[Relationship between tree-ring chronology of Larix olgensis in Changbai Mountains and the climate change].

The relationship of larch (Larix olgensis) radial growth in Changbai Mountains with climate change was assessed by dendrochronological techniques including correlation functions and single-years analysis. The results showed that larch growth was sensitive to environmental change, and temperature was the primary factor affecting larch growth. The larch growing in high and low elevations had a significantly different response to temperature. In high elevation, larch growth was significant correlated to the mean temperature of June, but in low elevation, it had a more complicated relationship to the environment. Besides the mean temperature of April and May, the temperature of last June and September and the humid index of last September significantly correlated with the larch tree ring-width. Therefore, it was not the same relationship of the same tree species with different environmental gradients.

[Dynamics of forest landscape boundary at Changbai Mountain].

By using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) technology combined with field investigation and correlation analysis, this study was aimed to explore the dynamics of forest landscape boundary at Changbai Mountain, and to reveal the relationships among landscape fragmentation and changes of landscape boundary indices. The results showed that in the last 20 years or so, tundra decreased by 3694.8 hm2, spruce and fir forest reduced by 130482.03 hm2, and Korean pine-hardwood and mountain birch forest increased by 41610.4 hm2 and 669.78 hm2, respectively. The forest landscapes at Changbai Mountain tended to be more fragmented, and the shape of the landscape boundary became more complicated due to timber harvesting, forest cutting for cropping, and other human activities such as tourism. The changes of landscape shape index (LSI), contrast weighted edge density (CWED), total weighted edge length (TE-WGT) and weighted landscape shape index (LSI-WGT) could be used as good indicators for the degrees of forest landscape fragmentations, which was approved by correlation analysis among landscape fragmentation and changes of landscape boundary indices. The degree of human activities on landscape could be reflected by landscape shape index.

[Snow/wind damage in natural secondary forests in Liaodong mountainous regions of Liaoning Province].

In early spring of 2003, the secondary forests at the Qingyuan Experimental Forests (QEF) of the Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences suffered from the damage caused by snow and wind (snow/wind damage). This damage occurred at 800 m above sea level was the most serious one since 1949. In order to make clear its occurrence and process and to analyze its possible influences on the secondary forest system, comprehensive investigations were conducted soon after the snow/wind damage. The results showed that the occurrence of this damage was due to the special site conditions (higher sea level and steeper slopes) and air temperature, which suited the wet snow formation and the snow accumulation on trees after a large scale of precipitation. The more seriously damaged areas were those with the stands of Acer mono, Juglans mandshurica, Populus spp. and so on. The ratio of damaged trees was negatively correlated with stand density, soil depth and size class of diameter, and positively correlated with tree height. Based on these results, the likely influences of snow/wind damage, i. e., the happening of diseases and insect pests, the vegetation changing under forests, and the factors of habitat and dominant species in natural secondary forests were also discussed. It is significant that to do observation and basic research on damaged forests will provide reasonable strategies for management of natural secondary forests.

[Assessing forest ecosystem health I. Model, method, and index system].

Ecosystem health assessment is one of the main researches and urgent tasks of ecosystem science in 21st century. An operational definition on ecosystem health and an all-sided, simple, easy operational and standard index system, which are the foundation of assessment on ecosystem health, are necessary in obtaining a simple and applicable assessment theory and method of ecosystem health. Taking the Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest ecosystem as an example, an originally creative idea on ecosystem health was put forward in this paper based on the idea of mode ecosystem set and the idea of forest ecosystem health, together with its assessment. This creative idea can help understand what ecosystem health is. Finally, a formula was deduced based on a new effective health assessment method--health distance (HD), which is the first time to be brought forward in China. At the same time, aiming at it's characteristics by status understanding and material health questions, a health index system of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest ecosystem was put forward in this paper, which is a compound ecosystem based on the compound properties of nature, economy and society. It is concrete enough to measure sub-index, so it is the foundation to assess ecosystem health of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest in next researches.

[Structure characteristics and health distance assessment of various disturbed communities of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountains].

Through samples investigation, this paper analyzed and classified the community structures of overcutting original forests, secondary birch forests and larch plantation forest under different disturbances. At the same time, some indexes which can reflect the integrity and stability of stand structure were selected. Health Distance (HD) method, a new idea, was attempted to assess ecosystem health of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountains. The results showed that the health degree was in order of original broadleaved stand (0.14) < structure switched stand (0.23) < structure reserved stand (0.32) < structure destroyed stand (0.33) < heavy disturbed stand (0. 44) < secondary birch stand (0.53) < larch plantations (0.68). Hopefully, it will be a helpful reference on the restoration of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest and on the regional forestry sustainable development.

[Dynamics of soil fauna communities during succession process of secondary forests in Changbai Mountain].

The secondary succession of forest communities in Changbai Mountain might be divided into three stages, i.e., aggradation, transition, and steady states. The last stage will be arrived after about 100 years. At same time, the succession dynamics of various soil fauna groups were shown as: Saprophagous group was more abundant than other fauna groups, and its change trend was similar to the development of forest vegetation after disturbing; Phytophagous group had a higher amount during the prophase of forest succession, which was decreased with forest succession; the quantity of Carnivorous increased obviously after about 100-years-succession; and the composition of insect groups was that the unstable groups was more abundant when the forest was younger, but less abundant when the forest was older.

[GIS and RS determination of abiotic range of forest landscape distribution in Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve].

