Predictable, cyclic patterns of activity were obtained from 30 male rats. Seventeen of these were subjected to physical immobilization just as they were approaching their period of peak activity and thirteen animals were restrained during the inactive phase of their cycle. Eight animals were found to have gastric erosions following the immobilization. All of these came from the group immobilized during the time they would have been in the active phase of their particular cycle.
Pregnant rats were either unmanipulated or were handled for 10 minutes three times daily throughout pregnancy. Offspring remained with their natural mothers or were crossfostered within and between experimental and control groups. When tested at 45 and 100 days of age, the offspring of handled mothers were found to be generally less emotional than the controls.
Male, medical and graduate students were subjected to a non-discriminated avoidance regimen with shock-shock and response-shock intervals of 10 sec. Using a yoked-chair procedure it was found that acquisition of the button-pressing avoidance response was influenced by the social environment in which the conditioning occurred. There was a significantly greater number of "learners" among subjects conditioned individually than among those exposed to the conditioning procedures in the presence of a second person.
