Effect of cyanato, azido, carboxylato, and carbonato ligands on the formation of cobalt(II) polyoxometalates: characterization, magnetic, and electrochemical studies of multinuclear cobalt clusters.

Five Co(II) silicotungstate complexes are reported. The centrosymmetric heptanuclear compound K(20)[{(B-beta-SiW(9)O(33)(OH))(beta-SiW(8)O(29)(OH)(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)}(2)Co(H(2)O)(2)]47 H(2)O (1) consists of two {(B-beta-SiW(9)O(33)(OH))(beta-SiW(8)O(29)(OH)(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)} units connected by a {CoO(4)(H(2)O)(2)} group. In the chiral species K(7)[Co(1.5)(H(2)O)(7))][(gamma-SiW(10)O(36))(beta-SiW(8)O(30)(OH))Co(4)(OH)(H(2)O)(7)]36 H(2)O (2), a {gamma-SiW(10)O(36)} and a {beta-SiW(8)O(30)(OH)} unit enclose a mononuclear {CoO(4)(H(2)O)(2)} group and a {Co(3)O(7)(OH)(H(2)O)(5)} fragment. The two trinuclear Co(II) clusters present in 1 enclose a mu(4)-O atom, while in 2 a mu(3)-OH bridging group connects the three paramagnetic centers of the trinuclear unit, inducing significantly larger Co-L-Co (L=mu(4)-O (1), mu(3)-OH (2)) bridging angles in 2 (theta(av(Co-L-Co))=99.1 degrees ) than in 1 (theta(av(Co-L-Co))=92.8 degrees ). Weaker ferromagnetic interactions were found in 2 than in 1, in agreement with larger Co-L-Co angles in 2. The electrochemistry of 1 was studied in detail. The two chemically reversible redox couples observed in the positive potential domain were attributed to the redox processes of Co(II) centers, and indicated that two types of Co(II) centers in the structure were oxidized in separate waves. Redox activity of the seventh Co(II) center was not detected. Preliminary experiments indicated that 1 catalyzes the reduction of nitrite and NO. Remarkably, a reversible interaction exists with NO or related species. The hybrid tetranuclear complexes K(5)Na(3)[(A-alpha-SiW(9)O(34))Co(4)(OH)(3)(CH(3)COO)(3)]18 H(2)O (3) and K(5)Na(3)[(A-alpha-SiW(9)O(34))Co(4)(OH)(N(3))(2)(CH(3)COO)(3)]18 H(2)O (4) were characterized: in both, a tetrahedral {Co(4)(L(1))(L(2))(2)(CH(3)COO)(3)} (3: L(1)=L(2)=OH; 4: L(1)=OH, L(2)=N(3)) unit capped the [A-alpha-SiW(9)O(34)](10-) trivacant polyanion. The octanuclear complex K(8)Na(8)[(A-alpha-SiW(9)O(34))(2)Co(8)(OH)(6)(H(2)O)(2)(CO(3))(3)]52 H(2)O (5), containing two {Co(4)O(9)(OH)(3)(H(2)O)} units, was also obtained. Compounds 2, 3, 4, and 5 were less stable than 1, but their partial electrochemical characterization was possible; the electronic effect expected for 3 and 4 was observed.

Synthesis and characterizations of cyclic octanuclear mixed-valence vanadium(IV,V) clusters with polyoxometalate counterions.

Hydrothermal reaction of Na2WO4, VOSO4, 2,2'-bpy and H3PO4 has afforded in high yield the compound [V(IV)2V(V)6O14(bpy)8(PO4)2][PW11V(V)O40](bpy).12H2O (1). Compound 1 contains a novel octanuclear mixed valence V(IV,V) cluster, [V(IV)2V(V)6O14(bpy)8(PO4)2]4+, with [PW11V(V)O40]4- as counterion. In the vanadium cluster, four V(V) centers are localized and the remaining two V(IV) and two V(V) ions are disordered over four crystallographically equivalent positions. The isostructural compound [V(IV)2V(V)6O14(bpy)8(PO4)2][PMo11V(V)O40](bpy).3H2O (2) has also been synthesized. Thermodiffractometry experiments indicate that 2 is stable up to 360 degrees C. Redox activities for both the vanadium and molybdenum centers have been observed by solid-state electrochemical measurements performed on mechanically attached microparticles of 2. Magnetic measurements performed on have shown the occurrence of weak ferromagnetic interactions between the V(IV) centres (J = +0.34 cm(-1), H(ex) = -JS1 x S2), and combined with DFT calculations, have allowed to propose a localization of the two V(IV) centers on two of the four equivalent crystallographic sites. Finally high field electron paramagnetic resonance has evidenced the magnetic axial anisotropy of the paramagnetic centers (g(x) = g(y) = 1.975(3); g(z) = 1.939(4)).

