Lanthanide(III)/actinide(III) differentiation in the cerium and uranium complexes [M(C5Me5)2(L)]0,+ (L=2,2'-bipyridine, 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine): structural, magnetic, and reactivity studies.

Treatment of [Ce(Cp*)(2)I] or [U(Cp*)(2)I(py)] with 1 mol equivalent of bipy (Cp*=C(5)Me(5); bipy=2,2'-bipyridine) in THF gave the adducts [M(Cp*)(2)I(bipy)] (M=Ce (1 a), M=U (1 b)), which were transformed into [M(Cp*)(2)(bipy)] (M=Ce (2 a), M=U (2 b)) by Na(Hg) reduction. The crystal structures of 1 a and 1 b show, by comparing the U-N and Ce-N distances and the variations in the C-C and C-N bond lengths within the bidentate ligand, that the extent of donation of electron density into the LUMO of bipy is more important in the actinide than in the lanthanide compound. Reaction of [Ce(Cp*)(2)I] or [U(Cp*)(2)I(py)] with 1 mol equivalent of terpy (terpy=2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) in THF afforded the adducts [M(Cp*)(2)(terpy)]I (M=Ce (3 a), M=U (3 b)), which were reduced to the neutral complexes [M(Cp*)(2)(terpy)] (M=Ce (4 a), M=U (4 b)) by sodium amalgam. The complexes [M(Cp*)(2)(terpy)][M(Cp*)(2)I(2)] (M=Ce (5 a), M=U (5 b)) were prepared from a 2:1 mixture of [M(Cp*)(2)I] and terpy. The rapid and reversible electron-transfer reactions between 3 and 4 in solution were revealed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The spectrum of 5 b is identical to that of the 1:1 mixture of [U(Cp*)(2)I(py)] and 3 b, or [U(Cp*)(2)I(2)] and 4 b. The magnetic data for 3 and 4 are consistent with trivalent cerium and uranium species, with the formulation [M(III)(Cp*)(2)(terpy(*-))] for 4 a and 4 b, in which spins on the individual units are uncoupled at 300 K and antiferromagnetically coupled at low temperature. Comparison of the crystal structures of 3 b, 4 b, and 5 b with those of 3 a and the previously reported ytterbium complex [Yb(Cp*)(2)(terpy)] shows that the U-N distances are much shorter, by 0.2 A, than those expected from a purely ionic bonding model. This difference should reflect the presence of stronger electron transfer between the metal and the terpy ligand in the actinide compounds. This feature is also supported by the small but systematic structural variations within the terdentate ligands, which strongly suggest that the LUMO of terpy is more filled in the actinide than in the lanthanide complexes and that the canonical forms [U(IV)(Cp*)(2)(terpy(*-))]I and [U(IV)(Cp*)(2)(terpy(2-))] contribute significantly to the true structures of 3 b and 4 b, respectively. This assumption was confirmed by the reactions of complexes 3 and 4 with the H(.) and H(+) donor reagents Ph(3)SnH and NEt(3)HBPh(4), which led to clear differentiation of the cerium and uranium complexes. No reaction was observed between 3 a and Ph(3)SnH, while the uranium counterpart 3 b was transformed in pyridine into the uranium(IV) compound [U(Cp*)(2){NC(5)H(4)(py)(2)}]I (6), where NC(5)H(4)(py)(2) is the 2,6-dipyridyl(hydro-4-pyridyl) ligand. Complex 6 was further hydrogenated to [U(Cp*)(2){NC(5)H(8)(py)(2)}]I (7) by an excess of Ph(3)SnH in refluxing pyridine. Treatment of 4 a with NEt(3)HBPh(4) led to oxidation of the terpy(*-) ligand and formation of [Ce(Cp*)(2)(terpy)]BPh(4), whereas similar reaction with 4 b afforded [U(Cp*)(2){NC(5)H(4)(py)(2)}]BPh(4) (6'). The crystal structures of 6, 6' and 7 were determined.

