Tyrosinemia type I treated by NTBC: how does AFP predict liver cancer?

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinemia type I is associated with an increased risk of liver cancer development. The formation of the pathogenic fumarylacetoacetate is prevented by 2-(2-nitro-4-3 trifluoro-methylbenzoyl)-1,3-cyclohexanedione (NTBC). Still, some patients with NTBC treatment develop liver cancer. A rise of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is an indicator of liver cancer. AIM: To study the predictive value of AFP in tyrosinemia type I patients for the discrimination between patients at high and low risk of liver cancer development. METHODS: We examined the course of AFP values of 11 Dutch patients with tyrosinemia type I treated by NTBC, of whom four were diagnosed with liver cancer. RESULTS: The four patients with liver cancer had a course of AFP different from the other patients in either velocity of the decrease of AFP, achieving normal AFP and/or having a rise of AFP concentrations. CONCLUSION: Apart from a rise of AFP, a slow AFP decrease, and never normalizing levels of AFP are important predictors of liver cancer development in further life.

Colloidal silver as an antimicrobial agent: fact or fiction?

OBJECTIVE: Colloidal silver preparations are marketed on the internet as omnipotent antimicrobial agents, but scientific support for these claims is lacking. This study reports the results of in vitro tests of colloidal silver's antimicrobial activity against several pathogenic or non-pathogenic microorganisms. METHOD: Three samples of colloidal silver were tested: one available commercially on the internet (silver concentration of 22 ppm) and two samples (concentrations of 403 and 413 ppm) which were prepared in our laboratory using standard chemical methods. RESULTS: In an agar-well diffusion assay none of the three colloidal silver solutions had any effect on the growth of the test organisms. All tested bacterial strains were sensitive to ciprofloxacin. Colloidal silver 22 ppm showed no bactericidal activity in phenol coefficient tests. CONCLUSION: As the tested colloidal silver solutions did not show any antimicrobial effect in vitro on the microorganisms, claims of colloidal silver's antimicrobial potency are misleading and there is no place for it as an antiseptic.

[Treatment of coronary disease with elantan. Results of a multicenter study].

10,229 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) took part in a multicenter study to verify the efficacy and tolerance of a 14 days lasting therapy with elantan under practical conditions. The majority of patients with an average age of 59 +/- 10 years (58.8% men, 40.3% women) had suffered about four years on CHD and had already been treated with coronary efficient drugs. The 14-day therapy with elantan 20 in a dosage of 3 X 1 tabl./day showed a cure rate of 79.9% in patients who had already been treated, a complete remission of the angina pectoris attacks being achieved in 50% and a reduction of the frequency of the attacks in a further 29.9%. The reduced frequency of the attacks was associated with a reduced consumption of acute nitrates (nitroglycerine capsules). With the smaller group of patients who were being treated for angina pectoris for the first time, the therapy with elantan was characterized by a cure rate of 91%.

Nature of the sweat glands in the hairy skin of the beagle.

The local pharmacology, the thermal response and the response to hypothalamic stimulation of sweat glands of the hairy surface of the beagle are described. The results, together with those of electron-microscopic examinations, support the idea that these sweat glands are apocrine and are not directly innervated. No clear relationship with thermoregulation could be found and a pheromonal function is tentatively suggested.
