[Study of esthetic characteristic changes of soft tissue profile of patients with Angle Class division 1 malocclusion treated by functional regulator].

OBJECTIVE: Five esthetic indexes were used to evaluate the soft tissue profile changes of patients with Angle Class division 1 malocclusion treated by Functional Regulator. METHODS: 21 patients with Angle Class division 1 malocclusion were treated by functional regulator. Pretreatment and posttreatment cephalograms of every patient were traced to analyze the esthetic characteristic of soft tissue profile. RESULTS: Most of the indexes tended to normal after treatment. CONCLUSION: Soft tissue profile of most patients with Angle Class division 1 malocclusion was improved after functional orthopedics while changes were different individually. Second stage treatment was still required for some patients.

[Epidemiological study of human caliciviruses among children with acute diarrhea in Lulong county, 1999 - 2001].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological characteristus of human caliciviruses (HuCVs) among children under 5 years of age with acute diarrhea and to estimate the disease burden in Lulong county. METHODS: HuCVs were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Some PCR amplicons were cloned and sequenced. Phylogenetic tree was constructed for strain characterization. The rate of HuCVs-attributed hospitalization was estimated according to the positive rate of HuCVs detection in fecal specimens collected from hospitalized diarrhea patients. RESULTS: Between July 1999 and June 2001, 708 fecal specimens were collected, of which 393 rotavirus-negative and 5 rotavirus-positive specimens were detected for HuCVs. Thirty-one point six percentage of fecal specimens from patients with diarrhea was HuCVs positive. Among inpatients, HuCVs positive rate was 17.5%. HuCVs detection was mainly distributed in 3 - 17 mouth-old children, in winter. All 11 strains belonged to NLV GII in which 6 strains GII-3, 2 strains GII-4 and 3 strains GII-7, and they shared 55.1% - 100% nucleotide identity. NLV GII-4 and GII-7 were identified in 2000, while NLV GII-3 and GII-7 in 2001. The preliminary estimate of HuCVs-attributed hospitalization rate was 3.6 per thousand. CONCLUSION: Human caliciviruses with different genotypes circulated among children in Lulong county with GII NLVs were the prevalent strains. The disease burden of HuCVs was second to rotavirus.

[The pathogenesis and treatment exploration of vocal cord paralysis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causes and effective treatment of vocal cord paralysis(VCP). METHOD: Sixty-five patients with VCP in our hospital in recent 10 years were analyzed. All the patients underwent examination by indirect laryngoscope, stroboscopy or electrolaryngostroboscopy, of which, 31 cases were operated by stiring arytenoid cartilage. RESULT: Fourteen cases with VCP were caused by neck and thoracic tumor; Nine cases were caused by infectations; sixteen cases were caused by neck, thoracic, abdominal openations; twelve cases were caused by trachea intubation; Three cases were caused by gastric intubation; Eleven cases were caused without obvious reason. All the symptoms of VCP were cured after treatment in 37 cases. The improvement rate of hoarseness was 58.46%. CONCLUSION: Patients with hoarseness should be routinely examinated by indirect laryngoscope, stroboscopy or electrolaryngostroboscopy. Arytenoid cartilage of patients with VCP should be stired by indirect laryngoscope or direct laryngoscope or self-retaining laryngoscope as early as possible.

3,5,7-trimethyl-1-azatricyclo[3.3.1.1(3,7)]decan-2-ylidene, an aminocarbene without pi conjugation.

3,5,7-trimethyl-1 -azatricyclo[3.3.1.1(3,7)]decan-2-ylidene, an aminocarbene without pi conjugation, has been generated from the corresponding tosylhydrazone salt. Addition of the carbene to alkenes is stereospecifically cis, thus showing that the reacting state is singlet. Competition studies reveal that the carbene is somewhat nucleophilic, implying a measure of overlap between the lone pair on nitrogen and the empty orbital on carbon. In turn, such overlap implies a pyramidal structure for the divalent carbon.

Effects of platelet-activating factor, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin-1alpha on the expression of apolipoprotein M in HepG2 cells.

