[Clinical epidemiology of 1,087 patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical epidemiological characteristics of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in China. METHODS: A multiple-center and prospective survey of the patients with MODS admitted to 37 hospitals in 11 provinces from March 2002 to January 2005. RESULTS: The original causes of the MODS were still severe infection, major operations, shock, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, trauma, and severe acute pancreatitis. The age of 66.1% patients was over 60 years in 1 087 patients. The total mortality of the 1 087 patients was 60.4%. With the age increased, the mortality also increased. The mortalities of the group with simple dysfunction of the brain, lung, kidney, blood, cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract were higher than those of the group with the normal organ function. The mortality increased obviously with the numbers of the dysfunction organs. The methods of supportive treatment for the dysfunctional organs were more sophisticated than before. Especially the rates of administration of blood purification, parenteral alimentation, and enteral alimentation were higher. CONCLUSION: Although the methods of supportive treatment in the dysfunctional organs are more sophisticated, the mortality of the MODS was still as high as 60.4%. The number of patients with age higher than 60 years was 713 cases (66.1%), therefore how to manage senile-MODS has become a major problem. Cardiovascular system, the brain, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, lung, liver and blood were the main organs involved, and the mortality of dysfunction of cardiovascular system ranked the highest.

Hexagonal and prismatic nanowalled ZnO microboxes.

We hereby report hydrothermal syntheses of new microstructures of semiconducting ZnO. Single-crystalline prismatic ZnO microboxes formed by nanowalls and hexagonal hollow microdisks closed by plates with micron-sized inorganic fullerene-like structures have been made in a base-free medium through a one-step hydrothermal synthesis with the help of n-butanol (NB). Structures and morphologies of the products were confirmed by results from powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. NB has been found to play a crucial role in the growth of these hollow structures. It is indicated that these hollow ZnO crystals were grown from redissolution of interiors. These ZnO microboxes exhibit a band emission in the visible range, implying the possession of a high content of defects.

[Studies on the synthesis of zeolite 4A in mirowave field by means of X-ray diffraction].

Good quality zeolite 4A with homogenous particle size, high whiteness and high calcium exchangeability was successfully synthesized in microwave field. The effects of the ratio of silica to aluminium, the ratio of water to sodium, the power of microwave, and the time of microwave heating on the synthesis of zeolite 4A were studied by means of X-ray diffraction. And the products were also characterized by IR, SEM and DSC. The optimal condition for the synthesis of zeolite 4A in microwave was found.

Hydrothermal synthesis of prismatic NaHoF(4) microtubes and NaSmF(4) nanotubes.

A new example of tubular materials based on sodium rare-earth tetrafluorides, NaHoF(4) and NaSmF(4), has been fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method. In addition, an unusual nanotube with a perfect couple of an outer prismatic shell with an inner concentric prismatic nanorod at the center is found. According to the architectures of various products, the general growth mechanism of these tubes is proposed.
