Iodine saturation of Roma neonates in prague is not at an optimum level.

AIM: The purpose of our study was to determine urinary iodine as an indicator of iodine supplementation in Roma (Gypsy) neonates compared to majority population neonates. METHODS: The groups studied were formed by 30 full-term Roma neonates and 151 majority population neonates. Iodine was determined from samples of urine collected on the 4th day after delivery, after alkaline ashing, using the Sandell-Kolthoff method. RESULTS: The median of urinary iodine in Roma neonates was 92.15 microg/l urine and in neonates from majority population mothers it was 109.20 microg/l urine. The mean of urinary iodine in Roma neonates was 114.55 microg/l urine (SD 71.68 microg/l) and in neonates from majority population mothers it was 141.86 microg/l urine (SD 87.42 microg/l). The difference was not statistically significant. Majority population mothers more frequently consumed nutrition supplements containing iodine as well as fish. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to older data, supplementation of neonates with iodine is higher. However, it does not reach optimum levels. The urinary iodine median in Roma neonates lies in the mild iodine deficiency band.

[The volumes of the thyroid gland in adults aged 18-65 years in the Czech Republic--determination of the norms].

OBJECTIVE: In the areas with moderate iodine deficit the sonographic examination of thyroid gland is a precious method of precise determination of its volume. The objective of the work was the sonographic examination of males and females aged 18-65 years and to determine the norms of the volumes of thyroid gland. METHODS AND RESULTS: In total, by random sampling, there were sonographically examined 3 416 adults in 11 areas of the Czech Republic; there was chosen a set of 971 females and 681 males whose iodinuria level in first morning urine sample was equal or higher than 100 microg/l. This set was divided according to sex and into the age categories in 5-year interval. The measurement of 3 dimensions of the thyroid gland was determined by Medison-Kretz SA 600 sonographic device with the use of 7.5 MHz linear probe for the depth and width measurement and 3.5 MHz probe was used for the lengths measurement. The volume was determined for each lobe individually using Brunn's formula: V (ml) = 0.479 x length x depth x width. Our results imply the age-related increase of the volume of thyroid gland at both sexes (F-ratio = 1.99, p < 0.0001). At men and women the volume of thyroid gland fluently increases to the 30th year equally, from 30 years to 55 years it increases more rapidly in men while in women there is observed a moderate plateau. Further increase of the volume of thyroid gland is equally fluent from the age of 55 years. CONCLUSION: We managed to determine first own norms of the volumes of thyroid gland for men and women aged 18-65 years in the Czech Republic in five-year age categories. In terms of practical use we recommend 90th percentile as a limit for the evaluation of upper limit of thyroid gland and the 10th percentile for the evaluation of lower limit of the volume of thyroid gland.

[Changes in iodine supply in adult Czech population after iodine deficit eradication and causes. Random study of adults in two regions in the Czech republic with in between period of 5 years].

INTRODUCTION: By iodine, similar to many other elements that are important for human body, the daily intake has some limitations. Neither deficiency, nor surplus are required. In the second half of the nineties in the 20th century, iodine deficiency in Czech republic could have been eradicated to a great extent. However, changes in iodine supply in population still have to be monitored, looking for the causes in nutrition. AIM: To monitor the changes in ioduria in adult population and search for causes of these changes in dietary habits. METHODS: In 1999, 2000, 2004 and 2005, urinary iodine was determined in randomly selected population of 1139 adults aged 18 to 65, domiciled in the regions Jablonec nad Nisou or Príbram. The measurement of iodine was based on alcaline ashing of urine specimens preceding Sandell-Koldhoff reaction. The information about possible nutrition sources of iodine (seafood, milk, salt, eggs, mineral water) was found out through questionnaires and controlled interviews. RESULTS: During the respective 5 years, significant increase of the mean level of urinary iodine from 117 +/- 3.09 microg/l to 193 +/- 8.17 microg/l occured. In both regions, significant increased frequency of supernormal values of urinary iodine (over 300 microg/l) occured: from 0% to 13-18%. However, the changes in the region Jablonec nad Nisou were more positive than in the other one: decrease of below-normal urinary iodine concentration (50 to 99 microg/l) from 43% to 22% in the region Jablonec nad Nisou was found, while the number of below-normal urinary iodine concentration in the other region increased from 24% to 33% and the number of adults with optimum iodine concentration has also decreased (from 75% to 53%). Nutrition changes of possible influence on the urinary iodine concentration (seafood, milk, eggs, salt, mineral water with iodine) were observed and significant increase in consumption of eggs, mineral water with iodine and milk was found out. The consumption of mineral water with iodine has increased from 5% to 10% in Jablonec nad Nisou and from 15% to 26% in Príbram. Multi-factor analysis of four major nutrition sources of iodine (consumption of milk, seafood, eggs and salt) has proven the biggest influence of regular egg and milk consumption on urinary iodine concentration in adults.