Apolipoprotein M (apoM) is a recently discovered human apolipoprotein predominantly present in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in plasma, exclusively expressed in liver and in kidney. The function of apoM is yet unknown. The human apoM gene is located in the major histocompatibility complex class III region on chromosome 6. Because many genes located in this region are related to the immune response, we have investigated whether apoM might also be involved in the host inflammatory response. In this study we examined effects of the platelet-activating factor (PAF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha), and interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) on apoM expression in a hepatoblastoma cell line, HepG2 cells. PAF significantly enhanced the apoM mRNA levels and the secretion of apoM in HepG2 cell cultures. The enhancement of apoM secretion is seen at a low concentration of PAF (2 ng/ml), whereas a high concentration of PAF increases both the apoM mRNA levels and apoM secretion. Neither TNF-alpha nor IL-1alpha influenced apoM mRNA level and secretion. Furthermore, Lexipafant, a PAF-receptor (PAF-R) antagonist significantly suppressed the mRNA level and the secretion of apoM in HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Neither PAF nor Lexipafant influenced the mRNA levels and the secretion of apoA-I, apoB and apoE in HepG2 cells, indicating that the effects of PAF or Lexipafant on the apoM production on hepatic cells are selective for apoM. The cellular mechanism of the effects of PAF or Lexipafant on apoM metabolism requires further investigations.

MRI of lungs using partial liquid ventilation with water-in-perfluorocarbon emulsions.

A novel (1)H-MRI contrast modality for rat lungs has been developed using water-in-perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsions for partial liquid ventilation (PLV). The feasibility of the new ventilation protocol for (1)H-MRI studies of lungs has been demonstrated. (1)H-MR images of lungs have been obtained with sensitivity and spatial resolution higher than those of the (19)F-MRI of lungs previously reported. Diffusion-weighted MRI measurements of lungs showed that the results obtained are related to the pulmonary architecture and functional properties of lungs. Although the methodology needs further improvement and evaluation, it appears to have great potential in a wide range of new applications in the field of lung MRI, such as in vivo detection of lung cancer, emphysema, and allograft rejection following lung transplantation. The ability of this technique to achieve high-quality MR images of lungs, together with its technical simplicity, stability, and low cost, makes this method a promising imaging technique for the lungs.

In vivo detection of acute rat renal allograft rejection by MRI with USPIO particles.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for non-invasively detecting renal rejection was developed by monitoring the accumulation of macrophages labeled with dextran-coated ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) particles at the rat renal allografts during acute rejection. METHODS: Five groups of male rats with DA-->BN renal allografts and one group with BN-->BN renal isografts were investigated by MRI before, immediately after, and 24 hr after intravenous infusion with different doses of USPIO particles. All infusions were done on post-operative day 4. MRI experiments were carried out in a 4.7-Tesla instrument using a gradient echo sequence. RESULTS: MR signal intensity (MRSI) of the cortex was found to decrease with higher dosages of USPIO particles. In the absence of USPIO infusion, a decrease in MRSI was seen in the medulla region, presumably due to hemorrhage associated with renal graft rejection, while no significant change was observed in the cortex. The optimal dose of USPIO particles for visualizing rejection-associated changes in our rat kidney model appears to be 6 mg Fe/kg body weight. Iron staining results correlated with the MRSI data, indicating that the signal reduction in the MR images was due to the presence of iron. Immunohistochemical results indicated that USPIO particles were mostly taken up by infiltrating macrophages in the rejecting grafts. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that MRI with intravenous administration of dextran-coated USPIO particles appears to be a valuable and promising tool that can be used as a non-invasive and sensitive method to detect graft rejection in renal transplantation.

Serum CC-10 in inflammatory lung diseases.

BACKGROUND: Although Clara cell secretory protein (CC-10) has been ascribed an anti-inflammatory role in lung diseases, its precise role remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To further our understanding of the role of CC-10 in inflammatory lung diseases, CC-10 protein levels were measured. METHODS: Sera or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids were collected from patients with different inflammatory lung diseases including bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), sarcoidosis, idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP), chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP), pneumonia and lung cancer. Serum CC-10 concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using urinary protein-1 antibody. Then, the relationships between CC-10 concentrations and lung diseases were investigated. Immunohistochemistry was performed using lung biopsy samples. RESULTS: Increased serum CC-10 levels were recognized in IIP patients, while CC-10 levels were decreased in bronchial asthma patients and CEP patients. Immunohistochemistry revealed an aberrant expression in areas of fibrosis in IIP patients. Serum CC-10 concentrations were not associated with severity among IIP, COPD, and sarcoidosis. In contrast, serum CC-10 concentrations were correlated with FEV(1)/FVC in bronchial asthma patients. CONCLUSIONS: Although the number of patients was quite limited, these data provide new insights into the role of CC-10 in lung diseases, and the possibility that the CC-10 concentration in serum could be a new marker indicating the severity of bronchial asthma.
