[The characteristics of operator activity in a sensorially enriched environment].

The mechanism of Ukhtomskiĭ's dominant was used to improve operator's performance activity. Recognition of visual images--obscured Arabic numerals--in a sensorially rich environment (classic or rock music records) turned to be more successful: time of the task was reduced and the probability of correct identification increased. A reverse U-shaped dependence between the intensity of music and identification was stated. Repetition of music fragments at a constant value marred the positive effect.

Regional difference in the histamine-elicited accumulation of cyclic AMP in rabbit cerebral cortex with a cortical dominant focus.

A cortical dominant focus resulting in dominant spontaneous and stimulus-evoked flexions of the contralateral forelimb was formed by repeated, unilateral application of anodal current to the motor cortex in rabbits. Histamine-elicited accumulation of cyclic AMP was higher in cortical slices including the polarized point than in those of the contralateral area.

[Neuron-glia interrelations in the cerebral cortex of rabbits in the presence of a polarization dominant].

Neurochemical and morphological studies of individual cellular structures of different cortical layers suggest that the formation of "polarization" dominant is due to the activity of the V cortical layer. Primary involvement of interneurones and neuroglia has been revealed in the organization of the dominant trace effect and in processes related to memory. Comparison of electrophysiological and morphological characteristics of the "polarization" dominant shows that the reorganization of summary electrical activity of the neocortex tending to the predominance of delta-frequencies in the power spectrum and enhancement of biopotentials correlation within this frequency range, are determined by processes taking place in lower cortical layers.

Electrical activity of cerebral cortex in the cat during closure of simple form of a temporary connection.

The closure of a simple form of temporary connection of the summation reflex type was studied by combining light flashes with subthreshold electrical stimulation of the cortical site of representation of the right forelimb in the cat. Summation, i.e., forepaw flexion, occurred both when two subthreshold stimuli were applied simultaneously and when there was a short (tens of milliseconds) interval between the stimuli. The sequence of stimulus presentation (current + light or light + current) was immaterial. During summation there occurred changes in the configuration of the direct cortical response recorded at a distance of 2-3 mm from the stimulation site. Neurophysiological analysis of the electrical correlates of establishment of the simple form of temporary connection (study of neuronal activity, the effect of some pharmacological agents, testing by paired stimuli) suggests that the mechanism of closure under study is dependent on induction relations manifested by the enhancement of phasic changes in excitatory 2nd inhibitory processes. When the current + light combination was used, two phases of neural activity were characteristic: inhibition and a subsequent rebound. With the light + current combination, these phases were preceded by a phase of primary excitation.

Coherence analysis of the electrical activity of the rabbit brain in the presence of a hunger dominant.

A hunger dominant was created in rabbits deprived of food for 24 hours. The presence of summations was judged on the basis of the appearance in the response to sound of swallowing or chewing movements. When a hunger dominant is created, the coherence (Coh) of the electrical activity of the frontal, sensorimotor, and parietal areas of the cerebral cortex increases, especially in the range of the delta and theta frequencies. Variously directed coherence of the potentials of the lateral (LH), middle (VmH) hypothalamus and the cortex is established, the Coh of the potentials of the LH and cortex decreases, and of the VmH and the cortex, by contrast, increases. A definite mosaic of the coherence connections of the electrical processes of the hypothalamus appears; the Coh of the potentials of the LH and VmH increases, and the Coh between the potentials of the medial and lateral preoptic areas decreases.

The motivational dominant in goal-directed behavior.

Results of experimental studies on discontinuation of the motivational dominants thirst and hunger and the "polarization" motor dominant, taken together with a theoretical analysis of the development of types I and II conditioned reflexes, lead to the conclusion that discontinuation of the motivational dominant plays a key role in organization goal-directed behavior. The activation of reciprocal connections between the appropriate centers provides a basis for the performance of goal-directed behavior.

Recognition of visual images in a rich sensory environment: musical accompaniment.

Human recognition of visual images in the form of Arabic numerals affected by "noise" showed a reduction in the time needed for recognition and an increase in the probability of making a correct identification in a rich sensory environment (use of classical or rock music). There was no direct relationship between the volume of the music and its positive effect on the recognition of visual images. The greatest changes in the recognition time and quality of correct recognition occurred at specific volume levels for both classical and rock music, and there were individual differences. The efficiency of image recognition decreased when the same musical fragments were used again with the same volume. The data are interpreted as a manifestation of the dominant.
