[Minimycetomas caused by N. brasiliensis. Histological study of 13 cases].

We present a preliminary communication of the histological findings in 16 cases of mini-mycetoma by N. brasiliensis. We found little PAS positive granules, fully evident with the Gram stain, localized at the center of the microabscesses. Ten cases showed Russell bodies, 33% showed multinucleated giant cells and the 50%, epithelioid cells. All cases showed abundant capillary vessels and intense fibrosis.

Prolongation of rat gestation time by unsaturated fatty acids.

Arachidonic, linoleic, linolenic, and oleic acids, administered to Sprague-Dawley rats on Days 20 and 21 of gestation prolonged the gestation time; neither the duration parturition, parturitional bleeding, nor the perinatal mortality rate was affected. Since arachidonic acid is the obligatory precursor of prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha, currently believed to be associated with the initiation of labor, and polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit the cell-mediated immune response in vivo, the precise role of prostaglandins and their precursors in the initiation of parturition must be critically examined.

[Scintigraphy with thallium chloride in a case of clear cell sarcoma of the tendons and aponeurosis].

Clear cell sarcoma of the soft parts (CCSSP) is a rare and highly malignant tumor. This is a case report of a 31 years old woman who presented with a tumor in the internal face of left thigh. The tumor biopsy was suggestive of a possible malignant tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath (malignant schwannoma). Biochemical analyses, computed tomography and magnetic resonance were performed and reported a sarcoma of soft parts (CCSSP) without abnormal inguinal lymph nodes. With this diagnostic suspicion, the patient was sent to the Nuclear Medicine Service of our center where a 201Thallium scintigraphy study was performed. In this study, it showed the primary tumor together with a hot spot in the homolateral inguinal region, suggestive of the presence of a metastastic lymph node. This finding would change the surgical attitude in the patient, including inguinal lymphadenectomy. The post-surgical histological study confirmed a clear cell sarcoma of soft parts (CCSSP) with a metastatic inguinal lymph node.

[Dermatosis cinecienta. A clinico-pathological study of 20 patients (1989-1990)].

Ashen dermatosis (D.C.), or dyschromic perstans erythema, is a chronic dermatosis, which is asymptomatic and practically exclusive in Latin-American countries. Its clinical characteristics have been well defined (blue-gray patches), as well as its nonspecific histopathologic patterns; its etiology is unknown. This paper studies 20 patients suffering from ashen dermatitis. There was a majority of female patients, the dermatosis was disseminated, bilateral and symmetric. It is different from pigmented lichen although the histopathologic patterns is similar.

[Tinea manuum. Epidemiological and mycological data on 366 cases].

Epidemiological an mycological data of a 30 years long study on 366 cases of tinea manuum. A sudden raise on the last five years (249 cases). The mycosis is caused by T. rubrum (86%), mostly affects men (70%) among 11 and 40 years of age, on one hand (61%) and seldom both (21%). The course last 2 years in average. The KOH examination confirms the diagnosis (93.5%).

[Onychomycosis. Clinico-epidemiological mycological and therapeutic aspects].

Onychomycosis is the most frequent cause of nail disease. Dermatophytic and Candida onychomycosis have a similar frequency (54% and 45%), while only in 1% they are caused by molds. Tinea unguium equally affects both sexes and is mainly observed in the first toenail. T. rubrum is the fungus responsible in 87% of dermatophytosis. The ungual candidosis is three times more frequent on the hands in women and is due to C. albicans in 99% of the cases. Both types of onychomycosis are observed in children. Clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis based on direct KOH examination. Treatment includes the removal of the infested keratin and use of local or systemic antimycotics, such as griseofulvin, ketoconazole and itraconazole.

[Generalized sporotrichosis. Study of a Mexican case treated with amphotericin B and ketoconazole].

A case of deep sporotrichosis with cutaneous, articular, (...) and osseous lesions was observed in a Mexican patient following a beesting. The disease was associated with a complex pathological background namely diabetes. The pathogenic fungus Sporothrix schenckii was isolated in pure culture. The mycosis was successfully treated by amphotericin B and ketoconazole. Persisting enzymatic impairment was observed due to the sporotrichosis and/or underlying diseases.
