F-block N-heterocyclic carbene complexes.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) can bind as two-electron sigma-donor ligands to lanthanide and actinide metal cations. In this review we summarise how the incorporation of an anionic group (alkoxide or amido), to form heterobidentate NHC ligands, allows the synthesis of a range of f-block NHC adducts. The tethering group also allows the lability of the NHC group, and its subsequent reactivity, to be studied. We include a brief survey of the known, structurally characterised f-element-NHC bond distances, and a range of substrates that react to displace the metal-bound NHC group.

Group I cation templated formation of luminescent mono- and bis-substituted thionaphthol heterobimetallic complexes of Pr, Nd, Eu and Tb.

Metathesis of lanthanide tris di-tert-butyl beta-diketonates ([Ln(thd)3] Ln=Pr, Nd, Eu, Tb) with one or two equivalents of group 1 salts of the sulfur bridged binaphtholate dianion [1,1'-S(2-OC10H4But(2)-3,6)2]2-, [M2L], M=K, Li affords luminescent mono- and bis-ligand substituted complexes ML[LnL(thd)2].L; M=K, Ln=Pr , Nd , Eu and Tb (L=thf, diethyl ether or toluene) and M(thf)2[LnL2(thd)]; M=Li, Ln=Pr , Nd , Eu , Tb . The potassium salt [K2L] affords mono-L substituted complexes most cleanly, while the lithium salt [Li2L] yields the bis-L substituted complexes most cleanly. The L ligands function as antenna for the sensitised lanthanide-centred emission in Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes. The X-ray single-crystal structures of mono- and bis-L lanthanide complexes of Nd3+ are presented.

Selective oxo functionalization of the uranyl ion with 3d metal cations.

The linear uranyl dication [UO2]2+ can be bound in one of two coordination sites in the ditopic Pacman-shaped pyrrolic macrocyle H4L. Incorporation of Mn2+, Fe2+, or Co2+ cations in the second donor compartment affords the first uranyl complexes with a transition-metal-functionalized oxo group.

Bifunctional yttrium(III) and titanium(IV) NHC catalysts for lactide polymerisation.

Lewis acidic yttrium(III) and titanium(IV) derivatives of anionic, metal-tethered carbenes apparently act as bifunctional catalysts for the polymerisation of D,L-lactide, using a combination of Lewis acid and base functionalities to initiate ring opening of the cyclic monomer; the alcohol- and amino-functionalised carbenes from which they derive provide models for the first insertion step, and also display metal-free polymerisation catalysis to generate polylactic acid.

Regioselective C-H activation of lanthanide-bound N-heterocyclic carbenes.

The reaction of Ln(L)N''2 (Ln = Nd, Ce; L = t-BuNCH2CH2[C{NCHCHNt-Bu}], N'' = N(SiMe3)2) with trimethylsilyl iodide regiospecifically functionalises the carbene backbone at the C4-carbene ring position to afford the silylated complex Ln(L')N''I; Ln(L')N''2 is isolated after attempted reduction (L' = t-BuNCH2CH2[C{NC(SiMe3)CHNt-Bu}]) which allows a comparison of the structurally characterised complexes Nd(L)N''2, [Nd(L')N''I]2, and Nd(L')N''2.

Synthesis and small molecule reactivity of uranium(IV) alkoxide complexes with both bound and pendant N-heterocyclic carbene ligands.

The syntheses of two tetravalent uranium alkoxide-carbene complexes are reported, [UIL3], and [UL4] where L = OCMe2CH2[1-C(NCHCHNiPr)]. The latter shows dynamic behaviour of the alkoxycarbene ligands in solution at room temperature, and the crystal structure of [UL4] shows that one carbene group remains uncoordinated. The unbound N-heterocyclic carbene group is trapped by a range of reagents such as 16-valence-electron metal carbonyl fragments and BH3 moieties, forming, for example, [UL3(mu-L)W(CO)5], [UL2(mu-L)2Mo(CO)4], and [UL(n)(L-BH3)(4-n)] (n = 1-4), demonstrating the potential for these hemilabile electropositive metal-carbene complexes to participate in the bifunctional activation of small molecules.

Thermally stable potassium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with alkoxide ligands, and a polymeric crystal structure with distorted, bridging carbenes.

