Brain death: confirmation by radionuclide cerebral angiography.

Dynamic radionuclide cerebral angiography was performed in 14 patients with suspected brain death. In 10 of 14 patients, no intracranial arterial perfusion was demonstrable, thus confirming brain death. In four patients, faint venous activity was seen in the sagittal sinus only. All these patients also eventually died. Radionuclide cerebral angiography provides a simple and noninvasive means to confirm brain death in critically ill patients maintained on life support systems particularly when an electroencephalogram and four vessel contrast angiography may be either impractical or equivocal.

The Charles Henderson Child Health Program: an overview and five-year summary of progress.

Charles Henderson was an extremely successful businessman, at one time governor of the State of Alabama, and a distinguished philanthropist who died in 1937 leaving in trust a considerable amount of money, the income from which ultimately reverted to the construction and operation of the Charles Henderson Child Health Center in Troy, Alabama. Through the management of this trust, a 25,000 square foot regional child health center facility was constructed and has been in operation for approximately seven years. Health services to children have increased enormously, and we describe the program in some detail.

Aphasia in subdural hematoma.

The occurrence of aphasia as the only or dominant symptom of subdural hematoma (SDH) has not been emphasized in the literature. The possible confusion of traumatic aphasia with transient ischemic attacks or stroke has been the object of most recent investigations. Four patients with subacute SDH had aphasia as an initial symptom; the relevant pathophysiologic characteristics were noted in each. These patients had a rapid response to decompression with marked resolution of the aphasia irrespective of immediate or delayed drainage.

The Charles Henderson Child Health Center.

Would it be possible to develop an outstanding child health center in a rural area such as Troy, Alabama--one that, in quality and usefulness, would be second to none? Governor Charles Henderson extended the challenge through a trust that supported the establishment of such a center within six miles of Troy. The challenge was accepted, and this article tells how it was accomplished.
