Dancing of palladacycles around a "juggler" 2,2-diacetyl-1,1-ethylenedithiolato ligand in a trinuclear Pd(II) complex.

A trinuclear Pd complex containing a mu3-1,1-ethylenedithiolato ligand has been synthesized and its structure confirmed by X-ray crystallography. It is the first example of a 1,1-ethylenedithiolato complex containing an anionic carbon sigma donor. This compound shows an unprecedented fluxional behavior in solution, by which the three palladacycles exchange around the dithiolene. The activation parameters for this process have been derived by NMR line shape analysis, and a mechanism is proposed.

An organometallic compound with Z' = 4: {2-[2-(benzylideneamino)phenyl]-1,2-bis(methoxycarbonyl)ethenyl-kappa2C1,N}iodo(triphenylphosphine-kappaP)palladium(II).

The title compound, [Pd(C19H17NO4)I(C18H15P)], crystallizes with four independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The main difference between the molecules is the disposition of the PPh3 ligand, for which in each molecule one ring is perpendicular to the ligand plane, but may be directed in either direction away from the plane; of the four molecules, two represent each possible direction. The independent molecules are arranged to form a chain parallel to [101] with an approximate translation of (a+c)/4 between successive molecules, excluding the PPh3 rings. This leads to a systematic weakness of the reflections with h + l not equal 4n.

Secondary interactions in two related terphenyl derivatives: 2',5'-dimethyl-p-terphenyl and 2',5'-bis(bromomethyl)-p-terphenyl.

In 2',5'-dimethyl-p-terphenyl, C20H18, which displays pseudosymmetry (the true space group is Pna2(1), but less satisfactory refinement can also be achieved in Pbcn), the molecules are linked into chains by two short C-H...pi interactions to the centroid of the central ring. In 2',5'-bis(bromomethyl)-p-terphenyl, C20H16Br2, the polar CH2Br groups cause molecules to aggregate via C-H...Br and Br...Br interactions, forming a layer structure, in which the phenyl rings project outwards from the central, more polar, region.

Secondary interactions in gold(I) complexes with thione ligands. 5. Two ionic compounds of the form bis(thione)gold(I) bis(4-halobenzenesulfonyl)amide.

Bis(1,3-thiazolidine-2-thione-kappaS2)gold(I) bis(4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl)amide, [Au(C3H5NS2)2](C12H8Cl2NS2O4), has no imposed symmetry. Classical N-H...N and N-H...O hydrogen bonds link the residues to form chains parallel to the b axis. Weaker interactions involve C-H...O, C-H...Au and a number of X...Cl contacts (X = Cl, S or Au) clustered in the region y approximately equal to 1/4}. In bis(1-methylimidazolidine-2-thione-kappaS2)gold(I) bis(4-iodobenzenesulfonyl)amide, [Au(C4H8N2S)2](C12H8I2NS2O4), the Au atom of the cation and the N atom of the anion lie on the twofold axis (0, y, 1/4}) in the space group C2/c. The formula unit forms a self-contained ring with two symmetry-equivalent N-H...O hydrogen bonds, and weak C-H...X (X = O, I or S), Au...I and I...I contacts are observed. In both compounds, the anions display extended conformations.

Phane properties of [2.2]paracyclophane/dehydrobenzoannulene hybrids.

A series of [2.2]paracyclophane/dehydrobenzo[14]annulene (PC/DBA) hybrids (hydrocarbons 5, 6, 9, 10 b, and 10 c), [2.2]paracyclophane/dehydro[14]annulene (PC/DA) hybrids (7 and 8) and suitable model systems (11, 12, and 33) has been synthesized. Comparison of the electronic absorption spectra in each series of compounds provides further insight into the global communication between the decks in the [2.2]paracyclophane unit.

Catena-poly[[(trifluoromethanesulfonato-kappaO)silver(I)]-mu-di-2-pyridylamine-kappa2N2:N2'], a chain polymer with short Ag...C contacts.

The title compound, [Ag(CF3O3S)(C10H9N3)]n, is a chain polymer in which neighbouring monomeric units are related by a glide plane. The silver centre is four-coordinate; the donor atoms are one trifluoromethanesulfonate O atom and one pyridine N atom from each of two symmetry-related dipyridylamines, and an additional and unexpected Ag...C contact [2.6464 (16) A] is observed to a pyridine C atom. The chains are reinforced by one classical N-H...O and two 'weak' C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

Group 11 complexes with the bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methane ligand. How secondary bonds can influence the coordination environment of Ag(I): the role of coordinated water in [Ag2(mu-L)2(OH2)2](OTf)2.

