in acid-citrate-dextrose solution. Bank blood transfusion prior to or during succinylcholine administration should not significantly alter the duration of action of succinylcholine, and would probably be effective in the management of prolonged apnea resulting from a deficiency of this enzyme.

Thromboelastographic changes in carcinoma: an animal model.

The dynamics of blood clotting using a thrombelastogram (TEG) are depicted after the injection of V2 carcinoma cells or control heterologous peritoneal exudates in New Zealand hares. Changes in the TEG configurations of native blood samples vs. celite activated samples run simultaneously provide a qualitative assessment of the presence of carcinoma.
