A clinical study of the safety and efficacy of a novel electric interdental cleaning device.

The safety and efficacy of an electric interdental cleaning device, the Braun Oral-B Interclean (ID2) (Braun AG, Kronberg, Germany), and an American Dental Association-approved manual floss were compared over a four-week period for their effect on interproximal plaque, gingivitis and papillary bleeding with 52 healthy volunteers. Eligible subjects had a complete dental examination before being randomly assigned to one of the two experimental groups. Subjects underwent a dental prophylaxis before receiving instructions in the use of their assigned device. The three parameters of plaque, gingivitis and papillary bleeding were evaluated at Days 1 and 30. The results showed a significant reduction from baseline in all three parameters for both treatment groups (p < 0.001) over the four-week period. There was a trend toward somewhat less interproximal plaque regrowth for subjects using manual floss over four weeks compared with those using the ID2, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant. The reduction in gingivitis was comparable between the groups. Similar reductions in papillary bleeding were demonstrated in the two groups. No significant soft tissue pathology was noted in either group. The results demonstrated no statistically significant difference between manual floss and the novel electric interdental cleaning device (ID2). After the 30-day clinical assessment, subjects entered the personal preference phase of the study. Each group crossed over to the other interdental cleaner, was instructed in its use, and directed to use it for an additional 30 days. At the end of this time, all subjects completed a questionnaire. Results from this part of the study revealed that significantly more subjects preferred the ID2 (69.5%) to floss (24.5%). Only 6% expressed no preference.

Four clinical studies comparing the efficacy of flat-trim and multi-level trim commercial toothbrushes.

Four independent clinical studies were conducted to compare the short- and long-term effectiveness of three commercially available toothbrushes. Two of the four studies compared plaque removal in a single-use, crossover design, and two studies compared plaque and gingivitis reduction efficacy for a long-term, three-month use. The Turesky modification of the Quigley-Hein Plaque Index and the modified Gingival Index were used to assess plaque and gingivitis levels, respectively. The two long-term studies directly compared the Oral-B P-35 and Crest Complete toothbrushes, while the two single-use studies compared the Oral-B P-35, Crest Complete and Colgate Precision toothbrushes. In all four studies, there were no significant differences found between any of the toothbrushes.

Sexual harassment: how should management handle it?

Sexual harassment is against the law and can place health care facilities at substantial risk in lawsuits as well as disrupt their caring and professional atmosphere. In some cases, health care facilities are held responsible for nonemployees' harassment of employees, as well as for harassment by employees. In addition, if an employee receives benefits such as a promotion in exchange for sexual favors, the organization may be liable for discrimination against persons who did not receive such benefits. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has established guidelines for identifying and redressing instances of sexual harassment. They instruct health care facilities to issue a policy statement explaining to employees the institution's opposition to sexual harassment and outlining procedures for lodging a complaint. It is strongly recommended that health care facilities: Investigate complaints thoroughly, tactfully, and evenhandedly. Establish a progressive discipline schedule and administer it consistently to all employees. Document the investigatory and decision making process.

Severe classroom behavior problems: teachers or counsellors.

This experiment was designed to determine the relative effectiveness of teacher and counselling approaches in the reduction of disruptive or inappropriate classroom behavior. Inappropriate classroom behavior frequencies of 12 academically low achieving, seventh-grade, black male students, with a reported high rate of inappropriate classroom behavior, were recorded. Three groups, with nearly equal mean inappropriate behaviors, were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: behavioral counselling, client-centered counselling, or no counselling. Each counselling group received fifteen 30-minute counselling sessions, at a rate of two to three times a week. In addition to counselling, all students subsequently received teacher approval within the classroom. Results indicated that the teacher was able to reduce inappropriate behavior more than any counselling group. There were also indications that behavioral counselling, but not client-centered counselling, was moderately helpful in reducing inappropriate classroom behavior.
