[Diagnostic and prognostic importance of laboratory tests in malaria in airports. Study of six recent cases].

During the summer 1994, six cases of airport malaria occurred in France, near the Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport. Due to Plasmodium falciparum, all cases underwent rapid and severe deterioration, and in one case, the patient died. The role of laboratory tests is essential to establish the diagnosis of persons who have never resided in the endemic malaria areas and follow up with the patients already under treatment to detect possible complications.

[Effect of antibiotics at subinhibitory concentrations on alpha-hemolysin production in uropathogenic Escherichia coli].

The action of subinhibitory concentrations of seven antibiotics (Mezlocillin, Streptomycin, Tobramycin, Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline, Nalidixic acid and Pefloxacin) on the ability to produce alpha-hemolysin are studied on six strains of uropathogenic E. coli. At CMI 2 most of the antibiotics have an inhibitory action. At lower concentrations Pefloxacin, Tetracycline, Streptomycin (in the decrease order) have still an action. Some variations in determinations are observed in function of the choice of the antibiotics and also in function of the stains of E. coli studied.

[Effects of subinhibitory concentrations of pefloxacine on hemolysin production and adherence of urinary Escherichia coli].

The in vitro effect of subinhibitory concentrations of pefloxacin on E. coli's production of hemolysin and adherence to eucaryotic cells was studied. Six uropathogenic E. coli strains, with mannose-resistant and/or mannose-sensitive adhesins were tested. All strains produced an alpha-hemolysin and were susceptible to pefloxacin (0.125 less than or equal to MIC less than or equal to 0.250 mg/l). The effect on hemolysin production was studied using microtitration plates to determine the concentration inhibiting 50% of E. coli's hemolytic activity. The inhibition of adhesion was tested following adhesion of E. coli to uroepithelial cells. Sub-MICs of pefloxacin strongly inhibited the production of alpha-hemolysin and adhesion of E. coli regardless of adhesin type. A correlation between the inhibition of hemolysin production and the inhibition of adhesion to uroepithelial cells was found for four E. coli strains.

[Differentiation between micrococci and staphylococci by the study of the sensitivity to nitrofurantoin [N(5 nitro - 2-furfurylidene - 1-amino - hydantoin)]].

The authors have studied the sensitivity to the nitrofurantoïne of 3 328 strains of staphylococci and of 232 strains of micrococci. They have noticed that 100% staphylococci strains are sensitive and that 100% micrococci strains are resistant. They propose this sensitivity test as a simple means of differentiation between micrococci and staphylococci.

[Use of Staphylococcus aureus protein "A" to detect rotavirus in the stools (author's transl)].

The authors have used an anti-rotavirus immunserum fixed to the Staphylococcus aureus protein A to detect this virus in the stools. A study on animal faeces showed a very good agreement in results with ELISA technique. The study on human stools shows a good agreement with ELISA technique and identical results to this technique in comparison with electronical microscopy. The agglutination reaction appears as a quick, simple and specific technique to find out rotavirus in the stools.
