A new series of pyrimidine-containing linear molecules: their elegant crystal structures and intriguing photophysical properties.

A new series of aza-substituted analogues 3-5 based on the 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene moiety have been synthesized by the selective Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction from 5-bromo-2-iodopyrimidine (1). In these linear molecules, the dipolar pyrimidine moiety is introduced as a probe to investigate factors that control the intermolecular interactions over the crystal engineering. The results reveal that the manner of packing changes both dipolar interactions between linear pyrimidine-containing molecules and transition moments simultaneously, resulting in remarkably different photophysical properties. Due to their versatile dipole-dipole and face-to-face pi-piinteractions in a crystal motif, further applications on the design of ordered crystalline materials for the field effect transistors are promising.

Structural characterization and luminescence behavior of a silver(I) 1D polymeric chain constructed via a Bridge with unusual 4,5-diazospirobifluorene and perchlorate.

A new polymeric silver complex, [Ag(2)(L(2))(ClO(4))(2)] (L = 4,5-diazospirobifluorene), has been synthesized and shown to exhibit interesting luminescence properties in a single crystal. Structural analysis reveals a one-dimensional chain, which contains a [Ag(2)(L(2))](2+) dimer bridged with ClO(4)(-). The Ag...Ag distances are 2.776(1) and 4.575(1) A incorporated by two L ligands and by a ClO(4)(-) bridge, respectively.

Synthesis of photo-luminescent Zn(II) Schiff base complexes and its derivative containing Pd(II) moiety.

An efficient method was developed for the preparation of a series of zinc Schiff base complexes. Introduction of a pyridyl group as a bridging unit as well as incorporation of ethynyl and electron-donating groups into the salicylidene moiety of these complexes moderately enhances the photoluminescence intensity and quantum yield. Electron-rich palladium groups possibly influence the photophysical character through the bridging C[triple bond]C bond. The crystal structure of the pyridine adduct of a salen Zn complex is determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Fluorescent and circular dichroic detection of monosaccharides by molecular sensors: bis[(pyrrolyl)ethynyl]naphthyridine and bis[(indolyl)ethynyl]naphthyridine.

The push-pull conjugated molecules 2,7-bis-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethynyl-1,8-naphthyridine (BPN) and 2,7-bis(1H-indol-2-yl)ethynyl-1,8-naphthyridine (BIN) adopting daad relays of proton donors (d) and acceptors (a) form multiple hydrogen-bonding complexes with various monosaccharides that possess complementary adda sequences. Although the free BPN emits blue light at lambda(max) = 475 nm in CH(2)Cl(2), its complexation with octyl beta-d-glucopyranoside gives green fluorescence at lambda(max) = 535 nm. The excellent photophysical properties make BPN a highly sensitive probe for monitoring glucopyranoside to a detection limit of approximately 100 pM. On the other hand, the CD-silent BIN molecule binds with monosaccharides to form the CD-active multiple hydrogen-bonding complexes, which exhibit the remarkable chirality dependent helicities consistent with the prediction by the ab initio approaches. On the basis of the similar daad cleft and hence the binding property, the fluorescence and CD absorption methods in BPN and BIN, respectively, are complementary, which, in combination with computational molecular modeling, not only give a detailed insight into the structures of the receptor-saccharide complexes in solution, but also differentiate octyl beta-d-glucopyranoside from its enantiomer and other monosaccharides.

Multiple hydrogen bonds tuning guest/host excited-state proton transfer reaction: its application in molecular recognition.

A molecular recognition concept exploiting multiple-hydrogen-bond fine-tuned excited-state proton-transfer (ESPT) was conveyed using 3,4,5,6-tetrahydrobis(pyrido[3,2-g]indolo)[2,3-a:3',2'-j]acridine (1a). The catalytic type 1a/carboxylic acids hydrogen-bonding (HB) complexes undergo ultrafast ESPT, resulting in an anomalously large Stokes shifted tautomer emission (lambdamax approximately 600 nm). Albeit forming a quadruple HB complex, ESPT is prohibited in the noncatalytic-type 1a/urea complexes (lambdamax approximately 430 nm). The HB configuration tuning ESPT properties lead to a feasible design for sensing multiple-HB-site analytes of biological interest.

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in five-membered hydrogen-bonding systems: 2-pyridyl pyrazoles.

The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction in five-membered N-H...N hydrogen-bonding systems has been explored through design and syntheses of a series of 5-(2-pyridyl) 1-H-pyrazoles 1a-d. The ESIPT mechanism was confirmed through spectroscopy, relaxation dynamics, and corresponding methylated analogues. The results demonstrate for the first time a unique system among ESIPT molecules, in which ESIPT incorporates an appreciably large energy barrier fine-tuned by the skeletal reorganization. This makes 1a-d systems ideal models for probing the reaction potential energy surface.

8-(1,4,7,10-Tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadec-13-ylmethyl)quinolin-7-ol: synthesis and application as a highly sensitive metal cation probe.

A new metal ion probe 8-(1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadec-13-ylmethyl)quinolin-7-ol (1a) was synthesized via a modified Mannich reaction, in which the mechanism of recognition incorporates excited-state proton transfer reactions. The remarkable differentiation in spectral properties upon metal complexation makes 1a a highly sensitive fluorescence probe.

2,7-Bis(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethynyl-1,8-naphthyridine: an ultrasensitive fluorescent probe for glucopyranoside.

[structure: see text] A push-pull conjugated molecule, 2,7-bis(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethynyl-1,8-naphthyridine (BPN), has been designed to bind selectively with octyl glucopyranoside (OGU). The BPN/OGU quadruple hydrogen-bonding complex adopts a rigid BPN conformation in which the proton donor (d) and acceptor (a) relays (daad) are resonantly conjugated through the ethynyl bridge, inducing pi-electron delocalization, i.e., a charge transfer effect. The excellent photophysical properties make BPN a highly sensitive probe for monitoring glucopyranoside to a detection limit of approximately 100 pM.

Self-complementarity of oligo-2-aminopyridines: a new class of hydrogen-bonded ladders.

A new class of hydrogen-bonded ladders based on hydrogen-bonded dimerization of oligo-alpha-aminopryidines has been demonstrated. Jorgensen's model can be successfully applied to this hydrogen-bonding system in nonpolar solvents. The results show the competitive enthalpy/entropy compensation relationship upon dimerization. Although increasing the number of hydrogen-bonding interactions would enhance the hydrogen-bonding stabilization enthalpy, this stabilization enthalpy per unit would be partially sacrificed to compensate for the entropy loss due to dimerization. These results clearly support the importance of preorganization in designing hydrogen-bonding guest-host molecules.