[Selenium deficiency of west Bohemia population].

To estimate status and intake of selenium in inhabitants of the most Western region of the Czech Republic (Cheb region) 241 serum, 404 urine and 30 hair samples from randomly selected persons in the age between 6 and 65 years is performed. Serum and hair samples were analysed by means of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), while Se in urines was detected by means of fluorimetry. Urine iodine was determined in the same group by Sandell-Kolthoff method for the possibility to detect concomitant Se and I deficiency and/or correlations between these two essential trace elements necessary for metabolism of thyroid hormones. Average values of Se indexes are low (55.4 +/- 13.8 microg Se/L serum; 15.4 +/- 5.7 microg Se/L urine; 13.6 +/- 6.0 microg Se/g creatinine; 0.268 +/- 0.051 microg Se/g hair) and prove Se deficiency in the searched population. Statistical evaluation of Se in subgroups of boys, girls, men and women proved significant differences as far as age is concerned, gender differences were found only between boys and girls. Some significant and highly significant differences were found also in subgroups according age and gender (males and females in the age of 6, 10, 13, 18-35, 36-49 and 50-65 years). On the other hand, urine iodine average value (126 +/- 65 microg/L) is on the lower optimum level. By the use of correlation analysis, slight but significant correlations were found between Se and I in urine and some of thyroid hormone parameters and their influence on the organism.

[Iodine and thyroid hormones].

In the years 1995-2002, a survey was conducted involving 5 263 individuals (2 276 males, 2 987 females) between the ages of 6-98. They were selected randomly from the central registery in 7 counties in the Czech Republic. The level of urinary iodine in these individuals was established using the Sandell-Kolthoff rection which was preceded by the alkaline ashing of the samples as follows: (n = 5 263), thyroglobulin (TG, n = 3 902), thyrotropin(TSH, n = 5 162) freee thyroxin (fT4, n = 5 160) and free triiodothyronine (fT3, n = 4 931), where the thyroid hormones, TSH, and TG were determined in serum using immunoassays. The individuals were divided into groups according to their iodine deficiency, i.e. to the group with urinary iodine concentration < 50, 50-100, 100-200, and > 200 microg I/l of urine. In these groups the mean and median of TG, TSH, fT4, and fT3 were calculated. The means and medians of TG and fT4 increased with the decrease of urinary iodine, and conversely TSH decreased with the decrease of urinary iodine. The values of fT3 were relatively unaffected by the changes in the concentrations of urinary iodine. All the hormonal changes fell into the normal reference rang. It is evident from our results that in cases iodine deficiency in the organism, there is a tendency to raise the sensitivity thyrocytes to TSH stimulation rather than a rise in the concentration of circulating TSH. Of all the hormones observed, thyroglobulin was the best indicator of iodine retention in the organism.

How short-term transdermal treatment of men with 7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone influence thyroid function.

Dehydroepiandrosterone may influence thyroid function. Its metabolite, 7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone, a precursor of immunomodulatory 7-hydroxylated metabolites and thermogenic agent, belongs to candidates of steroid replacement therapy. The question was addressed whether its application does influence laboratory parameters of thyroid function. 7-Oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone in the form of emulgel, 25 mg/day, was applied transdermally to 21 healthy men for 8 consecutive days. Morning blood was collected before the treatment (Day 0, Stage 1), during treatment (Day 5, Stage 2), on the first day after the last administration (Day 9, Stage 3), one week (Day 16, Stage 4), and 9 weeks (Day 72, Stage 5) after treatment termination. The levels of thyrotropin, free thyroxine and triiodothyronine, dehydroepiandrosterone, its sulfate and its 7-hydroxyepimers were measured. The changes were evaluated by analysis of variance and correlation analysis. During treatment a significant rise of 7beta-hydroxy-dehydroepiandrosterone was observed, which persisted 1 week after treatment termination. No changes were observed in dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulfate. Though a slight but significant rise of TSH and of both thyroid hormones occurred during treatment, its levels soon returned to the basal values. It was concluded that treatment of 7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone affects the thyroid parameters only temporarily and that it provides a considerable persistent amount of 7beta-hydroxy-dehydroepiandrosterone.