Inclusion of diprotonated [2.2.2]cryptand in the cavity of uranyl-complexed p-phenyltetrahomodioxacalix[4]arene.

In the title compound, 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazoniabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane dioxo[7,13,21,27-tetraphenyl-3,17-dioxapentacyclo[23.3.1.1(5,9).1(11,15).1(19,23)]ditriaconta-1(29),5,7,9(30),11(31),12,14,19(32),20,22,25,27-dodecaene-29,30,31,32-tetraolato]uranium dimethyl sulfoxide trisolvate, (C(18)H(38)N(2)O(6))[U(C(54)H(40)O(6))O(2)].3C(2)H(6)OS, the uranyl ion is bound to the four phenoxide groups of the deprotonated p-phenyltetrahomodioxacalix[4]arene ligand in a cone conformation, resulting in a dianionic complex. The diprotonated [2.2.2]cryptand counter-ion is located in the cavity defined by the eight aromatic rings of the homooxacalixarene, where it is held by cation-anion, cation-pi and possibly C-H...pi interactions. Dimerization in the packing leads to the formation of sandwich assemblages in which two diprotonated [2.2.2]cryptands are encompassed by two uranyl complexes.

New efficient synthesis of [Ul4(meCN)4]. X-ray crystal structures of [Ul2(MeCN)7][Ul6], [Ul4(py)3], and [U(dmf)9]l4.

Reaction of UCl4 and excess Me3Sil in acetonitrile provides a convenient route to [Ul4(MeCN)4] (1), which was isolated in excellent yield and crystallized in acetonitrile as the ion pair complex [Ul2(MeCN)7][Ul6] (2). Compound 1 was transformed in pyridine (py) and dimethylformamide (dmf) into the Lewis base adducts [Ul4(py)3] (3) and [Ul4(dmf)6] (4). Crystals of 3 and [U(dmf)9]l4 (5) were obtained by slow diffusion of diethyl ether into pyridine or dmf solutions of 1; compound 5 is the first tetracationic {U4+} entity to have been crystallographically characterized.

Homoleptic tris(dithiolene) and tetrakis(dithiolene) complexes of uranium(IV).

Reaction of UCl4 with 3 or 4 mol equiv of Na2dddt (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiine-2,3-dithiolate) in THF afforded the first example of a tetrakis(dithiolene) metal compound, [Na4(THF)8U(dddt)4](infinity) (1). The red crystals of 1 are composed of infinite zigzag chains in which Na2(micro-THF)3 fragments ensure the linking of Na2(THF)5U(dddt)4 moieties; the uranium atom is in a dodecahedral environment of eight sulfur atoms. Treatment of UCl4 with 3 mol equiv of Na2dddt in pyridine gave a mixture of tris- and tetrakis(dithiolene) compounds. After addition of 18c6 (18-crown-6), only the tris(dithiolene) complex was obtained and crystallized as orange crystals of [Na(18c6)(py)2]2[U(dddt)3].2py (2.2py) in which the isolated [U(dddt)3]2- anion adopts a slightly distorted trigonal prismatic configuration. A few red crystals of the unsolvated complex 2 and the trinuclear anionic compound [Na(18c6)(py)2]3[Na{U(dddt)3}2] (3) were also obtained along with orange crystals of 2.2py. All the tris(dithiolene) compounds exhibit large folding of the dddt ligand and significant interaction between the C=C double bond and the metal center.

Tris(dithiolene) complexes of neodymium and cerium: mononuclear species, chains, and honeycomb networks.

