The effects of oral treatment with atenolol and propranolol on blood pressure, heart rate and plasma cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP) were studied in a group of young borderline hypertensives. Observations were accomplished after a period of recumbent relaxation and also following physiological stress testing. The latter significantly increased blood pressure, heart rate and plasma cAMP. A direct relationship was found between heart rate and plasma cAMP at rest and also following psychological stress. This relationship was lost following drug treatments. Both beta-blockers significantly reduced all measured variables in both conditions. However, plasma cAMP was most affected by propranolol.

Collagen and elastic fibres were stained in cryostatic slices of various tissues with the MBTH reaction, specific for aldehyde groups. Depending on the source, collagen and elastin gave different colours, easy to distinguish. It appears that this simple technique could be useful not only to visualize cross-linking in vivo of these fibres but also to explore their pathological alterations.

Electron-microscopic observation of bovine fetal rumen reveals that the distribution and structure of glycogen are modified during fetal development. Both basal and superficial cells increase their glycogen content in fetuses up to 6 months of age. In older fetuses, the epithelial glycogen content diminishes. These morphological changes resemble the perinatal metabolic changes occurring in other organs.
In Chile between 1969 and 1974 the birth rate declined by 10 per cent and the infant mortality rate by 18.6 per cent. In 1974 there were proportionately fewer births at high birth order than in 1969. Such births carry significantly higher risk to the infant in both the neonatal and postneonatal period of life. Comparison of data from urban areas of high and low socioeconomic status yield similar findings.

Changes in numbers of epithelial and connective tissue cells, thickness of connective tissue, and height and diameter of papillae were quantitated in fetal and postnatal bovine ruminal mucosa. During fetal development, the height of papillae and number of fibroblasts increased, the diameter of papillary base and thickness of subpapillary and interpapillary connective tissue remained constant, and the numbers of basal and superficial cells of the epithelium decreased. During the first 2 months of postnatal development, the height of papillae and numbers of fibroblasts enclosed in the papillary core decreased, and the diameter of the papillary base and the interpapillary distance increased. In consequence, the increase in connective tissue, rather than its redistribution, was involved in papillary development. The epithelial reorganization appeared to follow the changes occurring in the connective tissue, at least during fetal development.
During the last ten year period, 78 newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia were seen at the Clinica Infantil "La Paz", Madrid. Twenty seven cases died immediately after delivery and 51 were operated. Necropsy findings showed pulmonary hypoplasia and patent ductus arteriosus. Mortality rate in operated cases was 29%. It seems that pulmonary hypoplasia increases pulmonary vascular resistance resulting in a state of fetal circulation with right-to-left shunting through ductus arteriosus. In these cases right to left shunt with umbilical and temporal artery catheters measuring pre and postductal pO2 must be demonstrated. Authors show their experience with two cases of newborns with Bockdalek hernia treated with tolazoline in postoperative period. Both survived.

Desmosomes entirely similar to those of the deeper layers of ruminal epithelium are seen in the luminal layers of the early fetal ruminal epithelium. In the older fetuses, these desmosomes have morphological features that reveal to some extent the occurrence of processes of keratinization. This could indicate that the basis for cell keratinization is already present in the fetus and that postnatal keratinization corresponds mainly to the full development of the prenatally existing pattern of differentiation.
