We report a case of profound hypotension, after induction of general anaesthesia, that resulted from unexpected cardiac tamponade. The differential diagnosis was complicated by the absence of any evidence to indicate that there was significant direct chest injury. Many of the recognised clinical signs of cardiac tamponade were absent, in particular, there was no compensatory tachycardia, and heart rate remained stable despite severe hypotension before surgical drainage of the pericardium. The possible aetiology and pathophysiology is discussed. It is suggested that after major trauma, cardiac tamponade should be considered as a possibility even in the absence of significantly abnormal cardiovascular signs, evidence of direct chest injury, or an abnormal chest X ray.
A study was undertaken to investigate the changes in pressure inside the epidural space in parturients in the first stage of labour. The purpose was to see whether acute local pressure changes in the epidural space were consistent with the hypothesis that there is physical movement of cerebrospinal fluid with certain changes in maternal posture. Pressure changes were measured via the epidural catheter through which continuous infusion epidural analgesia was administered, using a pressure transducer kept at the level of the lumbar spine. The mothers moved through a series of postures that reflected those expected during the course of labour and delivery. The pressure within the catheter was recorded during these manoeuvres. The pressure changes which were found, taken in conjunction with the associated investigations of others, are consistent with the hypothesis.

The Antoine equation is a semi-empirical equation which expresses vapour pressure as a function of temperature. A new, rapid and highly accurate method for obtaining its three constants from experimental data is presented and applied to ethanol, water and 14 anaesthetic substances. Alternative vapour pressure equations are discussed and references for original temperature--vapour pressure data are summarized. A series of equations utilizing vapour pressure is detailed: these formulas are of use in both the practice and teaching of anaesthesia.
Using New York City's 1975 financial crisis as an example, this article argues that the classic inelastic theory of wage demand for public sector employment (higher wages do not lead to reductions in employment) has been supplanted in the mid-1970s by a kinked demand relationship (the idea that higher wages can and do lead to reductions in employment), wherein unions can improve wages for their respective memberships only by implementing strategies that lend themselves to facilitating an increase in overall demand for government services.