Structure and magnetic properties of a non-heme diiron complex singly bridged by a hydroxo group.

The synthesis of the first singly bridged non-heme diiron complex with a mu-hydroxo bridging ligand, [{(salten)Fe}2(OH)][B(C6H5)4].(CH3CN)x.(H2O)y (1) [H2salten = 4-azaheptane-1,7-bis(salicylideneiminate)], is reported. The complex has been characterized with X-ray crystallography, FTIR, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The data have been compared with the results of DFT calculations on both 1 and a model with an unsupported mu-oxo bridge (2) to verify the formulation of the complex as a mu-hydroxo-bridged species. The X-ray structure [Fe-O(H) = 1.997(1) A and Fe-O(H)-Fe = 159 degrees ] is consistent with the DFT-optimized geometry of 1 [Fe-O(H) = 2.02 A and Fe-O(H)-Fe = 151 degrees ]; the Fe-O(H) distance in 1 is about 0.2 A longer than the Fe-O separations in the optimized geometry of 2 (1.84 A) and in the crystallographic structures of diiron(III) compounds with unsupported mu-oxo bridges (1.77-1.81 A). The formulation of 1 as a hydroxo-bridged compound is also supported by the presence of an O-H stretch band in the FTIR spectrum of the complex. The magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 reveal antiferromagnetic exchange (J = 42 cm(-1) and H(ex) = JS(1).S(2)). Nearly the same J value is obtained by analyzing the temperature dependence of the Mössbauer spectra (J = 43 cm(-1); other parameters: delta = 0.49 mm s(-1), DeltaE(Q) = -0.97 mm s(-1), and eta = 0.45 at 4.2 K). The experimental J values and Mössbauer parameters agree very well with those obtained from DFT calculations for the mu-hydroxo-bridged compound (J = 46 cm(-1), delta = 0.48 mm s(-1), DeltaE(Q) = -1.09 mm s(-1), and eta = 0.35). The exchange coupling constant in 1 is distinctly different from the value J approximately 200 cm(-1) calculated for the optimized mu-oxo-bridged species, 2. The increased exchange-coupling in 2 arises primarily from a decrease in the Fe-O bond length.

Synthesis and characterization of octa- and hexanuclear polyoxomolybdate wheels: role of the inorganic template and of the counterion.

Eight new compounds based on [O3PCH2PO3]4- ligands and {MoV2O4} dimeric units have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Octanuclear wheels encapsulating various guests have been isolated with different counterions. With NH4+, a single wheel was obtained, as expected, with the planar CO32- guest, (NH4)12[(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(CO3)2].24H2O (1a), while with the pyramidal SO32- guest, only the syn isomer (NH4)12[(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(SO3)2].26H2O (2a) was characterized. The corresponding anti isomer was obtained with Na+ as counterions, Na12[(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(SO3)2]39H2O (2b), and with mixed Na+ and NH4(+) counterions, Na+(NH4)11[(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(SO3)2].13H2O (2d). With [O3PCH2PO3]4- extra ligands, the octanuclear wheel Li12(NH4)2[(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(HO3PCH2PO3)2].31H2O (4a) was isolated with Li+ and NH4+ counterions and Li14[(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(HO3PCH2PO3)2].34H2O (4c) as a pure Li+ salt. A new rectangular anion, formed by connecting two MoV dimers and two MoVI octahedra via methylenediphosphonato ligands with NH4+ as counterions, (NH4)10[(MoV2O4)2(MoVIO3)2(O3PCH2PO3)2(HO3PCH2PO3)2].15H2)O (3a), and Li9(NH4)2Cl[(MoV2O4)2(MoVIO3)2(O3PCH2PO3)2]. 22H2O (3d) as a mixed NH4+ and Li+ salt have also been synthesized. The structural characterization of the compounds, combined with a study of their behavior in solution, investigated by 31P NMR, has allowed a discussion on the influence of the counterions on the structure of the anions and their stability. Density functional theory calculations carried out on both isomers of the [(MoV2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(SO3)2]12- anion (2), either assumed isolated or embedded in a continuum solvent model, suggest that the anti form is favored by approximately 2 kcal mol(-1). Explicit insertion of two solvated counterions in the molecular cavity reverses this energy difference and reduces it to less than 1 kcal mol(-1), therefore accounting for the observed structural versatility.