Reactions of Ln(BH4)3(THF)3 (Ln = Nd, Ce) and M2dddt (M = Na, K; dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiine-2,3-dithiolate) in THF or pyridine gave, after addition of 18c6 (18-crown-6), several crystalline compounds which all contain the tris(dithiolene) Ln(dddt)3 unit. Crystals of [Na(18c6)(py)2]2[Na(18c6)(py)][Nd(dddt)3(py)].3py (1.3py) are built up from discrete mononuclear cationic and anionic species whereas crystals of {[Na(18c6)(py)2](0.5)[Na(18c6)(py)(1.5)][Na(1.5)Nd(dddt)3]}(infinity) (2) are composed of discrete [Na(18c6)(py)x]+ cations and polymeric anionic two-dimensional layers in which the Nd(dddt)3 units are linked to three neighbors by sodium atoms to form a honeycomb network. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the molar magnetic susceptibility of 2 shows that chiMT decreases from 1.63 cm3 K mol(-1) at 300 K down to 0.6 cm3 K mol(-1) at 5 K, due to the crystal-field splitting of the (4)I(9/2) free-ion state. Complexes {[Na3(18c6)(1.5)Nd(dddt)3(THF)].3THF}(infinity) (3.3THF) and {[K3(18c6)(1.5)Nd(dddt)3(py)].3py}(infinity) (4.3py) exhibit neutral polymeric layers with the Nd(dddt)3 units linked by M2(18c6) fragments. In the cerium compound {[Na2(18c6)Na(py)2Ce(dddt)3(py)].3py}(infinity) (5.3py), each Ce(dddt)3 unit is linked to two neighbors only by Na2(18c6) moieties, giving infinite zigzag chains.

Tri-mu2-chloro-tetrachloro-mu3-oxo-hexakis(tetrahydrofuran-kappaO)dititanium(III)samarium(III): a novel trinuclear Sm-Ti mixed species.

In the title compound, [SmTi2Cl7O(C4H8O)6], the metal ions are linked by a central mu3-oxo ion and by three mu2-chloro ions, giving a planar moiety containing a binary crystallographic axis. The coordination spheres are completed by terminal chloro ligands and tetrahydrofuran molecules, with resulting pentagonal bipyramidal and octahedral environments for the Sm and Ti atoms, respectively.

Self-inclusion in 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-26,27,28-trihydroxy-25-(methoxycarbonylmethoxy)calix[4]arene chloroform trisolvate.

The title compound, C(47)H(60)O(6).3CHCl(3), is the first example of a lower-rim mono-ester calixarene derivative to be crystallographically characterized. The cone conformation adopted by the macrocycle is stabilized by three intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Self-inclusion of the methyl ester chain in the cavity of an adjacent molecule gives rise to infinite chains parallel to the c axis. C-H...pi interactions involving the methyl group most imbedded in the cavity contribute to the stabilization of the system.

Synthesis and crystal structure of tetra- and hexanuclear uranium(IV) complexes with hexadentate compartmental Schiff-base ligands.

Treatment of UCl4 with the hexadentate Schiff bases H2Li in thf gave the expected [ULiCl2(thf)] complexes [H2Li=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-R and R = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine (i= 1), R = 1,3-propanediamine (i= 2), R = 2-amino-benzylamine (i= 3), R = 2-methyl-1,2-propanediamine (i= 4), R = 1,2-phenylenediamine (i= 5)]. The crystal structure of [UL4Cl2(thf)] (4) shows the metal in a quite perfect pentagonal bipyramidal configuration, with the two Cl atoms in apical positions. Reaction of UCl4 with H4Li in pyridine did not afford the mononuclear products [U(H2Li)Cl2(py)x] but gave instead polynuclear complexes [H4Li=N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-R and R = 1,3-propanediamine (i= 6), R = 2-amino-benzylamine (i= 7) or R = 2-methyl-1,2-propanediamine (i= 8)]. In the presence of H4L6 and H4L7 in pyridine, UCl4 was transformed in a serendipitous and reproducible manner into the tetranuclear U(iv) complexes [Hpy]2[U4(L6)2(H2L6)2Cl6] (6a) and [Hpy]2[U4(L7)2(H2L7)2Cl6][U4(L7)2(H2L7)2Cl4(py)2] (7), respectively. Treatment of UCl4 with [Zn(H2L6)] led to the formation of the neutral compound [U4(L6)2(H2L6)2Cl4(py)2] (6b). The hexanuclear complex [Hpy]2[U6(L8)4Cl10(py)4] (8) was obtained by reaction of UCl4 and H4L8. The centrosymmetric crystal structures of 6a.2HpyCl.2py, 6b.6py, 7.16py and 8.6py illustrate the potential of Schiff bases as associating ligands for the design of polynuclear assemblies.

