Microbial risk and removal--a utility perspective.

In this paper the results of a sampling programme, undertaken as part of the EU MicroRisk project, are described. This project was undertaken to ascertain the occurrence of pathogens and indicators in the River Thames and their subsequent removal through a treatment works. Appropriate physico-chemical surrogates, as determined by statistical correlation are proposed for the microorganisms identified in the raw water. This study shows that under normal raw water conditions the treatment works is able to remove microbial contamination with a significant margin of safety.

University catalogues and HMO co-payments: simple lessons in economic rationing.

The rise of health maintenance organizations and its preferred provider kindred has encouraged an increased use of so-called reduced fee services. HMOs have historically marketed themselves as a cost-efficient, more holistic approach to providing for health care needs than do fee-based plans (insurance). But the typical pricing structure appears to have caused unanticipated and undesirable usage patterns to appear. Similar problems are shown to exist in non-medical environments.

Plasma levels of norepinephrine.

Plasma norepinephrine derives from sympathetic nerves, but the proportion reaching the circulation before being metabolized varies with the type of nerve ending-effector junctions in the tissue. Plasma levels of norepinephrine also will fluctuate because of rapid metabolism rates and environmental, emotional, and endogenous stimuli provoking a sympathetic response. The responses of plasma catecholamines in spontaneously hypertensive rats and in normotensive rats of the same strain were compared after exposure to a variety of stressors. Drugs that inhibit monoamine oxidase, catechol-O-methyl transferase, or neuronal uptake were administered to show the effects of metabolic enzymes and neuronal uptake on the amounts of catecholamines reaching the circulation. Sympathetic nervous activity and the ability of the sympathetic nervous system to respond to a uniform stimulus are studied in hypertensive and normotensive subjects. A survey of the plasma levels of norepinephrine in a variety of neurologic disorders is given.