Functionalization of polyoxometalates by carboxylato and azido ligands: macromolecular complexes and extended compounds.

Polyoxometalate compounds continue to be widely studied due to their relevance in various fields such as catalysis or magnetochemistry. In this article, we will focus on two topics we recently developed, the functionalization of rare earth polyoxometalates by organic ligands, which has led to compounds ranging from magnetic macromolecular complexes to a 3D open-framework system, and the functionalization of first row transition metal substituted polyoxometalates by azido ligands, which has allowed the isolation of complexes exhibiting the largest ferromagnetic exchange couplings observed to date in polyoxometalate chemistry.

Structural and magnetic properties of Mn(III) and Cu(II) tetranuclear azido polyoxometalate complexes: multifrequency high-field EPR spectroscopy of Cu4 clusters with S = 1 and S = 2 ground states.

Two new azido-bridged polyoxometalate compounds were synthesized in acetonitrile/methanol media and their molecular structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The [[(gamma-SiW10O36)Mn2(OH)2(N3)(0.5)(H2O)(0.5)]2(mu-1,3-N3)](10-) (1 a) tetranuclear Mn(III) complex, in which an end-to-end N3- ligand acts as a linker between two [(gamma-SiW10O36)Mn2(OH)2]4- units, represents the first manganese-azido polyoxometalate. The magnetic properties have been studied considering the spin Hamiltonian H = -J1(S1S2+S1*S2*)-J2(S1S1*), showing that antiferromagnetic interactions between the paramagnetic centers (g = 1.98) occur both through the di-(mu-OH) bridge (J1 = -25.5 cm(-1)) and the mu-1,3-azido bridge (J2 = -19.6 cm(-1)). The [(gamma-SiW10O36)2Cu4(mu-1,1,1-N3)2(mu-1,1-N3)2]12- (2 a) tetranuclear Cu(II) complex consists of two [gamma-SiW10O36Cu2(N3)2]6- subunits connected through the two mu-1,1,1-azido ligands, the four paramagnetic centers forming a lozenge. The magnetic susceptibility data have been fitted. This reveals ferromagnetic interactions between the four Cu(II) centers, leading to an S=2 ground state (H = -J1(S1S2+S1*S2*)-J2(S2S2*), J1 = +294.5 cm(-1), J2 = +1.6 cm(-1), g = 2.085). The ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) centers in each subunit is the strongest ever observed either in a polyoxometalate compound or in a diazido-bridged Cu(II) complex. Considering complex 2 a and the previously reported basal-basal di-(mu-1,1-N3)-bridged Cu(II) complexes in which the metallic centers are not connected by other magnetically coupling ligands, the linear correlation J1 = 2639.5-24.95*theta(av) between the theta(av) bridging angle and the J1 coupling parameter has been proposed. The electronic structure of complex 2 a has also been investigated by using multifrequency high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) spectroscopy between 95 and 285 GHz. The spin Hamiltonian parameters of the S = 2 ground state (D = -0.135(2) cm(-1), E = -0.003(2) cm(-1), g(x) = 2.290(5), g(y) = 2.135(10), g(z) = 2.158(5)) as well as of the first excited spin state S = 1 (D = -0.960(4) cm(-1), E = -0.080(5) cm(-1), g(x) = 2.042(5), g(y) = 2.335(5), g(z) = 2.095(5)) have been determined, since the energy gap between these two spin states is very small (1.6 cm(-1)).

Molecular and multidimensional polyoxotungstates functionalized by {Cu(bpy)}2+ groups.

