Power take-off injuries.

Power take-off injuries are uncommon, but serious and potentially fatal. Seven cases are reported demonstrating the violent trauma that can be incurred. The danger associated with use of machines with this and other power equipment is emphasized. Safety shields should be improved, and operators educated about the importance of retaining the shields and using machinery properly at all times.

Residua of Guillain-Barré Polyneuritis in Children.

A study of the records from the period 1950 to 1970 at the Elizabethtown Hospital for Children and Youth produced twelve patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome. These patients were contracted in 1975-76 and each was personally examined. Ten were found to have residual weakness but in several instances the weakness was so mild the patient was unaware of it. Good correlations were found between muscle examinations during the acute recovery period and at final follow-up. Six patients had undergone various surgical procedures, and all of them thought they had benefited.

Interferon responsiveness of rabbit synovial cells and chondrocytes.

Rabbit synovial cells (SC), articular chondrocytes (AC), and epiphyseal (EC) chondrocytes were grown in vitro. A portion of the spectrum of human pathogenic viruses infective for the cells was determined. Responses of the cells to different viruses or a chemical inducer of interferon varied, with EC responding vigorously and with high titers, AC responding only to chemical inducer and influenza virus, and SC producing no detectable interferon. All cells supported prolonged growth of influenza virus without showing microscopic cytopathology.
