Propagation of spatially partially coherent emission from a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser.

Recently we observed a strong reduction of spatial coherence of the emission of large-aperture vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers when they are driven by microsecond electrical pulses [Opt. Express 13, 9337 (2005)]. We study the influence of this partial spatial coherence on the propagation characteristics. The spatial decoherence manifests itself in the formation of a Gaussian far-field intensity distribution. We measure the transverse pulse profile from near to far field and see that the shape-invariant far-field regime starts after 140 microm in the pulsed regime as opposed to several centimeters in continuous wave operation. This value matches quantitatively calculations made with a novel partially coherent propagation model without any free fitting parameters.

White LED light coupling into light guides with diffraction gratings.

Radial diffractive gratings are used to couple light of a white LED into a light guide. Theoretical coupling efficiencies are evaluated with rigorous diffraction theory in a pure conical mounting. It is shown that when the refractive index of the grating increases from 1.46 to 2.05 the incoupling efficiency increases from 42% to 63%. Also, with the increasing refractive index the incoupling efficiency is shown to become more nearly uniform over the visible spectrum. Experimental results for the incoupled efficiencies and the color coordinates of the incoupled spectra are introduced for refractive indices n=1.46 and n=1.56.

Electromagnetic field computation in semiconductor laser resonators.

An electromagnetic method based on rigorous diffraction theory of gratings is applied to the analysis of fields in semiconductor laser cavities. The method is based on the Fourier modal method; it is fully rigorous for infinitely periodic resonators and highly accurate for single resonators when absorbing boundary conditions are applied. Fundamental-mode intracavity and near-field distributions are evaluated for some selected geometries, and resonance frequencies are predicted.

Theory of spatially and spectrally partially coherent pulses.

A coherent-mode representation for spatially and spectrally partially coherent pulses is derived both in the space-frequency domain and in the space-time domain. It is shown that both the cross-spectral density and the mutual coherence function of partially coherent pulses can be expressed as a sum of spatially and spectrally and temporally completely coherent modes. The concept of the effective degree of coherence for nonstationary fields is introduced. As an application of the theory, the propagation of Gaussian Schell-model pulsed beams in the space-frequency domain is considered and their coherent-mode representation is presented.

Coupling of light from an LED into a thin light guide by diffractive gratings.

Ring-shaped and radial diffractive gratings are designed with rigorous diffraction theory to couple light of a nearly monochromatic LED into a thin planar light guide on the bottom side. The theoretical coupling efficiencies for ring-shaped and radial gratings are 41% and 66%, respectively. Optimized diffractive elements are manufactured with direct electron-beam lithography and reactive-ion-etching into SiO2 substrates. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical results for selected radial gratings is reached. Furthermore, the mass production tests using injection molding are carried out with good replicability.

Exact self-imaging of transversely periodic fields.

Conditions for exactly self-imaging nonparaxial fields that are periodic also in the transverse direction are introduced. The theory is first derived by assuming full coherence and then extended into the domain of partial coherence. Different types of solutions are discussed, and some illustrations of the existence of solutions and intensity distributions of the fields are presented.

Overall coherence and coherent-mode expansion of spectrally partially coherent plane-wave pulses.

The modal theory for spectrally partially coherent nonstationary plane waves is introduced. The theory is first developed in the space-frequency domain and then extended to the space-time domain. Propagation properties of the coherent modes are analyzed. The concept of the overall degree of coherence is extended to the domain of nonstationary fields, and it is shown that the overall degree of coherence of partially coherent plane-wave pulses is the same in the space-frequency and space-time domains. The theory is applied to the recently introduced concept of spectrally Gaussian Schell-model plane-wave pulses.