Five new materials built from polyoxotungstates and Cu(ii) ions as linkers have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions from a mixture of sodium tungstate, copper chloride and bipyridine. The value of the initial pH, the nature of the heteroelement (P or Si) and of the ligand (2,2'- and/or 4,4'-bipyridine) permit the control of the nature of the polyoxotungstate clusters and their connectivity via the copper ions, and hence the dimensionality of the framework. A single phase has been obtained with silicon as heteroelement at an initial pH of 5, namely the 2D material [SiW(12)O(40)][Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2)](2).10H(2)O (1) with saturated Keggin polyoxotungstates linked by {Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2)}(2+) groups. With phosphorous as heteroelement and at the same initial pH, three different structures have been isolated according to the nature of the ligand. Indeed, the two 1D materials [{Cu(5)(2,2'-bpy)(5)(H(2)O)(HPO(4))(PO(4))}PW(11)CuO(39)].6H(2)O (2) with 2,2'-bpy and [4,4'-Hbpy][{Cu(2)(2,2'-bpy)(2)(4,4'-bpy)(2.5)}PW(11)CuO(39)].16H(2)O (3) with a mixture of 2,2'- and 4,4'-bpy have been characterized, and a coordination polymer with polyoxometalate guests Na(3)[4,4'-Hbpy]{Cu(4)(4,4'-bpy)(8)(H(2)O)(8)}[PW(11)CuO(39)(H(2)O)][PW(10)Cu(2)O(38)(H(2)O)(2)].38H(2)O (4) with 4,4'-bpy has been obtained. Finally, in basic medium (pH = 10) the unprecedented molecular cluster Na(2)[{Cu(8)(2,2'-bpy)(8)}(PW(8)O(31))(2)].15H(2)O (5) has been evidenced. Magnetic studies of compound 2 revealed that the predominant interactions involve only 4 paramagnetic centers, which are interacting within pairs, among the 6 Cu(ii) centers. The chi(M)T=f(T) curve can be fitted using the dinuclear expression appropriate to the HDVV isotropic exchange Hamiltonian H=-JS(1)xS(2), with S(1)=S(2)=(1/2) and J=-105.4 cm(-1), showing strong antiferromagnetic interactions within the two Cu(ii) pairs.

A nonanuclear copper(II) polyoxometalate assembled around a mu-1,1,1,3,3,3-azido ligand and its parent tetranuclear complex.

Reaction of Cu(II), [gamma-SiW10O36]8-, and N3- affords three azido polyoxotungstate complexes. Two of them have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex KNaCs10[{gamma-SiW10O36Cu2(H2O)(N3)2}2].26H2O (1) is obtained as crystals in few hours after addition of CsCl. This linear tetranuclear Cu(II) complex consists in two [gamma-SiW10O36Cu2(H2O)(N3)2]6- units connected through two W=O bridges. When the filtrate is left to stand for one night, a new complex is obtained. From both elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy, it has been postulated that this compound could be formulated K(1.5)Cs(5.5)[SiW10O37Cu2(H2O)2(N3)].14 H2O (1 a), showing the loss of one azido ligand per polyoxometalate unit. Finally, when no cesium salt is added to the reaction medium, the nonanuclear complex K12Na7[{SiW8O31Cu3(OH)(H2O)2(N3)}3(N3)].24 H2O (2) is obtained after three days. Compound 2 crystallizes in the R3c space group and consists in three {Cu3} units related by a C3 axis passing through the exceptional mu-1,1,1,3,3,3-azido bridging ligand. Each trinuclear Cu(II) unit is embedded in the [gamma-SiW8O31]10- ligand, an unprecedented tetravacant polyoxometalate, showing that partial decomposition of the [gamma-SiW10O36]8- precursor occurs with time in such experimental conditions. Magnetically, complex 1 behaves as two isolated {Cu2(mu(1,1)-N3)2} pairs in which the metal centers are strongly ferromagnetically coupled (J = +224 cm(-1), g = 2.20), the coupling through the W=O bridges being negligible. The magnetic behavior of complex 2 has also been studied. Relatively weak ferromagnetic couplings (J1 = +1.0 cm(-1), J2 = +20.0 cm(-1), g=2.17) have been found inside the {Cu3} units, while the intertrimeric magnetic interactions occurring through the hexadentate azido ligand have been found to be antiferromagnetic (J3 = -5.4 cm(-1)) and ferromagnetic (J4 = +1.3 cm(-1)) with respect to the end-to-end and end-on azido-bridged Cu(II) pairs, respectively.

Template synthesis of [(Mo(V)2O4)(O3PCH2PO3)]n clusters (n = 3, 4, 10): solid state and solution studies.