The computer modelling of human TRH receptor, TRH and TRH-like peptides.

The aim of this work was to verify the possibility of interactions between the human TRH receptor (an integral membrane protein which belongs to family 1 of G-protein coupled receptors) and TRH-like peptides presented in the prostate gland. These peptides are characterized by substitution of basic amino acid histidine (related to authentic TRH) for neutral or acidic amino acid, such as glutamic acid, phenylalanine, glutamine or tyrosine. The physiological function of TRH-like peptides in peripheral tissues is not precisely known. However, according to our recent experiments, we assume the existence of a local hormonal network formed by TRH-like peptides and TSH in the prostate gland. The network can be associated with circulating thyroid and steroid hormones, and may represent a new regulatory mechanism influencing the proliferative ability of prostatic tissue. A similar network of authentic TRH and TSH was already found in the gastrointestinal tract. The experimentally determined 3D-structures of human TRH receptor (hTRHr) and TRH-like peptides are not available. From this point of view we used de novo modeling procedures of G-protein coupled receptors on an automated protein modeling server used at the Glaxo Wellcome Experimental Research (Geneva, Switzerland). 3D-structures of TRH-like peptides were determined with a computer program CORINA (written by the team of J. Gasteiger, Computer-Chemie-Centrum and Institute for Organic Chemistry, University of Erlangen-Nurenberg, Germany). The generated PDB files with 3D-coordinates were visualized with Swiss-Pdb Viewer Release 3.51 (Glaxo Wellcome). From recent results it is evident that polar amino acids belonging to the extracellular terminus of hTRHr transmembrane regions can participate in interactions between TRH and hTRHr. There is no direct evidence that TRH-like peptides interact with the presented hTRHr model. On the contrary, with respect to the similar 3D-shape and the identity of terminal amino acids, it appears that these interactions are highly probable as well as the nearly 100 % cross-reactions between TRH or TRH-like peptides and antibody specific against authentic TRH. Closed terminal amino acids (pyroglutamic acid and proline-amide) of TRH or TRH-like peptides are important for these interactions. Desamido-TRH or glutamyl metabolites will be repelled by the negative potential of ASP195 (E: D93) and GLU298 (G: E137).

Thyroid autoantibodies and their clinical relevance in young adults with type 1 diabetes during the first 12 yr after diabetes onset.

In order to obtain prospective data on occurrence of thyroid autoantibodies [against thyroid peroxidase (antiTPO) and against thyroglobulin (antiTgl)] and their clinical relevance, we followed up on 109 young adults with Type 1 diabetes for 12 yr after diabetes onset. The patients were divided into subgroup I [positivity of both thyroid autoantibodies (T-Ab); 25%, women predominantly], subgroup II (isolated antiTPO positivity only, 26%, men and women equally) and subgroup III (thyroid autoimmunity not present, 49%, men mainly). Cumulative incidence of T-Ab during the 12 yr of follow-up was 51% with predominance of women over men (65% vs 38%, p<0.01). At the time of the first T-Ab detection, an ultrasonography pattern of a hypoechogenic thyroid gland was noted in 59% of subgroup I patients and in 25% of subgroup II patients (p<0.05). At the same time, TSH>4.5 mlU/I was shown in 30 and 7% of patients of subgroups I and II, respectively (p<0.05). In the patients with the repeated positivity of both T-Ab (subgroup I) subclinical hypothyroidism developed in all patients within 4 yr after the first detection of T-Ab. On the contrary, the clinical course in patients with isolated antiTPO positivity (subgroup II) was milder with 11% developing subclinical hypothyroidism within 4 yr after the first antiTPO detection (p<0.001). The data shed new light on the relative diagnostic value of thyroid antibodies, ultrasonography and functional examination for an early detection of thyroid autoimmunity of adult diabetic patients.

[Metformin has a positive effect on disorders of carbohydrate metabolism in long-term care with low doses of prednisone].

