Effect of degree of separation of visual-auditory stimulus and eye position upon spatial interaction of vision and audition.

Subjects were exposed to a visual and to an auditory stimulus that differed spatially in laterality of origin. The subjects were observed for visual biasing of auditory localization (the momentary influence of a light on the spatially perceived location of a simultaneously presented sound) and for auditory aftereffect (a change in perceived location of a sound that persists over time and is measured after termination of the visual stimulus). A significant effect of visual stimulation on auditory localization was found only with the measure of bias. Bias was tested as a function of degree of visual-auditory separation (10/20/30 degrees), eye position (straight-ahead/visual stimulus fixation), and position of visual stimulus relative to auditory stimulus (left/right). Only eye position proved statistically significant; straight-ahead eye position induced more bias than did fixation of the visual stimulus.

Two remarkable events in the field of intraocular foreign body: (1) The reversal of siderosis bulbi. (2) The spontaneous extrusion of an intraocular copper foreign body.

Two unusual events concerning intraocular foreign bodies are presented. The first patient had an occult or unsuspected intraocular foreign body. He showed iridoplegia with mydriasis, siderosis iridis, and an intraocular piece of iron lying posteriorly near the retina. The foreign body was removed and the patient regained normal iris color and pupillary activity. His vision remains 20/15 six years postoperatively dispite ensuing retinal detachment one year after removal of the foreign body. The second patient was a young boy injured by a blasting cap explosion. He lost one eye from the injury and had a piece of intraocular brass in his left eye. In spite of the development of chalcosis and a mature cataract the lens gradually shrank in the pupillary space permitting a clear aphakic area and 20/25 vision. The brass fragment migrated forward and inferiorly and was finally extruded under the conjunctiva five years later, where it was removed and chemically analyzed by x-ray diffraction.

Total hip replacement as a salvage in traumatic lesions about the hip.

One hundred and eight total hip replacements have been accomplished in an attempt to salvage a problem caused by trauma. Many times, patients with traumatic arthritic problems have a quick transition from a normal existence to a severe disability. They may not have had the ability physically or mentally to handle this disability seen in patients with rheumatoid disease or idiopathic osteoarthritis. It has been shown that these patients with total joint replacement can be rehabilitated to almost a normal degree of function. Complications occur, but with careful planning and execution, they can be held to a minimum. In the long run, a high incidence of degenerative disease is seen in these problems. The primary procedure should not be done so as to jeopardize a secondary reconstruction.