The influence of three exogenous ligands (acetate, formate and carbonate) on the condensation process of the [Mo2O4]2+ dioxocation with the [O3PCH2PO3](4-) group has been investigated. Four cyclic or bicyclic compounds have been isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. Two closely related acetato and formato ovoidal duodecanuclear compounds, Na24[Na4(H2O)6[(Mo2O4)10(O3PCH2PO3)10(CH3COO)8(H2O)4]].103H2O (1) and Na28[Na2[(Mo2O4)10(O3PCH2PO3)10(HCOO)10]].110H2O (2), respectively, have been obtained. Their structures can be described as two interconnected nonequivalent wheels, delimiting a large cavity. When the condensation is performed in similar conditions but replacing carboxylato groups by carbonato ligands, the ellipsoidal octanuclear Na11[Na(H2O)2[(Mo2O4)4(O3PCH2PO3)4(CO3)2]].70H2O (3) compound is isolated. 31P NMR spectroscopic studies have shown that complexes 1 and 3 are stable in solution at room temperature. Nevertheless, on heating an aqueous solution of 3, the Na8[(Mo2O4)3(O3PCH2PO3)3(MoO4)].18H2O (4) complex, free of carbonato groups, is obtained. 4 is a hexanuclear Mo(V) wheel encapsulating a tetrahedral [Mo(VI)O4](2-) anion. Its rational synthesis using a controlled Mo(V)/Mo(VI) ratio is also presented.

Hybrid organic-inorganic 1D and 2D frameworks with epsilon-Keggin polyoxomolybdates as building blocks.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on polyoxometalate building blocks with capping La3+ ions and bidentate oxygenated ligands have been obtained by reaction at room temperature of the [epsilon-PMo12O36(OH)4[La(H2O)4]]5+ polyoxocation with glutarate (C5H6O(2)(2-)) and squarate (C4O(4)(2-)) organic ligands. [epsilon-PMo12O37(OH)3[La(H2O)4(C5H6O4)0.5]4].21 H2O (1) and [epsilon-PMo12O39(OH)[La(H2O)6]2-[La(H2O)5(C4O4)0.5]2].17 H2O (2) form unprecedented 1D chains built from alternating polyoxocations and organic ligands connected through LaO links. The structures of these materials are compared to the 2D hybrid organic-inorganic framework [NC4H12]2-[Mo22O52(OH)18[La(H2O)4]2[La(CH3CO2)2]4].8H2O (3) isolated from the hydrothermal reaction of elemental precursors (MoO(4)(2-), Mo, La3+) in acetate buffer. Compound 3 is built from previously undescribed polyoxometalate units with twenty-two MoV centers capped by six La3+ ions, four of which are bridged by acetate ligands.

Solid-State and solution studies of [Ln(n)(SiW11O39)] polyoxoanions: an example of building block condensation dependent on the nature of the rare earth.

The reactivity of the [alpha-SiW(11)O(39)](8-) monovacant polyoxometalate with lanthanide has been investigated for four different trivalent rare-earth cations (Ln = Nd(III), Eu(III), Gd(III), Yb(III)). The crystal structures of KCs(4)[Yb(alpha-SiW(11)O(39))(H(2)O)(2)] x 24H(2)O (1), K(0.5)Nd(0.5)[Nd(2)(alpha-SiW(11)O(39))(H(2)O)(11)] x 17H(2)O (2a), and Na(0.5)Cs(4.5)[Eu(alpha-SiW(11)O(39))(H(2)O)(2)] x 23H(2)O (3a) are reported. The solid-state structure of compound 1 consists of linear wires built up of [alpha-SiW(11)O(39)](8-) anions connected by Yb(3+) cations, while the linkage of the building blocks by Eu(3+) centers in 3a leads to the formation of zigzag chains. In 2a, dimeric [Nd(2)(alpha-SiW(11)O(39))(2)(H(2)O)(8)](10-) entities are linked by four Nd(3+) cations. The resulting chains are connected by lanthanide ions, leading to a bidimensional arrangement. Thus, the dimensionality, the organization of the polyoxometalate building units, and the Ln/[alpha-SiW(11)O(39)](8-) ratio in the solid state can be tuned by choosing the appropriate lanthanide. The luminescent properties of compound 3a have been studied, showing that, in solution, the polymer decomposes to give the monomeric complex [Eu(alpha-SiW(11)O(39))(H(2)O)(4)](5-). The lability of the four exogenous ligands connected to the rare earth must allow the functionalization of this lanthanide polyanion.