BACKGROUND: The influence of long-term, low doses of prednison administration (< 0.3 mg/kg/day) on glucoregulation and glucose tolerance was studied in 20 female patients (15-20 yrs), including verification of possibility to correct the impairment of glucose tolerance (IGT) by metformin (M). METHODS AND RESULTS: During prednison treatment, we found typical signs of insulin resistance manifestation: HOMAIR 3.55 (5.13), blood insulin/glucose ratio 3.8 (5.84), QUICKI 0.61 (0.124). These were associated with higher Langerhans (L.) islets hormone secretion detected under basal conditions as well as after bolus of 5 g arginine chloride. However, detailed analysis of hormone secretion ratios revealed distinct signs of L. islets function impairment and subcompensation. Specifically, low ratio C peptide/proinsulin and C peptide/glucagon were characteristicaly observed. Six months of M. administration (1000 mg/day) had a beneficial effect on glucose metabolisms deviations as indicated by the following: insulin resistance decreased (HOMAIR 1.96 (1.60), insulin/glucose ratio 2.34 (1.52), QUICKI increased at 0.699 (0.238)). At the same time we found a decrease in the basal levels of insulin, proinsulin, glucagon, C peptide and amyline, and AUC proinsulin and glucagon as well. HOMAsecretion decreased from an initial value of 389 (376) to 207 (119). CONCLUSIONS: Judging by the new hormonal secretion ratios, the L. islets' function following M. treatment substantially improved. From the clinical point of view, it is important to note that M. was tolerated very well. No patient interrupted the follow up because of M. intolerance. IGT in the whole group normalised, in spite of the fact that no accent was put on the regime, diet including. The 90% of lactate values did not exceed 1.7 mmol/l. Based on the results, we may conclude that M. has a beneficial effect on long-term, low doses of glucocorticoid-related (induced) glucose metabolism impairment, and therefore, M. administration could be recommended, particularly in the situations with higher levels of glycosylated hemoglobin.

TRH-like peptides in prostate gland and other tissues.

This minireview is aimed to recapitulate the occurrence of TRH-like peptides in the prostate gland and other tissues and to discuss their known functions in the organism. The hypothalamic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) was the first chemically defined hypophyseotropic hormone with the primary structure pGLU-HIS-PRO.NH2. However, the presence of extrahypothalamic TRH-immunoreactive peptides was reported in peripheral tissues including the gastrointestinal tract, placenta, neural tissues, male reproductive system and certain endocrine tissues. It was supposed that this TRH immunoreactivity can partially originate from TRH-homologous peptides and that these peptides have significant cross-reactions with the antibody specific against authentic TRH. This assumption was confirmed by the identification of prostatic TRH immunoreactivity as pyroGLU-GLU-PRO.NH2 using fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and gas phase sequence analysis. TRH-like peptides are characterized by substitution of the basic amino acid histidine (related to authentic TRH) for neutral or acidic amino acids, such as glutamic acid, phenylalanine, glutamine or tyrosine. The physiological role of TRH-like peptides in peripheral tissues is not precisely known, but they possess a C-terminal amide group which is characteristic for many biologically active peptides. The occurrence of these peptides in the male reproductive system can influence male fertility. They are also closely related to circulating thyroid and steroid hormones. There might be an important connection of TRH-like peptides to the prostatic local autocrine/paracrine network mediated by extrahypothalamic TRH immunoreactivity corresponding to TRH-like peptides and extrapituitary thyrotropin (TSH) immunoreactivity also found in the prostatic tissue. A similar system of intraepithelial lymphocyte hormonal regulation due to the local paracrine network of TRH/TSH has been described in the gastrointestinal tract. The local network of TRH-like peptides/TSH may be involved in possible regulation of prostatic growth.

Analysis of relations between serum levels of epitestosterone, estradiol, testosterone, IGF-1 and prostatic specific antigen in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and carcinoma of the prostate.

Epitestosterone competes with testosterone for androgen receptors and inhibits several enzymes of steroidogenesis. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) stimulate the growth of prostate cells and directly activate androgen receptors in prostatic tumor cell lines. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decreases the affinity of IGF-binding protein-3. The samples were collected from 71 patients suffering from various diseases of the prostate (56 patients without prostate cancer but with benign prostatic hyperplasia and 15 patients with prostate cancer). Correlations between age and IGF-1 (r = -0.281, p<0.05), age and serum epitestosterone (r = -0.261, p<0.05), estradiol and testosterone (r = 0.367, p<0.01), and between estradiol and epitestosterone (r = -0.414, p<0.001) were found. After age adjustment, IGF-I correlated with epitestosterone (r = -0.277, p<0.05). The age correlated positively with PSA (r = 0.286, p<0.05) and negatively with IGF-1 (r = -0.377, p<0.01) in partial correlations. PSA levels were higher in patients with prostate cancer (p<0.00001). Epitestosterone, which is negatively correlating with estradiol and IGF-1, may modulate the development of prostate diseases.