The complexation properties of the ligand bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methane (L) towards group 11 metals have been studied. The reaction in a 1 : 1 molar ratio with [Cu(NCMe)4]PF6 or Ag(OTf) complexes gives the mononuclear [CuL(NCMe)]PF6 (1), with crystallographic mirror symmetry, or dinuclear [Ag2(mu-L)2](OTf)2 (2) (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) in which the ligand bridges both silver centres, an unprecedented mode of coordination for this type of ligands. Compound 2 crystallizes with two water molecules and forms a supramolecular structure through classical hydrogen bonding. The reaction in a 2 : 1 ratio affords in both cases the four-coordinated derivatives [ML2]X (M = Cu, X = PF6 (3); Ag, X = OTf 4). The treatment of [Ag(OTf)(PPh3)] with the ligand L gives [AgL(PPh3)]OTf (5). The gold(I) derivative [Au2(C6F5)2(mu-L)] (6) has also been obtained by reaction of L with two equivalents of [Au(C6F5)(tht)]. These complexes present a luminescent behaviour at low temperature; the emissions being mainly intraligand but enhanced after coordination of the metal. Compounds 1-4 have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. DFT studies showed that, in the silver complex 2, coordination of H2O to Ag in the binuclear complex is favoured by formation of a hydrogen-bonding network, involving the triflato anion, and releasing enough energy to allow distortion of the Ag2 framework.

Synthesis of acetimino complexes of Pt(II) and Pt(IV) and the first heteronuclear mu-acetimido complexes.

The reactions of [Ag(NH=CMe2)2]ClO4 with cis-[PtCl2L2] in a 1:1 molar ratio give cis-[PtCl(NH=CMe2)(PPh3)2]ClO4 (1cis) or cis-[PtCl(NH=CMe2)2(dmso)]ClO4 (2), and in 2:1 molar ratio, they produce [Pt(NH=CMe2)2L2](ClO4)2 [L = PPh3 (3), L2= tbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl (4)]. Complex 2 reacts with PPh3 (1:2) to give trans-[PtCl(NH=CMe2)(PPh3)2]ClO(4) (1trans). The two-step reaction of cis-[PtCl2(dmso)2], [Au(NH=CMe2)(PPh3)]ClO4, and PPh3 (1:1:1) gives [SP-4-3]-[PtCl(NH=CMe2)(dmso)(PPh3)]ClO4 (5). The reactions of complexes 2 and 4 with PhICl2 give the Pt(IV) derivatives [OC-6-13]-[PtCl3(NH=CMe2)(2)(dmso)]ClO4 (6) and [OC-6-13]-[PtCl2(NH=CMe2)2(dtbbpy)](ClO4)2 (7), respectively. Complexes 1cis and 1trans react with NaH and [AuCl(PPh3)] (1:10:1.2) to give cis- and trans-[PtCl{mu-N(AuPPh3)=CMe2}(PPh3)2]ClO4 (8cis and 8trans), respectively. The crystal structures of 4.0.5Et2O.0.5Me2CO and 6 have been determined; both exhibit pseudosymmetry.

Two polymorphs of N,N'-diphenethylterephthalamide.

The title compound, C(24)H(24)N(2)O(2), crystallizes as a triclinic polymorph from dimethylformamide and a monoclinic polymorph from ethanol. In both forms, the molecule displays crystallographic inversion symmetry, and the packing involves translationally related 'ladders' of molecules connected by N-H...O=C hydrogen bonds. Differences between the structures can be rationalized in terms of weak C-H...O contacts. Powder and differential scanning calorimetry investigations of new samples gave no evidence for the triclinic form, and it seems to represent a disappearing polymorph.

Anellated N-heterocyclic carbenes: 1,3-dineopentylnaphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-2-ylidene: synthesis, KOH addition product, transition-metal complexes, and anellation effects.

Two novel anellated N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC), 1,3-dineopentylnaphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-2-ylidene, and 1,3-dineopentyl-2-ylido-imidazolo[4,5-b]pyridine were obtained by reduction of the respective thiones with potassium, the former also by deprotonation of the corresponding naphthimidazolium hexafluorophosphate by using excess KH in THF. The use of equimolar amounts of KH provided an unexpected formal addition product of this NHC with KOH. X-ray crystal structure analysis of the adduct provided evidence for a distorted tetrameric N-heterocyclic alkoxide, stabilized by two THF molecules. In C(6)D(6) the compound undergoes disproportionation. Transition-metal complexes [(NHC)AgCl], [(NHC)Rh(cod)Cl], and (E)-[(NHC)(2)PdCl(2)] of the novel naphthimidazol-2-ylidene were synthesized. X-ray crystal structures and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopic data provided detailed structural information. Comparing characteristic data with those of nonanellated and differently anellated NHCs or their complexes provides information on the influence of the extended anellation.

Study of polarized IR spectra of the hydrogen bond system in crystals of styrylacetic acid.