8,19-Dimethyl-8,19-dihydro-8,19-ethanoanthra[2'',3'':2,3;6'',7'':2',3']di-1,4-dioxino[5,6-b;5',6'-b']diquinoxaline.

The title compound, C(34)H(22)N(4)O(4), results from the reaction of 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene with 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline. The molecule, which contains a binary crystallographic symmetry axis, comprises two planar 'wings' around a central bicyclic unit. The non-ideal geometry of the latter evidences some strain, as in previous compounds with the same central core. Each molecule is involved in pi-pi interactions with four of its neighbours, oriented upside-down, which results in the formation of sheets of tightly packed molecules.

[2,6-Bis[(dimethylamino)methyl]pyridine-kappa3N](2,2-methylenediphenolato-kappa2O,O')dioxouranium(VI) acetone solvate.

In the title compound, [UO(2)(C(13)H(10)O(2))(C(11)H(19)N(3))].C(3)H(6)O, the U atom is in a pentagonal-bipyramidal environment, with the three N atoms of the 2,6-bis[(dimethylamino)methyl]pyridine ligand and the two O atoms of the dianionic 2,2'-methylenediphenolate ligand in the equatorial plane. The geometry is compared with that of previously reported 1:2 uranyl-diphenoxide complexes.

Catharanthinol and dihydrocatharanthinol: two Iboga-class alkaloids.

The title compounds are indole alkaloids of the Iboga class. In both compounds, viz. catharanthinol methanol solvate, C(20)H(24)N(2)O.CH(4)O, (I), and dihydrocatharanthinol monohydrate, C(20)H(26)N(2)O.H(2)O, (II), a nitrogen-containing seven-membered ring is fused to the indole system and shares two sides with a tricyclic isoquinuclidine group. The main difference between (I) and (II) is the presence of a C=C bond in the isoquinuclidine ring in (I). The presence of amine and hydroxy groups in these molecules and of methanol [in (I)] or water [in (II)] solvent molecules results in intra- and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Uranyl-based metallamacrocycles: tri- and tetranuclear complexes with (2R,3R,4S,5S)-tetrahydrofurantetracarboxylic acid.

The trinuclear [UO2L]36- and tetranuclear [UO2L]48- metallamacrocycles, obtained by reaction of uranyl nitrate with the rigidly angular ligand (2R,3R,4S,5S)-tetrahydrofurantetracarboxylic acid (H4L) in a basic medium, are in equilibrium in methanol solution. Depending on the counterion, one or the other can be selectively isolated in crystal form. These rare examples of supramolecules incorporating actinide ions confirm the high potential and unique features of uranyl as a building block. Uranyl complexation through both the tri- and bidentate sites of the ligand is at variance with previous assumptions resulting from molecular modeling in nuclear waste reprocessing studies.

Synthesis and crystal structure of uranium(IV) complexes with compartmental Schiff bases: from mononuclear species to tri- and tetranuclear clusters.