[Follow-up study of iodine status in neonates and their mothers in 2 regions of the Czech Republic after a 3-year intervention].

BACKGROUND: The worldwide elimination of iodine deficiency is at present one of the priorities of WHO. The highest risk group with regard to sequelae of inadequate iodine supplies are even in case of a milder iodine deficiency, human foetuses during the foetal and early infantile period (endemic cognitive disorder). An epidemiological survey in three areas of the Czech Republic (Prague, Príbram, Ustí n. Labem) in 1993-95 in 5-day old infants and their mothers provided evidence of a medium grade iodine deficiency in Prague and the Príbram area. The objective of the epidemiological check-up survey of ioduria of neonates in 1997 (Prague, Príbram) is the evaluation of the success of preventive provisions which were implemented for a period and educational activities, recommendations to take 100 micrograms iodine to all pregnant and lactating mothers, fortification of infant foods with iodine, increasing and improving the standard of iodine in table salt (27 +/- 7 mg 1/kg salt as potassium iodate). METHODS AND RESULTS: In 1997 the ioduria of two groups of full-term neonates and their mothers was assessed on the fifth day after delivery. Fifty neonates and their mothers were from Prague, 50 from Príbram. Ioduria was assessed in morning urine samples by the method of Ing. Bílek (National list of laboratory items MZ, SLP type N-SPA-BANO, code Joduria (photometry), key BIAAA, published in 1997). The results were statistically computed using Bartlett's chi-aquare and Kruskalov-Vallis' H test and Student's t-test. The median of ioduria in Prague neonates was 7.93 micrograms 1/100 ml and in Príbram neonates 7.83 micrograms 1/100 ml urine. The median values of maternal ioduria were 5.90 micrograms 1/100 ml in Prague and 7.23 micrograms 1/100 ml urine in Príbram. CONCLUSIONS: The median ioduria values of neonates from two areas (Prague and Príbram), previously (93-94) in the zone of medium iodine deficiency, increased significantly during three years of intervention and in 1997 they reached normal levels of ioduria for the given age group.

Status of magnesium, selenium and iodine saturation in the population of seven regions in the Czech Republic.

In seven regions of the Czech Republic the magnesiuria and calciuria were determined photometrically using the apparatus Merck Vitalab Eclipse, the selenuria fluorimetrically and the ioduria photometrically after alkaline mineralization in the morning sample of urine (after night fasting) in subjects aged 6-65 years (3,587 probands) selected at random. The lowest magnesiuria was found in children in Klatovy district (5.36 nmol/l +/- 0.11) and the highest magnesiuria was estimated in children from the Ustí nad Labem district (6.59 mmol/l +/- 0.16). In adults the lowest magnesiuria was in Vsetín region (3.78 mmol/l +/- 0.08). Selenuria was lowest in Jindrichüv Hradec (7.60 micrograms/l +/- 0.30) and highest in the Vsetín district (15.07 micrograms/l +/- 0.50). Adults had the lowest selenuria in the region Jindrichüv Hradec (7.67 micrograms/l +/- 0.30) and the highest in Ustí nad Orlicí (11.68 micrograms/l +/- 0.34). The lowest ioduria was estimated in children from Ustí nad Labem (94.30 micrograms/l +/- 2.06) and the highest in the Vsetín region (151.60 micrograms/l +/- 7.55). Adults from the district Jindrichüv Hradec had ioduria merely (77.7 micrograms/l +/- 2.18) and the highest ioduria was found in probands from the Znojmo region (123.30 micrograms/l +/- 4.47). As far as the dependence on age is concerned, the magnesiuria significantly decreases both in children and in adults with the increasing age. Selenuria decreases in adults significantly with growing age. Sex-related differences were estimated in children aged 6 years where girls had significantly lower selenuria than boys and girls aged 13 years had lower ioduria, magnesiuria and selenuria than boys. Women aged 18-35 years had significantly lower ioduria, calciuria and magnesiuria in comparison with men of the same age. Women have a significantly lower ioduria in comparison with men at the age 56-65 years.