We have investigated the polarized IR spectra of the hydrogen bond system in crystals of trans-styrylacetic acid C(6)H(5)CHCHCH(2)COOH, and also in crystals of the following three deuterium isotopomers of the compound: C(6)H(5)CHCHCH(2)COOD, C(6)H(5)CHCHCD(2)COOH and C(6)H(5)CHCHCD(2)COOD. The spectra were measured at room temperature and at 77K by a transmission method. The spectral studies were preceded by determination of the X-ray crystal structure. Theoretical analysis of the results concerned linear dichroic effects, the H/D isotopic and temperature effects, observed in the solid-state IR spectra of the hydrogen and of the deuterium bond, at the frequency ranges of the nu(OH) and the nu(OD) bands, respectively. Basic spectral properties of the crystals can be interpreted satisfactorily in terms of the "strong-coupling" theory, when based on a hydrogen bond dimer model. This model sufficiently explained not only a two-branch structure of the nu(OH) and the nu(OD) bands, and temperature-induced evolution of the crystalline spectra, but also the linear dichroic effects observed in the band frequency ranges. A vibronic mechanism was analyzed, responsible for promotion of the symmetry-forbidden transition in the IR for the totally symmetric proton stretching vibrations in centrosymmetric hydrogen bond dimers. It was found to be of minor importance, when compared with analogous spectral properties of arylcarboxylic acid, or of cinnamic acid crystals. These effects were ascribed to a substantial weakening of electronic couplings between the hydrogen bonds of the associated carboxyl groups and the styryl radicals, associated with the separation of these groups in styrylacetic acid molecules by methylene groups in the molecules.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and theoretical studies of gold(I) and gold(I)-gold(III) thiolate complexes: quenching of gold(I) thiolate luminescence.

The gold(I) thiolate complexes [Au(2-SC6H4NH2)(PPh3)] (1), [PPN][Au(2-SC6H4NH2)2] (2) (PPN = PPh3=N=PPh3), and [{Au(2-SC6H4NH2)}2(mu-dppm)] (3) (dppm = PPh2CH2PPh2) have been prepared by reaction of acetylacetonato gold(I) precursors with 2-aminobenzenethiol in the appropriate molar ratio. All products are intensely photoluminescent at 77 K. The molecular structure of the dinuclear derivative 3 displays a gold-gold intramolecular contact of 3.1346(4) A. Further reaction with the organometallic gold(III) complex [Au(C6F5)3(tht)] affords dinuclear or tetranuclear mixed gold(I)-gold(III) derivatives with a thiolate bridge, namely, [(AuPPh3){Au(C6F5)3}(mu2-2-SC6H4NH2)] (4) and [(C6F5)3Au(mu2-2-SC6H4NH2)(AudppmAu)(mu2-2-SC(6)H4NH2)Au(C6F5)3] (5). X-ray diffraction studies of the latter show a shortening of the intramolecular gold(I)-gold(I) contact [2.9353(7) or 2.9332(7) A for a second independent molecule], and short gold(I)-gold(III) distances of 3.2812(7) and 3.3822(7) A [or 3.2923(7) and 3.4052(7) A] are also displayed. Despite the gold-gold interactions, the mixed derivatives are nonemissive compounds. Therefore, the complexes were studied by DFT methods. The HOMOs and LUMOs for gold(I) derivatives 1 and 3 are mainly centered on the thiolate and phosphine (or the second thiolate for complex 2), respectively, with some gold contributions, whereas the LUMO for derivative 4 is more centered on the gold(III) fragment. TD-DFT results show a good agreement with the experimental UV-vis absorption and excitation spectra. The excitations can be assigned as a S --> Au-P charge transfer with some mixture of LLCT for derivative 1, an LLCT mixed with ILCT for derivative 2, and a S --> Au...Au-P charge transfer with LLCT and MC for derivative 3. An LMCT (thiolate --> Au(III) mixed with thiolate --> Au-P) excitation was found for derivative 4. The differing nature of the excited states [participation of the gold(III) fragment and the small contribution of sulfur] is proposed to be responsible for quenching the luminescence.

(Fluoren-9-ylidene)methanedithiolato complexes of platinum: synthesis, reactivity, and luminescence.