Alkoxide-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) stabilise the potassium-imidazole-2-ylidene fragment against 1,2 alkyl rearrangement reactions; this allows the first structural characterisation of a potassium NHC complex, which reveals distorted and unusual bonding interactions between the imidazole ring and the potassium cation.

Silver nanoparticles and polymeric medical devices: a new approach to prevention of infection?

OBJECTIVES: Implantable devices are major risk factors for hospital-acquired infection. Biomaterials coated with silver oxide or silver alloy have all been used in attempts to reduce infection, in most cases with controversial or disappointing clinical results. We have developed a completely new approach using supercritical carbon dioxide to impregnate silicone with nanoparticulate silver metal. This study aimed to evaluate the impregnated polymer for antimicrobial activity. METHODS: After impregnation the nature of the impregnation was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Two series of polymer discs were then tested, one washed in deionized water and the other unwashed. In each series, half of the discs were coated with a plasma protein conditioning film. The serial plate transfer test was used as a screen for persisting activity. Bacterial adherence to the polymers and the rate of kill, and effect on planktonic bacteria were measured by chemiluminescence and viable counts. Release rates of silver ions from the polymers in the presence and absence of plasma was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). RESULTS: Tests for antimicrobial activity under various conditions showed mixed results, explained by the modes and rates of release of silver ions. While washing removed much of the initial activity there was continued release of silver ions. Unexpectedly, this was not blocked by conditioning film. CONCLUSIONS: The methodology allows for the first time silver impregnation (as opposed to coating) of medical polymers and promises to lead to an antimicrobial biomaterial whose activity is not restricted by increasing antibiotic resistance.

Bent metal carbene geometries in amido N-heterocyclic carbene complexes.

Lithium(I) and uranium(VI) amido-tethered Bu(t)-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes exhibit very distorted metal-carbene bonds; the corresponding magnesium(II) and mesityl-substituted NHC uranium(VI) complexes are undistorted; the distortion does not affect the ligand binding strength, suggesting a dominance of electrostatic character in closed-shell electropositive metal-carbene bonds.

Synthesis and luminescence studies of mono- and C3-symmetric, tris(ligand) complexes of Sm(III), Y(III) and Eu(III) with sulfur-bridged binaphtholate ligands.

A series of trivalent mono- and tris(ligand) lanthanide complexes of a sulfur-bridged binaphthol ligand [1,1'-S(2-HOC(10)H(4)Bu(t)(2)-3,6)(2)] H(2)L(SN), have been prepared and characterised both structurally and photophysically. The H(2)L(SN) ligand provides an increased steric bulk and offers an additional donor atom (sulfur) as compared with 1,1'-binaphthol (BINOL), a ligand commonly used to complex Lewis acidic lanthanide catalysts. Reaction of the diol H(2)L(SN) with [Sm[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3)] affords silylamido- and amino- derivatives [Sm(L(SN))[N(SiMe(3))(2)][HN(SiMe(3))(2)]] and the crystallographically characterised [Sm(L(SN))[N(SiMe(3))(2)](thf)(2)] with different degrees of structural rigidity, depending on the presence of coordinating solvents. The binaphthyl groups of the L(SN) ligand act as sensitisers of the metal centred emission, which is observed for the Eu(III) and Sm(III) complexes studied. We have therefore sought to use emission spectroscopy as a non-invasive technique to monitor a monomer-dimer equilibrium in these complexes. A dramatic difference between the emission properties of the unreactive dimeric Sm(III) aryloxide complex, the solvated monomeric analogues and the amido adduct demonstrated the potential use of such a technique. For a few representative lanthanides (Ln = Sm, Eu and Y) the reaction of the dilithium salt Li(2)L(SN) with either [Ln[N(SiMe(3))(2]3)] or [LnCl(3)(thf)(3)] affords only the homoleptic complex [Li(S)(3)][LnL(SN)(3)](S = thf or diethyl ether); we report the structural characterisation of the Sm complex. However, the reactions of this dipotassium salt K(2)L(SN) with [Sm[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3)] or [SmCl(3)(thf)(3)] give only [SmL(SN)N(SiMe(3))(2)], or intractable mixtures respectively, in which no (tris)binaphtholate is observed. The only isolable lanthanide-L(SN) halide adduct so far is [YbL(SN)I(thf)].