Epitestosterone in human blood and prostatic tissue.

Epitestosterone, a C19-steroid with anti-androgenic activity, was determined in the plasma of 234 boys and men from the ages of 6-86 years, and in the prostate tissue of 15 men 55-82 years of age. It was documented that, while in adulthood the concentration of epitestosterone is about ten times lower than the concentration of testosterone, in the pre-pubertal period the level of epitestosterone is similar or even higher than that of testosterone. In the hyperplastic prostate tissue the content of epitestosterone is comparable to that of androstenedione, it is about twice as high as the content of testosterone and approximately half that of the content of dihydrotestosterone. At least in the case of pre-pubertal boys and in the prostatic tissue it is therefore possible to include epitestosterone into consideration as a regulatory factor for the androgen-dependent events.

Positive thyroid cancer scintigraphy using technetium-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility of detecting thyroid cancer recurrences without the need for withdrawal of thyroid suppressive treatment. Upper-body or whole-body scintigraphy was performed in a group of 200 patients evaluated for differentiated thyroid cancers in 1993 and 1994 using technetium-99m sestamibi. Scans were performed 20-30min following i.v. administration of 500MBq of 99mTc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI). Bone and lung metastases were detected with very high sensitivity and specificity, with a very high predictive value of negative results and a somewhat lower predictive value of positive results. The sensitivity and specificity of findings in the neck were lower but the predictive value of negative results was high. Whole-body scans with 99mTc-MIBI are a useful tool in the follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, for the detection of distant metastatic lesions.

[Plasma and tissue levels of cytokines and adhesive molecules in patients before strumectomy].

From a group of 134 patients with complete documentation before goitrectomy the authors selected 10 histologically defined cases of (A) simple colloid nodular goitre, (B) toxic parenchymatous goitre type GB and (C) autoimmune thyroiditis. Marked hormonal suppression was achieved in group B by thyrostatic therapy, as compared with A and C, the autoantibody titres (TGAb and TMAb) differentiated the groups. The authors examined the interleukin 6 concentrations and those of its soluble receptor (IL-6, IL-6R), of the tumour necrotizing factor alpha (TNF-alpha) interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and of adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Plasma values were, except for not very significant differences, similar in all groups and ruled out a marked effect on tissue levels. The most remarkable finding in the homogenate of a peroperative excision were low IL-6, IL-6R and adhesion molecule values in group A, as compared with B and C and the absence of differences in TNF-alpha values between groups and in particular markedly higher IFN-gamma values in group B which supports theories on the etiopathogenetic role of this cytokine in GB disease. The pilot study is part of the preparation of in situ hybridization of mRNA for diagnostically usable cytokines.

[The effect of insufficient iodine intake on the size and function of the thyroid gland].

BACKGROUND: The supply of iodine indisputably affects the function of the thyroid gland. It is not clear, however, as to what extent a moderate iodopenia affects common thyroid parameters. OBJECTIVES, STARTING POINT AND MAIN PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of iodopenia (ioduria below 50 micrograms of iodine per litre of urine) on the values of T4, T3, TSH, the ankle-jerk time and sonographically ascertained thyroid gland volume in randomly selected sample of Czech population from 4 regions. METHODS: Ioduria was assessed by means of Sandel-Kolthoff method, total thyroxine, triiodothyronine and thyreotropic hormone by immunoluminiscence method; the volume of the thyroid gland sonographically according to Gutekunst and the ankle-jerk reflex by electromagnetic record method. RESULTS: Iodopenia affects a majority of investigated parameters in dependence on age. T4 is significantly higher in iodopenic adults, T3 is significantly higher in iodopenic children, TSH is significantly higher in iodopenic adults and the ankle-jerk time is prolonged in iodopenic adults. The statistical significance of the effect of iodopenia on the volume of thyroid gland was not proved. CONCLUSION: Iodopenia of a mediate degree affects commonly used parameters of the thyroid gland function in dependence on age and other factors which are to be more precisely analyzed using a larger sample. The statistical significance of the effect of iodopenia on the volume of thyroid gland was not proved. (Tab. 1, Fig. 5, Ref. 13.).
