Phosphine dendrimer-stabilized palladium nanoparticles, a highly active and recyclable catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction and hydrogenation.

[reaction: see text] Phosphine dendrimer-stabilized palladium nanoparticles were synthesized and found to be highly effective for Suzuki coupling reactions, affording good to excellent product yields, high turnover number (up to 65,000), and excellent reusability (up to 9 catalytic runs). Furthermore, these Pd nanoparticles are efficient and selective catalysts for hydrogenations.

Thermomorphic system with non-fluorous phase-tagged Ru(BINAP) catalyst: facile liquid/solid catalyst separation and application in asymmetric hydrogenation.

The thermomorphic BINAP derivative 1 tagged with long alkyl chains was prepared from (S)-5,5'-diamino BINAP and applied to Ru-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of beta-ketoesters under homogeneous conditions in 3:1 (v/v) ethanol/1,4-dioxane at 60 degrees C with high enantioselectivity (up to 98% ee). Results indicated that the Ru(1) catalyst was easily recovered by simple cooling and precipitation and could be used for at least four cycles without any loss of enantioselectivity.

Novel chiral dendritic diphosphine ligands for Rh(I)-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation: remarkable structural effects on catalytic properties.

[reaction: see text] A series of dendritic ligands with a chiral diphosphine located at the focal point have been synthesized through coupling of pyrphos 2 with Fréchet-type polyether dendron 3. The relationship between the primary structure of the dendrimer and its catalytic properties was established in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-acetamido cinnamic acid 4. A remarkable structural effect on catalytic activity was observed.

Remarkably diastereoselective synthesis of a chiral biphenyl diphosphine ligand and its application in asymmetric hydrogenation.

Essentially complete atropdiastereoselectivity was realized in the preparation of biaryl diphosphine dioxide by asymmetric intramolecular Ullmann coupling and oxidative coupling with central-to-axial chirality transfer. A bridged C(2)-symmetric biphenyl phosphine ligand possessing additional chiral centers on the linking unit of the biphenyl groups was synthesized. No resolution step was required for the preparation of the enantiomerically pure chiral ligand. These findings offer a general and practical tool for the development of previously uninvestigated atropdiastereomeric biaryl phosphine ligands. The diphosphine ligand was found to be highly effective in the asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha- and beta-ketoesters, 2-(6'-methoxy-2'-naphthyl)propenoic acid, beta-(acylamino)acrylates, and enol acetates.

Absolute configuration of monodentate phosphine ligand enantiomers on Cu(111).

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been employed to investigate the chirality of monophosphine compounds that are highly efficient chiral ligands in transition-metal-catalyzed organic transformations. The absolute configuration of 1-(2-diphenyphosphino-1-naphthyl)isoquinoline enantiomers with axial chirality was discriminated directly by the "marker" group, PPh(2) substitutes. Although the two enantiomer molecules adsorb on a Cu(111) surface and form well-defined (4 x 4) structures, the positions of PPh(2) substitutes in the molecular adlayers are different. The mirror symmetry between two adlayers is demonstrated. On the basis of STM results, structural models are proposed to interpret the chiral adsorption. The results presented here supply a straightforward method for axial chirality analysis in adsorbed adlayers by STM.

Polymer-supported chiral catalysts with positive support effects.

In this paper, we discuss the rational design of polymeric catalysts and the positive effect of polymer supports on the catalytic asymmetric reactions. The attachment of chiral catalysts to soluble polymers, particularly dendritic polymers, offered a potential combination of the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis.
