Lasers in a hospital-based dental practice.

Lasers have been shown to be excellent additions to the dental armamentarium. When used on medically compromised patients in a hospital-based setting or private practice setting sufficiently equipped to deal with potential medical emergencies, lasers can make treatment of these patients much simpler and safer. As more uses are found for dental lasers and more wavelengths are developed for dentistry, lasers will become an increasingly useful tool for the hospital dental practice.

Laser treatment of orthodontically induced gingival hyperplasia.

Several studies have shown that gingivitis is common in children and adolescents. Introduction of orthodontic devices may exacerbate the gingival inflammation. Orthodontically induced gingival hyperplasia in adolescents, its etiology, and treatment alternatives are discussed. Three instances in which laser therapy was used are described.

Laser treatment as an adjunct to removable prosthetic care.

Five cases have been presented in which dental lasers were used as adjuncts to removable prosthetic care. As dental laser technology advances, there will be more opportunities for lasers to play a significant role in delivery of superior care in every area of dentistry. All five procedures described here can be performed in a more conventional manner, without laser treatment. However, laser treatment is the preferred method for these procedures. As lasers become more common in dental offices, use of lasers for these procedures will become the standard of care. The patients in these cases were treated with specific wavelengths of lasers, i.e. CO2 or Nd:YAG. This is not meant as an endorsement of one wavelength over another, or of one manufacturer over another. Used properly, most dental lasers currently on the market can successfully perform these treatments.
