[Role of cytology in the diagnosis of Rhodococcus equi infection].

A 59-year-old HIV-positive man developed necrotizing right-lobe pneumonia with abscess formation. Bronchial aspirates and bronchoalveolar lavage showed numerous inflammatory cells, mainly histiocytes and neutrophils, and intracellular and extracellular Gram- and Ziehl-Nielsen-positive cocci and coccobacilli. Rhodococcus equi was identified. The patient died one week after diagnosis and necropsy confirmed the presence of R. equi nectrotizing pneumonia.

[Cytopathologist's role in detecting and identifying pathogens].

This review highlights the contribution of the cytopathologist in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, with emphasis on the detection and identification of microorganisms in various cytologic specimens. Morphological analysis of the main bacteria, parasites and mycoses observed in cytologic specimens, as well as the cytopathogenic effects of the viruses are discussed. The differential diagnosis (contaminants and exogenous or endogenous foreign bodies) is discussed. Finally, the main pathogens noted in each specimen are briefly reviewed.

[Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the large bowel].

Gastrointestinal tract involvement in Langerhans'cell histiocytosis (LCH) is unusual. It is most often observed in children, is usually asymptomatic, diagnosed at post mortem examination and associated with a disseminated disease. We report 2 cases of LCH large bowel involvement occuring in a 50-year- old man and in a 71-year-old woman, who presented with digestive symptoms. Histiocytic proliferation with reniform nuclei was demonstrated in colonic biopsies it was located in the lamina propria, and dissociating the mucosa glands. Immunohistochemical study revealed a strong positivity of these cells with anti-CD1a and anti-PS100 antibodies. Ultrastructural study performed in one case showed large cells with reniform and indented nuclei, numerous tubuloreticular structures and Birbeck granules. Digestive localization of LCH is exceptional in adult, and may be underestimated.

Nonreplication of the association between ab-ridge count and cerebral structural measures in schizophrenia.

The origins of cerebral abnormalities in psychotic patients remain unknown. Dermatoglyphics are suitable markers of prenatal injury due to their fetal ontogenesis and their susceptibility to some of the factors that also affect cerebral development. In a previous study, positive associations between brain volumetric measures and a dermatoglyphic marker, the ab-ridge count, were reported. The present study is an attempt to replicate that finding in an independent sample. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and dermatoglyphic measures were available for 29 schizophrenia patients (Research Diagnostic Criteria [RDC] criteria) and 26 unrelated healthy controls. The images were processed using an automated procedure, yielding volumes of total grey matter, white matter, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and total brain volume. The ab-ridge count was not positively associated with brain volumes in either patients or controls. The present findings do not support the hypothesis that the changes in brain volume seen in patients with schizophrenia are of prenatal origin.