Treatment of U(acac)4 with the hexadentate Schiff base H2L(i) gave the [UL(i)2] complexes 1-4 [H2L1=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-2-methyl-1,2-propanediamine, H2L2=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine, H2L3=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-2-aminobenzylamine and H2L4=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine for 1-4, respectively]. The [U(L(i))(acac)2] compounds could not be isolated because of their ready disproportionation into [UL(i)2] and U(acac)4. Compounds 2 and 4 adopt a meridional configuration in the solid state and in solution, while exists in solution as the two equilibrating meridional and sandwich isomers and crystallizes in the meridional isomeric form. Reaction of U(acac)4 with H4L5 afforded the expected compound [U(H2L5)(acac)2] (5) [H4L5=N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-2-methyl-1,2-propanediamine] but, in the presence of H4L6 and H4L7, U(acac)4 was transformed in a serendipitous and reproducible manner into the tri- and tetranuclear U(IV) complexes [U3(L6)(HL6)2(acac)2] (6) and [U4(HL7)4(H2L7)2] (7) [H4L6=N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine and H4L7=N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-2-aminobenzylamine]. The crystal structures of 6.3thf and 7.5thf show the assembling role of the Schiff-base ligands.

Stereochemistry in functionalized macrocycle complexes: control of hydroxyl substituent orientation.

Use of a hydroxyl-functionalized open chain tetramine in a template reaction based on its Cu(II) complex leads, after reduction, to a new tetraaza macrocycle with both amino and hydroxyl substituents. The macrocycle is formed predominantly as its trans (anti) isomer, though the cis form is detectable and both have been structurally characterized in the form of their metal complexes. Although both the Cu(II) and the Co(III) complexes of the tetramine precursor ligand have the hydroxyl group in an axial position of a chair six-membered chelate ring, the trans macrocycle forms Co(III) complexes with this substituent in both equatorial and axial positions.

Functionalized macrocycles from functionalized tetra-amines: pendent-arm macrocycles derived from dichloropivalic acid.

Reaction between ethane-1,2-diamine and 3,3'-dichloropivalic acid results in different, isomeric tetra-amine derivatives, one a tetraamino carboxylic acid and the other a carboxamidotriamino alcohol, depending upon reaction conditions. Intended conversion of the Cu(II) complex of the former to a cyclam-like macrocycle through reaction with nitroethane and formaldehyde results in isolation of derivatives of both the former and the latter. This can be rationalized by assuming the intermediacy of an azetidinone, a species similar to that seen in simpler reactions of dichloropivalates. A single reaction thereby provides pendent-arm macrocycles where one has an electrophilic and the other a nucleophilic substituent. Parallel chemistry is not seen in the reaction between propane-1,3-diamine and 3,3'-dichloropivalate.

Lanthanide(III)/actinide(III) differentiation in coordination of azine molecules to tris(cyclopentadienyl) complexes of cerium and uranium.

Reaction of azine molecules L with the trivalent metallocenes [M(C5H4R)3](M = Ce, U; R = But, SiMe3) in toluene gave the Lewis base adducts [M(C5H4R)3(L)](L = pyridine, 3-picoline, 3,5-lutidine, 3-chloropyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, 3,5-dimethylpyrazine and s-triazine), except in the cases of M = U and L = 3-chloropyridine, pyridazine, pyrazine and s-triazine where oxidation of U(III) was found to occur. In the pairs of analogous compounds of Ce(III) and U(III), i.e.[M(C5H4But)3(L)](L = pyridine, picoline) and [M(C5H4SiMe3)3(L)](L = pyridine, lutidine, pyrimidine and dimethylpyrazine), the M-N and average M-C distances are longer for M = Ce than for M = U; however, within a series of azine adducts of the same metallocene, no significant variation is noted in the M-N and average M-C distances. The equilibria between [M(C5H4R)3], L and [M(C5H4R)3(L)] were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The stability constants of the uranium complexes, KUL, are greater than those of the cerium counterparts, KCeL. The values of KML are much greater for R = SiMe3 than for R = But and a linear correlation is found between the logarithms of KML and the hydrogen-bond basicity pKHB scale of the azines. Thermodynamic parameters indicate that the enthalpy-entropy compensation effect holds for these complexation reactions. Competition reactions of [Ce(C5H4R)3] and [U(C5H4R)3] with L show that the selectivity of L in favour of U(III) increases with the [small pi] donor character of the metallocene and is proportional to the pi accepting ability of the azine molecule, measured by its reduction potential.
