Preparation and Characterization of Six Bis(N-methylpyrrolidine)-C(60) Isomers: Magnetic Deshielding in Isomeric Bisadducts of C(60).

A series of isomers of bis(N-methylpyrrolidine)-C(60) 2 (Prato bisadducts) was prepared by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of N-methylazomethine ylide to C(60). Six isomers were separated and characterized by ESI-MS, UV/vis, and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. The structures of these bisadducts were assigned based on (1) comparison of their molecular symmetries with their (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra, (2) comparison of their UV/vis spectra with those of corresponding Bingel-Hirsch bisadducts, and (3) the order of deshielding of the methylene and N-methyl (1)H NMR resonances. Prato bisaddition is less chemoselective than Bingel-Hirsch bisaddition to C(60).

Total Synthesis of (+/-)-Leporin A.

An efficient synthesis of (+/-)-leporin A (1) has been developed using a tandem Knoevenagel condensation-inverse electron demand intramolecular hetero Diels-Alder reaction to construct the key tricyclic intermediate 3 from pyridone 5 and dienal 6 in one pot in 35% yield. Hydroxylation (71%) of 3 and methylation (77%) of the resulting hydroxypyridone 2 completed the first total synthesis of (+/-)-leporin A (1).

Real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography: a review of the development of the technology and its clinical application.

Real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) is a new imaging technique that can provide accurate, important, and additional information concerning cardiovascular morphology, pathology, and function. This article will review the development of the technology of RT3DE and its clinical application. As the technique continues to evolve, RT3DE is bound to play an increasingly important role in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of patients with various forms of cardiovascular disease.
