Survey on the utilization of antipyretic analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prescription of antipyretic analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs by the medical staff of Nanfang Hospital. METHODS: Drug utilization index (DUI) was used to analyze the prescriptions of antipyretic analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs to out-patients in the fourth quarter of 2001. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In 71.4% of the prescriptions, the DUI ranged from 0.9 to 1.1, indicating basically justified utilization of antipyretic analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs in Nanfang Hospital though with occasional abuses of somiton tablets. We urge more careful application of these drugs and their compound preparations, especially in infant patients.

[Flow model of internal-loop granular sludge bed nitrifying reactor].

Internal-loop granular sludge bed nitrifying reactor is a new type of aerobic nitrifying equipment and has shown a good potential for nitrification. To study the flow pattern and construct the flow model, the tracer tests were performed using pulse stimulus-response technique. Based on the experimental results, the flow pattern in the settling section and the circulating section of reactor were analyzed by axial dispersion model and tank-in-series model, respectively. The dispersion number D/uL of 0.00148 in the settling section indicates that its flow pattern is similar to plug flow reactor (PFR), and the series number N of 1.021 in the circulating section indicates that its flow pattern is similar to continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). During steady state, the theoretic hydraulic retention time is 360 min, and the actual hydraulic retention time is 341.2 min. The percentage of dead space in the reactor is 5.22%, thereinto the dead space caused by biomass (db ) is 0.75 % and the hydraulic dead space (dh) is 4.47%, which shows that the structural performance of the reactor is excellent. Based on the experiments and analysis, a model of CSTR and PFR in series was constructed. The actual hydraulic retention time distribution of the reactor is in good agreement with the model predictions. Since the relative error between them is 8.56%, the model is accurate to describe the flow pattern. The results have laid a foundation for the kinetic model of the reactor and will be helpful for its design and operation.

[Effect of angiotensin II on L-type calcium channel in ischemic ventricular myocytes of the guinea pig].

Using whole cell patch clamp, the effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) on the current L-type calcium channel (I(Ca.L)) were observed in guinea pig isolated ventricular myocytes under simulated ischemia condition, which was realized through hypoxia, glucose deficiency, high lactic acid and acidosis. The results showed that, under the condition of simulated ischemia, the peak of I(Ca.L) was reduced with maximal activation potential at 0 mV. Administration of Ang II (100 nmol/L) enhanced the peak of I(Ca.L) during ischemia and shifted the maximal activation potential to -10 mV. The possible mechanism of these effects is discussed.

[Effect of angiotensin II on potassium channels of ischemic ventricular myocytes of the guinea pig].

The experiments were carried out on guinea pig isolated ventricular myocytes by using whole-cell patch clamp. The effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) on potassium ion channels of acute ischemic myocytes were observed. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings showed that physiological potassium current, including delayed rectifier potassium current and inward rectifier potassium current were inhibited under the condition of simulated ischemia, and then further inhibited by treatment with Ang II. ATP-sensitive potassium currents were increased under simulated ischemia and were further enhanced by Ang II treatment.

Evaluation of the role of phosphatidylserine translocase activity in ABCA1-mediated lipid efflux.

The following two theories for the mechanism of ABCA1 in lipid efflux to apolipoprotein acceptors have been proposed: 1) that ABCA1 directly binds the apolipoprotein ligand and then facilitates lipid efflux and 2) that ABCA1 acts as a phosphatidylserine (PS) translocase, increasing PS levels in the plasma membrane exofacial leaflet, and that this is sufficient to facilitate apolipoprotein binding and lipid assembly. Upon induction of ABCA1 in RAW264.7 cells by cAMP analogues there was a moderate increase in cell surface PS as detected by annexin V binding, whereas apoAI binding was increased more robustly. Apoptosis induced large increases in annexin V and apoAI binding; however, apoptotic cells did not efflux lipids to apoAI. Annexin V did not act as a cholesterol acceptor, and it did not compete for the cholesterol acceptor or cell binding activity of apoAI. ApoAI binds to ABCA1-expressing cells, and with incubation at 37 degrees C apoAI is co-localized within the cells in ABCA1-containing endosomes. Fluorescent recovery after photobleaching demonstrated that apoAI bound to ABCA1-expressing cells was relatively immobile, suggesting that it was bound either directly or indirectly to an integral membrane protein. Although ABCA1 induction was associated with a small increase in cell surface PS, these results argue against the notion that this cell surface PS is sufficient to mediate cellular apoAI binding and lipid efflux.

Start-up strategies of UASB reactor for treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater.

Two start-up strategies of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater were investigated. The results showed that both of them were workable. Compared with the strategy that started up the reactor directly using chloromycetin wastewater, the strategy that started up the reactor first using mixed wastewater and then using chloromycetin wastewater could save time by 23%. When the latter strategy was adopted the development of sludge activity fluctuated more largely and its final activity was lower, but the sludge grew faster in the course of start-up.

[Performance of internal-loop air-lift nitrifying bioreactor].

The performance of internal-loop air-lift nitrifying bioreactor was good with strong tolerance to influent ammonia concentration (78.49 mmol/L), high volume converting rate (163.18 mmol/L.d) and obvious working stability (ammonia removal > 94.42%). During operation of internal-loop air-lift bioreactor, the nitrifying activated sludge was granulated. The nitrifying granular activated sludge began to appear on day 45. Its average diameter was 0.83 mm, settling velocity was 55.53 m/h and specific ammonia removal rate was 0.95 mmol (NH4(+)-N)/g (VS).d. The nitrifying granular activated sludge had the activity for anaerobic ammonia oxidation with ammonia oxidation rate of 0.23 mmol (NH4(+)-N)/g(VS).d and nitrite reduction rate of 0.24 mmol (NO2(-)-N)/g(VS).d.

[Survey on the utilization of narcotic analgesics].

UNLABELLED: To evaluate the prescription of narcotic analgesics by the medical staff of Nanfang Hospital. METHODS: Drug utilization index (DUI) was used to analyze the prescriptions of narcotic analgesics to both in- and out-patients in the year of 2000. RESULTS: Six kinds of narcotic analgesics were prescribed mostly to relieve renal biliary colic, cancer pain and cough in the year 2000 in Nanfang Hospital. DUI shows no abuses of narcotic analgesics. CONCLUSION: The utilization of narcotic analgesics in Nanfang Hospital is basically well justified.
