[Polyneuritis cranialis HHV-6 infection associated].

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) has been shown to be a common cause of acute febrile disease in young children, including exanthema subitum. HHV-6 has also been associated with a number of neurologic disorders including encephalitis and the virus has been postulated to play a role in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue syndrome. The disorder of multiple cranial nerve palsies without spinal cord involvement is referred to as polyneuritis cranialis and is rare. The Authors describe a case of polyneuritis cranialis in a 52-year old woman treated with ganciclovir and only complete eradication of the virus.

[Amoxicillin in tonsillectomy: preliminary data on the evaluation of serum and tissue concentrations].

Amoxicillin was administered to 50 patients with chronic recurrent tonsillitis waiting for tonsillectomy. Group A (N=16) received 2.2 g of amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid with intravenous injection 10 minutes before tonsillectomy Group B (N=34) was treated with 3 doses of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid administered orally the day before surgery, plus one oral administration 2 hours before tonsillectomy. Antibiotic doses were established on patient's weight using maximum suggested. The measures were, estimated in serum and in tonsils using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, (HPLC). The data show better efficacy of intravenous administration than oral administration.

[BK virus encephalitis in an HIV-seropositive patient. Preliminary data].

The BK virus (BKV) belongs to the family of the polyoma group. Although up to 60% of AIDS patients excrete BKV in the urine, there have been few reports of infection of kidney, lung, retina, brain and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. We report the case of a 37 year-old male HIV positive patient with BKV encephalitis. This diagnosis should be considered in AIDS patients with signs of cerebral disease.

[Calmette-Guerin bacillus disseminated infection after intravesical instillation].

Local immunotherapy with bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is an effective and frequently used treatment for superficial bladder cancer. Serious side effects are infrequent but can affect every organ system. We describe a 53 year- old man with a disseminated bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) infection after intravescical instillation for bladder carcinoma. Recent literature is reviewed for this rare complication.

[Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis].

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare condition and, sometimes, associated with a cervical lymphadenopathy. The authors report a case of an isolated nasopharyngeal tuberculosis in a 69-year-old female with otological symptoms. The case is remarkable because of its coming in a non-endemic zone for the tuberculosis, and because of its probable persistence by many years.

[Diagnosis of malaria with immunochromatographic test The Novara experience].

Microscopic detection of parasites has been the reference standard for malaria diagnosis for decades. Recently rapid antigen assays provide an effective tool for the detection of malaria in symptomatic patients. In Novara Maggiore della Carità Hospital we evaluated the efficacy of the ParaSight F test in patients with malaria.
