[Functional endoscopic sinus surgery assisted by navigation system--own experience].

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is nowadays a gold standard in case of chronic sinusitis. Microscopes and endoscopes are routinely used and the plan of the operation is based on physical examination and high resolution computed tomography of paranasal sinuses done in the bone frame. In the last few years trials were done with intraoperative navigation systems. This kind of system was tested in the ENT department of Karol Marcinkowski University in Poznań. Surgery was performed using electromagnetic and optical one. Thirteen patients with chronic sinusitis underwent surgery. A high resolution computed tomography was done in three planes. Then the data were transferred to the computer system. Those data were used to plan the surgery (determination of the "safe corridor") and in the intraoperative monitoring of the position of surgical instruments. We can state an improvement of the comfort for the surgeon and safety for the patient. We did not state disturbances in system work due to patient displacement during surgery. Accuracy and rapidity of the computer system allowed to perform safe surgery. Authors accentuate the usability of this system in case of reoperation, extensive pathological changes and in congenital malformations.

[Is the method of localizing intraocular foreign bodies according to Madroszkiewicz still outstanding?].

Nowadays, in available methods of visualizing and localizing intraocular foreign bodies, apart from ultrasonography, a special stress is laid on computed tomography. Classic radiological method of Madroszkiewicz - in which the X-rays of the orbit is made after putting up the special indicators under the conjunctiva - seems to be neglected considering those more advanced diagnostic methods. The aim of this study is to prove the undoubtful novelty of this method together with ultrasonography, in comparison with computed tomography on the grounds of 2 cases, presenting the patients successfully treated at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Medical Sciences, Poznań, Poland.

[Adenocarcinoma of the lung with metastases to the pituitary and both adrenal glands].

A case of lung adenocarcinoma with metastases in both adrenals and pituitary gland in 52-year old patient is presented. Adrenal glands metastases were diagnosed on a base of CT scans. Pituitary metastases caused gradual loss of vision. MR imaging showed a lesion in the sella and suprasellar areas and suggested meningioma. Right frontal craniotomy with the partial removal of the tumor was performed. Three days later the patient died. Histopathological results of the pituitary masses revealed adenocarcinoma.

[Possibilities of MR evaluation in thyroid orbitopathy].

Thyroid orbitopathy is one of the main indications for orbital imaging. MR yields most complex, both quantitative and qualitative information concerning extraocular muscle pathology, including eye motility disorders. This examination is helpful in the treatment planning and evaluation of its efficiency.

[Enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome in patients with hypoacusis and deafness].

UNLABELLED: In 1978 Valvassori and Clemis have reported that enlarged vestibular aqueduct can cause progressive perceptive hearing loss and finally deafness. AIM: Analysis of CT scans of patients with cochlear implants. Analysis of radiological data of 120 implanted patients was performed. CT examinations were performed during qualification to cochlear implantation. Most of the CT scans were performed using high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). A special attention was paid to patients with progressive perceptive hearing loss and CT of two patients with "gusher" during CI surgery. In one case (6-years old girl with bilateral profound perceptive hearing loss diagnosed in 2nd year of age) an enlarged vestibular aqueduct was found radiologically. In the second case (16 years old girl with progressive perceptive hearing loss since 1st year of age) no enlarged vestibular aqueduct was detected. Diagnostics and treatment of enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome are presented.