A new two-dimensional molybdenum(V) nickel phosphate built up of [H18(Mo16O32)Ni16(PO4)26(OH)6(H2O)8]18- wheels.

The new molybdenum(V) nickel phosphate Na(6)Ni(6)[(Mo(2)O(4))(8)Ni(16)(H(2)PO(4))(4)(HPO(4))(10)(PO(4))(12)(OH)(6)(H(2)O)(8)].66H(2)O (1) was synthesized hydrothermally. The structure (orthorhombic, space group Cccm; a = 23.999(4), b = 36.595(6), c = 20.445(4) A) was solved from single-crystal data. The framework structure of 1 consists of anionic inorganic sheets formed by the linkages of large polyoxomolybdate rings via nickel(II) octahedra. Charge-compensating sodium atoms are interleaved between the sheets. Magnetic studies of compound 1 revealed that among the 22 nickel(II) centers, 10 are interacting. The chi(M)T = f(T) curve can be fitted using the dinuclear expression appropriate to the HDVV isotropic exchange Hamiltonian H = -2JS(1).S(2), with S(1) = S(2) = 1 and J = -24.1 cm(-)(1), showing that nickel is antiferromagnetically coupled within Ni(2) pairs.

Structures of Fe(II) Complexes with N,N,N'-Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine Type Ligands. Bleomycin-like DNA Cleavage and Enhancement by an Alkylammonium Substituent on the N' Atom of the Ligand.

The complexes [L(5)Fe(II)Cl]BPh(4) and [L(5)Fe(II)(H(2)O)](BPh(4))(2) (L(5) = N,N,N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)-N'-methyl-ethane-1,2-diamine) have been isolated. Bernal et al. (Bernal, J.; et al. J. Chem. Soc., Dalton Trans. 1995, 3667-3675) have prepared this ligand and the corresponding complex [L(5)Fe(II)Cl]PF(6). We obtained the structural data of [L(5)Fe(II)Cl]BPh(4) by X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 17.645(7) Å, b = 16.077(6) Å, c = 13.934(5) Å, V = 3953(3) Å(3), and Z = 4. It presents Fe(II)-N bond lengths close to 2.2 Å, typical of high-spin Fe(II). In solution the [L(5)Fe(II)(H(2)O)](BPh(4))(2) complex showed a dependence of spin state upon the nature of the solvent. It was high spin in acetone and changed to low spin in acetonitrile. This was detected by UV-vis spectroscopy and by (1)H NMR. Bernal et al. (ibidem) showed that these complexes in the presence of an excess of H(2)O(2) give a purple species, very likely the [L(5)Fe(III)(OOH)](2+) derivative, with spectroscopic signatures analogous to those of "activated bleomycin". The formation of [L(5)Fe(III)(OOH)](2+) is confirmed here by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. We found that a L(5)/Fe system gave single-strand breaks on plasmid DNA in the presence of either a reducing agent (ascorbate) and air or oxidants (H(2)O(2), KHSO(5), MMPP) at 0.1 &mgr;M concentration. The methyl group in L(5) was substituted by a (CH(2))(5)N(CH(3))(3)(+) group in order to get higher affinity with DNA. The corresponding ligand L(5)(+) was used to prepare the complexes [L(5)(+)Fe(II)Cl]Y(2) (Y = BPh(4)(-), PF(6)(-), ClO(4)(-)) and [L(5)(+)Fe(II)Br](PF(6))(2). The crystal structure of [L(5)(+)Fe(II)Cl](ClO(4))(2) was solved. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with a = 14.691(2) Å, b = 13.545(2) Å, c = 17.430(2) Å, beta = 93.43(1) degrees, V = 3462(1) Å(3), and Z = 4. The Fe(II)-ligand distances are similar to those of [L(5)Fe(II)Cl]BPh(4). At the relatively low concentration of 0.01 &mgr;M, [L(5)(+)Fe(II)Br](2+) promoted DNA breaks. The reaction was not inhibited by hydroxyl radical scavengers. The reaction might involve a nondiffusible oxygen reactive species, either a coordinated hydroperoxide or a high-valent metal-oxo entity.