Based on landscape classification of remote sensing data and spatial expression of environmental factors, the abiotic ranges of forest landscape distribution in Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve were determined by using GIS. The results showed that the optimum elevation range of tundra, mountain birch forest, evergreen coniferous forest, and broad-leaved Korean pine forest were 1780-2212 m, 1705-1956 m, 1042-1625 m, and 823-1184 m, respectively. The corresponding optimum annual average temperature ranges were -4.75(-)-2.40 degrees C, -3.42(-)-2.07 degrees C, -1.49-1.39 degrees C, and 0.71-2.37 degrees C, and the optimum ranges of annual precipitation were 1034-1110 mm, 1014-1060 mm, 883-1017 mm, and 824-925 mm, respectively. The forest landscapes in Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve were mainly distributed in flat and gentle areas. This distribution pattern was closely related to aspect. Tundra was almost evenly present in various aspects. In northern and northwestern direction, most forest landscapes were distributed, including mountain birch forest, evergreen coniferous forest, broad-leaved Korean pine forest, aspen and Betula forest. Most larch forest was in favor of northeastern direction with small amount facing eastern and northern way. Sparse forest briefly occupied west aspect with some orienting in southwest, northwest and south, while all wind-thrown areas were facing west, southwest and northwest aspects.

[Approaches for assessing forest ecosystem health].

Assessment and indicator system become the key issues in the research on ecosystem health in 21st century. Assessing forest ecosystem health gradually attach much attention because it is an important component of terrestrial ecosystem. The definition, measurement, evaluation and its management had been discussed broadly, and some theories, assessing methods and frameworks had been proposed, which provides a new concept and a serial research approaches for dealing with the crisis of terrestrial ecosystems, even the environment problems in the world. Now, the common operational models for assessing forest ecosystem health do not exist owing to the manifold limitations. This paper discussed forest ecosystem health problem, and brought forward three preconditions for assessing forest ecosystem health: 1) a clear conceptual framework; 2) adequate data sets; 3) proper research and analysis techniques. The issues of three preconditions were discussed, and the possible approaches for the assessing research on forest ecosystem health, e.g., long-term studies and environment monitoring, space-for-time substation studies, e.g., history approaches, economics valuation and others were expariated.

This study was conducted in the riparian forest of Erdaobaihe River, and the flora of riparian plant communities on the northern slope of Changbai Mountain was researched and analyzed. There were 288 vascular plant species belonging to 169 genera and 68 families, among them, 26 plant species belonging to 16 genera and 11 families were fern, and 262 plant species belonging to 153 genera and 57 families were spermatophyte. Among spermatophyte, there were 9 gymnosperm species belonging to 6 genera and 3 families and 253 angiosperm species belonging to 147 genera and 54 families. Among angiosperm, there were 212 dicotyledonous species belonging to 118 genera and 45 families and 41 monocotyledonous species belonging to 29 genera and 9 families. All the results showed that there were abundant plant species in the riparian plant communities on the northern slope of Changbai Mountain. Analyses on the distribution area types of spermatophyte in the riparian communities showed that the distribution area types of genera and families were both abundant. For genus level, there were 9 distribution area types and 7 sub-types, and for family level, there were 6 distribution area types and 2 sub-types. The riparian plant communities had a temperate characteristic, and there were 117 genera, which were accounted for 76.5% of all the genera of spermatophyte, belonging to all the different temperate distribution types. In addition, the flora of riparian communities had a complex component, and had close relations with Tropical and East Asia distribution type, but few relations with Mediterranean distribution type. The results also showed that riparian zone could play an important role in biodiversity protection.

[Co-occurrence of soil fauna communities with changes in altitude on the northern slope of Changbai Mountain].

The co-occurrence of soil fauna communities at different altitudes may reflect at some extent the relationships among communities, their coexistence, and the replacement of species along the altitude gradient. The continuous or disjunctive distribution of different species along altitude gradient not only reflected the environment variation at altitude gradient, but also the biological and ecological spatiality as well as the adaptability of species. The northern slope of Changbai Moutain has not only a high diversity in soil fauna types and species, but also a high variation of diversity pattern along the altitude gradient, which is a perfect transect for the research of biodiversity and gradient patterns. From 550 m to 2,560 m on the northern slope of Changbai Mountain, twenty-two plots were investigated with an interval of 100 m in altitude. By using Jaccard index, the co-occurrence of soil fauna communities at different altitudes was analyzed. For the species of different life forms or for all the species as a whole, the co-occurrence of soil faunae between neighboring communities was the highest, except for that between different soil fauna types. The peak and valley values of the co-occurrence of soil fauna communities along altitude gradient were matched with their gradient patterns, and the co-occurrence of soil faunae at different layers or all of the soil fauna communities were decreased with increasing altitude difference.

[Minimum sampling area and species richness of riparian community in erdaobaihe forested watershed].

Riparian zone is an important component of small forested watershed. Due to the integrate effects of stream water and edge effect, there are obvious difference in composition, structure, and distribution pattern between riparian community and non-riparian community. Community minimum sampling areas are also different. In this study, minimum sampling areas of riparian community in original broad-leaved and Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountain were studied by using species-area curve. At the same time, species richness of riparian community was discussed. The results showed that the minimum sampling areas of riparian plant community were smaller than those of the non-riparian community. According to the original broad-leaved and Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountain, the average community minimum sampling areas in riparian zone of three plots including 60%, 80%, and 90% of community species were about 80 m2, 180 m2, and 320 m2, respectively. And then, those of forest community were about 260 m2, 380 m2, and 480 m2 correspondingly. The results also showed that the species richness of riparian community was higher than that of non-riparian community.