Platinum(II) complexes with (fluoren-9-ylidene)methanedithiolato and its 2,7-di-tert-butyl- and 2,7-dimethoxy-substituted analogues were obtained by reacting different chloroplatinum(II) precursors with the piperidinium dithioates (pipH)[(2,7-R2C12H6)CHCS2] [R = H (1a), t-Bu (1b), or OMe (1c)] in the presence of piperidine. The anionic complexes Q2[Pt{S(2)C=C(C12H6R(2)-2,7)}2] [R = H, (Pr(4)N)(2)2a; R = t-Bu, (Pr4N)(2)2b, (Et4N)(2)2b; R = OMe, (Pr4N)(2)2c] were prepared from PtCl(2), piperidine, the corresponding QCl salt, and 1a-c in molar ratio 1:2:2:2. In the absence of QCl, the complexes (pipH)(2)2b and [Pt(pip)(4)]2b were isolated depending on the PtCl(2):pip molar ratio. The neutral complexes [Pt{S2C=C(C12H6R(2)-2,7)L(2)] [L = PPh(3), R = H (3a), t-Bu (3b), OMe (3c); L = PEt(3), R = H (4a), t-Bu (4b), OMe (4c); L(2) = dbbpy, R = H (5a), t-Bu (5b), OMe (5c) (dbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridyl)] were similarly prepared from the corresponding precursors [PtCl2L2] and 1a-c in the presence of piperidine. Oxidation of Q(2)2b with [FeCp2]PF6 afforded the mixed Pt(II)-Pt(IV) complex Q2[Pt2{S2C=C[C12H6(t-Bu)(2)-2,7]}4] (Q(2)6, Q = Et4N+, Pr4N+). The protonation of (Pr4N)(2)2b with 2 equiv of triflic acid gave the neutral dithioato complex [Pt2{S2CCH[C12H6(t-Bu)(2)-2,7]}4] (7). The same reaction in 1:1 molar ratio gave the mixed dithiolato/dithioato complex Pr4N[Pt{S2C=C[C12H6(t-Bu)(2)-2,7]}{S2CCH[C12H6(t-Bu)(2)-2,7]}] (Pr(4)N8) while the corresponding DMANH+ salt was obtained by treating 7 with 2 equiv of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN). The crystal structures of 3b and 5c.CH2Cl2 have been solved by X-ray crystallography. All the platinum complexes are photoluminescent at 77 K in CH2Cl2 or KBr matrix, except for Q(2)6. Compounds 5a-c and Q8 show room-temperature luminescence in fluid solution. The electronic absorption and emission spectra of the dithiolato complexes reveal charge-transfer absorption and emission energies which are significantly lower than those of analogous platinum complexes with previously described 1,1-ethylenedithiolato ligands and in most cases compare well to those of 1,2-dithiolene complexes.

Group 11 complexes with unsymmetrical P,S and P,Se disubstituted ferrocene ligands.

The reaction of the unsymmetrical ligands 1-diphenylphosphino-1'-(phenylsulfanyl)ferrocene and 1-diphenylphosphino-1'-(phenylselenyl)ferrocene, Fc(EPh)PPh2(E = S, Se), with several group 11 metal derivatives leads to the synthesis of complexes of the type [MX{Fc(EPh)PPh2}](M = Au, X = Cl, C6F5; M = Ag, X = OTf), (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate), [M{Fc(EPh)PPh2}2]X (M = Au, X = ClO4; M = Ag, X = OTf), [M(PPh3){Fc(EPh)PPh2}]OTf (M = Au, Ag), [Au2{Fc(SPh)PPh2}2](ClO4)2, [Au(C6F5)2{Fc(SePh)PPh2}]ClO4, [Au(C6F5)3{Fc(EPh)PPh2}], [Au2(C6F5)6{Fc(SePh)PPh2}] or [Cu{Fc(EPh)PPh2}2]PF6(E = S, Se). In these complexes coordination depends upon the metal centre; with gold it takes place predominantly to the phosphorus atom and with silver and copper to both phosphorus and chalcogen atoms. The treatment of some of the gold complexes with other metal centres affords heterometallic derivatives that in some cases are in equilibrium with the homometallic derivatives. Several compounds have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, four pairs of homologous compounds, yet not a single pair is isotypic. In many of them a three dimensional network is formed through secondary bonds such as hydrogen bonds, Au...Cl or Au...Se interactions. The complex [Ag(OTf){Fc(SePh)PPh2}] forms one-dimensional chains through trifluoromethanesulfonate bridging ligands.

Molecular recognition of carbohydrates with artificial receptors: mimicking the binding motifs found in the crystal structures of protein-carbohydrate complexes.

The binding motifs found in the crystal structures of protein-carbohydrate complexes have been successfully mimicked with simple acyclic pyridine- and pyrimidine-based receptors. A full discussion of the recognition motifs observed in the crystal structures of complexes of receptors 1 and 3 with glucopyranosides 4a and 4b is provided. A remarkable similarity of these motifs to those observed in the crystal structures of sugar-binding proteins and those found by molecular modeling is shown. In addition, the recognition properties of the new pyrimidine receptor 3 toward monosaccharides 4-6 are described. This molecule has been established as a highly effective receptor for beta-glucopyranosides.
