The premed stereotype.

For this study of attitudes surrounding premedical education, the authors examined the consequences of competitive pressure for admission to medical school. Responses of premedical and other students were compared on a number of topics including: self-descriptions, premedical stereotypes, occupational values, attitudes toward various occupations, and perceptions of college pressures. Differences are reported for premedical subgroups, including science and nonscience majors, men and women, and minority group members and others.

Genetic mapping and dominance of the amber suppressor, Su1 (supD), in Escherichia coli K-12.

In this report Su1 (supD), which is known to suppress "amber" mutations by means of a specific transfer ribonucleic acid, has been mapped relative to his and uvrC and has been found to be located at about 37.5 min on the Taylor and Trotter genetic map of the Escherichia coli K-12 chromosome. In addition, Su1(+) has been shown to be dominant over Su1(-), which supports the idea that Su1 is the structural gene for the suppressing transfer ribonucleic acid.

Coding properties of 7-methylguanine.

The abnormal base, 7-methylguanine, has been introduced into copolymers of uridylic and guanylic acids by methylation under controlled conditions. The resulting methylated copolymers have a markedly decreased template activity for polypeptide synthesis in vitro due to steric effects of the 7-methyl groups. Contrary to expectation, these polymers do not permit incorporation of amino acids whose codons contain the bases uracil and adenine.
